Goa: Independent MLA admits to illegal mining

For the first time, independent Goa MLA Anil Salgaoncar has confessed to exporting 1.3 million tonnes of iron ore from Goa in 2010 without paying royalty. The miner-politician, who claims it was a procedural error, operates around seven mines in Goa. Salgaoncar submitted back dated documents to claim ore was exported before stringent guidelines came into place in July 2010. This is the first time that a miner-politician has admitted to illegal export of ore.

Court rejects Amar Singh's request for bail

Politician Amar Singh may have to return to Tihar Jail soon. A court in Delhi today rejected his request for bail. Mr Singh was arrested on September 6 in the cash-for-votes scam and was taken to Tihar Jail. He was granted interim bail and allowed to go home after spending a few days at Delhi's AIIMS hospital.
