Two women were fatally shot at a beauty parlour in the Guatemalan capital, a police official said

Jaime Otzin, head of the national police, said the women were killed by a pair of armed robbers.

The assailants, identified as Henry Barreda and Manuel Aguilar, were apprehended by police while attempting to flee.

The salon's receptionist, Rosmery Mendez, and an unnamed customer died in the incident, Otzin said.

More than 340 women have been murdered so far this year in Guatemala, a country of around 14 million people, while 608 of the 5,548 people slain in the Central American country in 2010 were female.

Deaf-mute jailed for sex attacks in China

A Chinese deaf and mute man has been jailed for attempting to rape young women who tried to help him as he pretended being a Japanese student who had lost his way on college campus.

Xie Lin, an unemployed 19-year-old, was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted rape, Shanghai Daily reported.

The Huangpu district people's court awarded him the sentence Tuesday.

Xie, a Sichuan province native, came to Shanghai in February. He wandered around Donghua University campus at night. On spotting a target, he would use the excuse of asking for directions to lure them into quiet areas.

On May 12, Xie spotted his first victim and showed her a paper stating he was a Japanese student who was searching for a print shop. As the woman led him to the shop, Xie started kissing and touching her.

He dragged her onto a lawn and tried to rape her. But the woman fought back and escaped, the court said.

Nine days later, Xie returned to the university on Yan'an Road and tried repeating the same thing. But this time the woman bit his shoulder and escaped. However, he was nabbed by students who rushed to the scene.

Lawyer, shown on TV in sex scandal, wants apology

A Beijing lawyer has sought an apology from a television station for erroneously showing his picture and describing him as the man who allegedly kept six women as sex slaves

Shangdong Television used the picture of Wang Jin, of Beijing City Linkzone Law Firm, in a news programme about the sex slave scandal last Friday, claiming it was that of suspect Li Hao, Shanghai Daily reported.

The video was later posted online. It appeared in the first report on the scandal on search engine Baidu.com.

Wang said: "I received numerous calls from friends and relatives asking me whether I had any relationship with the case and the suspect."

The lawyer has asked the station to apologise on the same programme and admit its mistake, since his life and work have been seriously affected due to it.

An official at the station said the case was being investigated and it would respond soon.

Li Hao, a former official of the Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision in Luoyang, Henan province, allegedly kept six women as sex slaves for two years in a dungeon, killing two of them. He is accused of forcing them into prostitution and featuring them in pornographic videos put on the Internet for profit.

Burglars use Facebook, Twitter to target victims

A majority of burglars in Britain use social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter to target their victims, a survey has revealed

As many users post updates on social networking sites, thieves not only get information about recent high-value purchases, but also the dates and times when they are out.

Other websites, such as Google Street View, show photographs of individual houses from which the would-be burglars can gauge security and ease of access by looking for alarms and side entrances, the Telegraph reports.

The study was based on the answers of offenders who were convicted of burglary this year.

Four out of five of the criminals said burglars were using social media websites. But they also said that a simple home alarm would have deterred them from targeting the property in the first place.

One of the convicted burglars interviewed said that 'people are now taking advantage of social media to access information about would-be victims.'

"We're living in the age of the digital criminal and people are taking advantage of social media to access information about would-be victims," Taylor said.

"We'll tell them even when we're going away on holidays. We will let them know that we're not in. We're inviting them round to our house," he added.

The survey also revealed that a thief steals an average of 487 pounds from a home on a single visit.

3-year-old girl addicted to eating rocks, bricks, lightbulbs and sticks

A young girl who is suffering from a rare medical condition is so addicted to eating harmful objects that she ate an entire lightbulb

Natalie Hayhurst, 3, who suffers from Pica, a disorder characterised by an appetite for non-nutritive substances has eaten rocks, sticks, bricks, house plants and an entire light bulb.

While her favourite delicacies are rocks and sticks, the girl has been known to wolf down almost a whole brick, "like it was a chocolate chip cookie."

Her mother Colleen, 31, says every day is a constant battle of wills as she tries to stop her daughter eating something that could kill her.

"I have had to call this poison helpline so many times that it''s on my speed dial. You name it Natty''s tried to eat it," the Daily Mail quoted her mom as saying.

Colleen, of Terre Haute, Indiana, revealed the moment her daughter''s disease nearly killed her after eating an entire lightbulb that she tore from a bedroom night-light in February.

Since the accident, Natalie is watched around the clock by Colleen, father David and brother Andrew, 5.

"My big worry is that one day she''ll eat something poisonous and we won''t be there in time," said Colleen, an office manager.

Fan dies after being pushed off stand at 'violence ridden' football match

A 23-year-old football fan died after being pushed over the side of a stand in a violence fuelled derby match in Peru

Walter Oyarce fell to his death over the edge during Saturday's game between Universitario and visiting Alianza Lima at Estadio Monumental, one of the world''s most dangerous stadiums.

Fans had clashed early on with riot police in the stands before the opening kick off. But the violence turned deadly when the home side took a 2-1 lead late in the second half of the match.

According to the Daily Mail, assailants with suspected ties to Universitario's ''La Trinchera Norte'' ultras group jumped over Oyarce and other Alianza fans in their private box.

They started beating Oyarce and other Alianza fans using fists, belts and anything else they could get their hands on to pummel their victims, until Oyarce was pushed over the railing and fell more than 30ft onto the concrete pavement.

He was found lying in a pool of blood and clinging to life, but died on the way to a local hospital.

David Sanchez Manrique, fingered as the man who pushed Oyarce to his death, fled the country on the night of the murder on a Lima to Miami flight, the report said.

Six suspects have been identified by witnesses and video surveillance from the scene.

One of them, Gian Carlo Diaz, turned himself into police and was released after questioning.

Woman sentenced to 10 lashes for breaking car driving ban

Posted:

A Saudi woman has been sentenced to ten lashes for defying the nation's ban on women driving.

Shaima Ghassaniya was found guilty of driving without the government's permission, the Daily Mail reports.

The ruling comes just two days after Saudi King Abdullah's announcement that women will have the right to vote and run in the country's 2015 local elections.

According to the paper many other women have been detained for several days for violating the driving ban, but had not been sentenced by a court.

In May, as pro-democracy protests swept the region, some women in Saudi Arabia called for the right to drive.

A campaign dubbed Women2Drive issued calls on social media such as Twitter and Facebook to challenge the ban.

China metro crash injures more than 260

Posted:

Two metro trains collided in Shanghai yesterday, injuring more than 260 people, the city government said, just months after a deadly high-speed rail crash that shocked China.

The Shanghai Metro Company blamed the accident on a signal failure -- the same cause as a July high-speed train crash that killed at least 40 people and shook public confidence in China's vast rail network, prompting outrage.

There were no immediate reports of any deaths from yesterday's accident, but pictures posted on Chinese websites showed bloodied passengers, some lying on the floor apparently unconscious and others with head injuries.

The metro company said 500 passengers had been evacuated from the trains and the injured taken to hospital.

Around 50 went to the nearby Ruijin hospital, where a doctor said most of the victims were only slightly hurt.

"This accident shouldn't have happened," said Wen Pei, a passenger in the hospital's emergency room, his arm in a sling from a shoulder injury.

"The speed seemed fast. I felt a sudden stop, which made me lose my balance. I hit my head on the pole and it bled," said another victim, without giving his name.

The Shanghai government said it was investigating the accident, which appeared to have been caused by equipment failure.

"So far, more than 260 people have been sent to hospital, but no one is dead," said a government spokeswoman. "We have set up a team to investigate."

'Obama is the antichrist'

A heckler makes a bizarre rant disrupting American President Barack Obama's speech during a campaign fundraiser in Los Angeles

A bizarre heckler labelled US President Obama 'the antichrist' before he was dragged out of a California fundraiser by Secret Service agents.

The man had positioned himself at the front of the stage at the House of Blues in Los Angeles last night and began shouting loudly as soon as Obama started talking.

Causing a nuisance: Serrano (in white shirt) shouted Biblical messages
and then said Barack Obama was the Antichrist before he was removed
by Secret Service agents. (Below) President Obama stopped his speech
midway and resumed only after Serrano was escorted out of the area.

Identified by the Secret Service as David Serrano, the heckler began shouting 'Jesus Christ is God and a Christian God' as the audience booed him. The President stopped talking, but the man was drowned out by the 800-strong crowd as they chanted 'Four more years! Four more years!'

As he was taken out by agents he then yelled, "Jesus Christ is God! Barack Obama is the Antichrist!"
Serrano was later released without charge.

Obama then continued with his speech, but was later interrupted by another heckler, who shouted, "Don't forget medical marijuana!" He responded, "Thank you for that."

Tony Bell, a spokesman for Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, said Serrano had been a regular at county meetings and often gave long, rambling religious statements.

He said, "He yells out his statements, which are very mistaken, odd interpretations of scriptures. He's been pretty close to being thrown out of our meetings. I don't have the impression he's dangerous, but he has issues that could use some help."

Pakistanis held in Britain for plotting another 9/11

Posted:

A six-member gang of suspected Pakistani-origin suicide bombers have been arrested for plotting a terror attack in Britain similar to 9/11, police said.

However, no specific targets were identified when the men were produced at the West London Magistrates' Court Monday, The Sun reported.

Irfan Khalid, 26, Irfan Nasser, 30, and Ashik Ali, 26, are accused of plotting to be suicide bombers and recruiting others for terrorist training.

Nasser and Khalid are also charged with travelling to Pakistan for terrorism training.

Rahin Ahmed, 25, is accused of helping others get training and for collecting money to fund terrorist acts.

Ashik Ali's brother Bahader, 28, is charged with allowing money or property to be available for terrorism.

The men are all from Birmingham. They have been remanded to custody to appear in court again next month.

Tapes revealed the group had practised making bombs and poisons at a training camp in Pakistan, the court heard.

One suspect was allegedly recorded as saying: "This is revenge for everything they're doing. It is another 9/11."

The gang planned to drive around Britain to make suicide strikes on various targets, the court heard.

The plot was reportedly drawn in revenge for cartoons of Prophet Mohammed that appeared in a Danish newspaper.

Police said the men aimed to fund their operation with money raised for a Muslim charity. But the plan backfired after the gang gambled away thousands of pounds on the stock exchange.

The gang allegedly collected cash from Muslims during Ramadan, claiming to be raising funds for charity. Police found five buckets containing 1,500 pounds in raids.

The gang also made "martyr videos". One suspect allegedly recorded a warning, saying "suicide bombs on the streets, spilling so much blood you won't believe it".
