Five people unknowingly received organs from an HIV-positive man in Taiwan due to "human error" at the hospital. All the organ receivers have so far tested HIV-negative, a media report said Friday

On Aug 24, a team of doctors at Taiwan University Hospital removed organs from a man pronounced brain dead. His heart, liver, one lung, and both kidneys were surgically removed and transplanted to five patients after a lab official said HIV test results were "non-reactive".

Later it discovered the donor was HIV-positive, the Shanghai Daily reported.

The hospital announced Thursday that the five patients have tested HIV-negative.

All five will, however, continue to be receive HIV-preventive medicine and will remain under observation for at least six months. The hospital will bear their medical expenses.

The patient who received the lung was still under intensive care and the kidney recipient also remains hospitalised. The other three have been discharged, a hospital official said.

Health authorities released an investigation report, saying there were human errors in the case. The hospital staff were notified about the HIV test result via telephone, without any proper confirmation.

The hospital will be fined around $16,000. The head of the organ transplant team, who resigned earlier this month, will face punishment as well.

Soldier fined for helping old man

A soldier in China was fined 3,000 yuan (around $470) after he helped an elderly man who had collapsed in the street, the defence department said

The National Defence website said Thursday the soldier was fined in southern Hainan province. However, an investigation proved his innocence and he got his money back, the Shanghai Daily reported.

The ministry of health recently issued new guidelines for helping elderly people who fall down, saying the action to be taken is different in differing circumstances.

If the elderly people remain conscious, one should first ask whether they have headache or feel weak in their hands and feet. Raising them up could worsen their illness, which might be linked to cerebral haemorrhage.

The incident took place when the soldier was cycling to his camp and came across an old man lying on the ground. The man was almost unconscious. The soldier called for paramedics and went with him to hospital. The patient recovered, but his relatives said the soldier was guilty of running over the man and demanded compensation.

The soldier paid up, but when his commanders investigated they found several witnesses who all testified to his innocence. The family later apologised and returned his money.

Amateur Houdini red faced after ripping female teacher's bra through shirt!

An amateur Houdini has apologised for his weird and embarrassing magic trick that appeared to rip off a female teacher's bra through her shirt.

According to The Enterprise of Brockton, Russell Fitzgerald, a Massachusetts school committee chairman has apologised for his introduction to a televised meeting using a magic trick that left the audience in a state of shock.

Fitzgerald tied two handkerchiefs into a knot at the meeting in Abington, giving one end to a male teacher and holding the other himself.

The female teacher Ellen Killian, who was left mortified on seeing the show on local television, was asked to hold the knot tightly to her chest and as soon as both the men pulled the ends, out came a bra tied to the handkerchief.

"I was just as shocked as everybody else," the New York Daily News quoted Killian as saying.

"I just want to make it clear I had no prior knowledge how his trick was going to end," she stated.

Fitzgerald issued a written statement saying that he regretted the stunt and even apologised to both Killian and the male teacher.

"My intention was to begin a purposeful school committee business meeting in a way which was enjoyable and light-hearted," Fitzgerald said.

"I am sorry for the embarrassment this has caused Ms. Killian, my fellow school committee members and the school department.

"My desire is to get back to important school department business," he added.

Car thieves, victims meet on Spanish beach

A Belgian couple vacationing in this Spanish seaside town found themselves face to face with the man and woman who stole their car back in Belgium

Police said the stranger-than-fiction story begins a few weeks ago outside a Belgian courthouse where a man about to be questioned over alleged sexual misconduct with minors escaped police custody with help from his girlfriend, waiting near the building with a gun.

Fleeing on foot, they came across another couple sitting in their car.

The fugitive and his companion forced the couple out of the vehicle at gunpoint and took off.

But fate saw fit to bring the two couples together again some 1,500 km away in Guardamar del Segura, a city on Spain's southeastern Mediterranean coast.

While soaking up the sun Monday, the victims noticed they were sharing a patch of beach with the car thieves.

They quickly called the police and as the wife waited for the officers to arrive, her husband went off in search of the stolen car, which he found parked nearby.

Without a second thought, the car's owner slashed the tires to prevent another escape by the thieves, who were detained moments later by police.

The fugitives were transferred to Madrid to await their extradition to Belgium, police said.

US puts 5 Haqqani Network associates on terrorist list

Posted:

Squeezing recalcitrant ally Pakistan, the United States has put on its terrorist list five associates of the Haqqani Network branded as a "veritable arm" of the Pakistani Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) agency.

Announcing the sanctions Thursday on the five people allegedly linked to insurgency along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, the US Treasury Department accused them of collaborating with "the most dangerous terrorist organizations operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan."

"These financiers and facilitators provide the fuel for the Taliban, Haqqani Network and Al Qaeda to realise their violent aspirations," Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David Cohen said in a statement.

US companies and individuals can't engage in transactions with the five individuals named in the sanctions.

Among those targeted was Abdul Aziz Abbasin, whom the Treasury Department described as a "key commander" for the Haqqani Network, a militant group that operates on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

"Abbasin commands a group of Taliban fighters and has assisted in running a training camp for foreign fighters in Paktika Province, and also has been involved in ambushing supply vehicles of Afghan government forces and the transport of weapons to Afghanistan," the Treasury Department said.

Also blacklisted were Hajji Faizullah Khan Noorzai, Hajji Malik Noorzai and Abdur Rehman accused of providing financial and material support to the Taliban and Fazal Rahim, alleged financial facilitator for Al Qaeda, as well as the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.

Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said last week that the Haqqani network is a "veritable arm" of the ISI and was involved in a September truck bombing that wounded 77 NATO troops and killed five Afghans.

FBI arrests US man plotting to blow up Pentagon

Posted:

A 26-year-old Massachusetts man was busted yesterday in a bizarre plot to attack the Pentagon and US Capitol with remote-controlled model planes packed with explosives.

Rezwan Ferdaus, a US citizen, was radicalised by watching jihadist websites and planned to kill "enemies of Allah" in an elaborate plot hatched a year ago, according to the Justice Department.

Nabbed: Rezwan Ferdaus wanted to blow up the Capitol to 'smithereens'

In a conversation with a federal informant, Ferdaus allegedly explained how in ancient times, God uses natural disasters to punish evil civilisations, and he would use them today. "For us, we've gotta do that," he said, according to the affidavit. "Allah has given us the privilege... he punishes them by our hand. We're the ones."

But the collaborators he thought were al-Qaeda recruiters turned out to be undercover FBI agents and they arrested him yesterday after he took possession of his arsenal -- including grenades, six AK-47 assault rifles and what he believed were 25 pounds of C-4 explosives.

Ferdaus, a graduate of Northeastern University with a degree in physics, began talking last December with an ex-con about attacking the Pentagon with small "drone airplanes" to "decapitate" the military. The ex-con, who was working with undercover agents recorded numerous talks in which Ferdaus elaborated on his plan, which also involved blowing the dome of the Capitol "to smithereens." He planned to launch the model planes from near the Jefferson Memorial, and at one time set July 5, during the Independence Day weekend, as the date.

Ferdaus also bought cellphones, removed the back covers and soldered wires to each phone in order to turn them into an electrical switch for improvised explosive devices to be used in Iraq.

'Berlusconi's sexual prowess hypnotised me'

German born actress Sabina Began accused of recruiting prostitutes for Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi reveals how she found him sexually hypnotic

An actress accused of hiring prostitutes for Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has claimed his sexual prowess "hypnotised" her.

Sabina Began (38), described how Berlusconi charmed her at his luxury villa in 2005.

Smitten by Berlusconi: Sabina Began claims that Italian PM Berlusconi
made her feel like a real woman and she spent the night with him after
falling in love with him

She said, "He was whispering in my ear, hypnotising me. After two hours I was hot and ready. He made me feel like a woman."

Nicknamed by the Italian press the 'Queen Bee' of Berlusconi's inner circle, she disclosed for the first time how she met the prime minister, who turns 75 today.

She told the Italian edition of Vanity Fair that she fell for Berlusconi and went to bed with him after being introduced to him in Sept 2005 at his villa on Sardinia''s Costa Smeralda, to which she was flown from Rome in a private jet.

He first expressed an interest in her when they went for a walk around a small lake in the grounds of the multi-million pound villa complex.

In love
"He was whispering in my ear, it was as if I was hypnotised," she said. "After a couple of hours I was smitten. I looked at the prime minister and said 'I want to spend the night with you. He was romantic, it was a marvellous night. I was in love. He's the only man who's made me feel like a woman."

Began, who was born in Germany but forged a career in Italy as a topless model, is under investigation for allegedly helping to recruit around 30 showgirls and escorts for the prime minister's so-called bunga bunga sex parties.

Began denies the allegations.

Since her liaison with the media mogul she has taken on the role of organising his parties, one of which was attended by George Clooney, the Hollywood actor and director.

Began's account comes as prosecutors consider whether to bring charges against Berlusconi on suspicion of inducing a businessman, Gianpaolo Tarantini to lie on his behalf about the alleged prostitution ring.

Tarantini is accused of being the ringleader of the ring and is also under investigation for allegedly extorting from the billionaire premier.

"Thank God, the lashing of Sheima is cancelled. Thanks to our beloved King. I'm sure all Saudi women will be so happy, I know I am," said Princess Amira al-Taweel, wife of billionaire Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.

Meet the man who gets paid to sleep on the job!

For most of us sleeping at office is the stuff dreams are made of, but a Chinese man, who only sleeps during his working hours, still gets paid for it.

Lee Jia, 27, earns 10,000 renminbi every month just to test the comfort levels at hotel rooms.

His other activities include checking out the scent of the rooms, the cleanliness, the brand of toiletries and the type of TV programmes available.

However, according to a Chinese daily, Jia finds just sleeping in hotel rooms a bit more stressful at times than one might have thought.

Lee, who loves travelling, said that he is paid to observe his surroundings and then write a review of the hotel and its facilities on his blog.

"You need to be highly focused and articulate to observe every detail in order to produce a comprehensive report," Star Online quoted him as saying.

Delhi worst city for parking car, finds survey

Posted:

New Delhi is the world's worst city for parking a car, a new survey has suggested.

The IBM Global Parking Index, released September 28, ranked 20 cities on six continents by the 'pain' level of the parking experience, concluding that New Delhi, followed by fellow Indian city Bangalore, topped the list.

Chinese metropolis Beijing was in third place, while Shenzhen was in fifth, with Russian capital Moscow holding fourth place in between.

IBM surveyed over 8,000 commuters for the study, which revealed that wherever you are in the world, frustration with parking a vehicle manifests itself in the same ways -- over half of all respondents said that at some point, they had simply given up looking for a spot in their city.

Globally, we spend nearly 20 minutes trying to find the coveted spot, said the firm, although that figure varies widely, with some citizens in Chicago, Montreal and Stockholm reporting that finding a space was a five-minute job or less.

With such demand, it's unsurprising that parking raises considerable passion -- one in four of the respondents to the survey said that they have been involved in an argument with a fellow motorist over the past year.

Drivers in New Delhi (58 percent), Bangalore (44 percent), Nairobi (43 percent) and Milan (37 percent) were the most vocal with each other over a specific parking spot, said IBM.

Parking in global cities (with 'Pain Index' score)

1. New Delhi: 140
2. Bangalore: 138
3. Beijing: 124
4. Moscow: 122
5. Shenzhen: 122
6. Paris: 122
7. Milan: 117
8. Nairobi: 111

13. Johannesburg: 87
14. London: 86
15. New York City: 85

China's most 'high profile' prostitute turns out to be a man

Posted:

A self-proclaimed "high profile" prostitute, whose lewd accounts on a microblogging site in China in the form of a "prostitute diary" were very popular on the net, has turned out to be a man.

The revelation prompted Sina.com, the company that hosts the popular Weibo microblogging service, to permanently delete the account of the man posing for online fame.

=The company also suspended the accounts of six other users for two weeks for spreading rumours regarding the supposed prostitute.

Using the pseudonym "Ruoxiaoan1," the 31-year-old man surnamed Lin posted 401 entries on his Weibo account starting from January, fabricating stories about working as a woman prostitute in Hangzhou, the capital city of east China's Zhejiang Province, state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

On his microblog, Lin depicted himself as a 22-year-old woman who "accidentally" lost her virginity and became a sex worker. Police said Lin took cues from foreign literature while writing his "prostitute diary" in order to attract attention from netizens.

Lin is actually employed as an editor in the real world. Prostitution is illegal in China and Lin was fined 500 yuan (USD 78.5) in accordance with China's Internet regulations for disturbing public order.

Lin apologised for his actions, police said. His microblog account was followed by more than 250,000 users, including several prominent Chinese Internet celebrities.

Some of his entries were reposted as many as 10,000 times.
