The government is trying hard to counter the note sent by Pranab Mukherjee's ministry that questions P Chidambaram's actions when India's greatest scam was unleashed in 2008 by A Raja, who was then Telecom Minister. Sources confirm that the Prime Minister called Mr Chidambaram last night. During their talks, Mr Chidambaram explained the decisions he took when he was Finance Minister and Mr Raja was in the process of distributing mobile network licenses and second-generation (2G) frequency. Dr Manmohan Singh has also reportedly been in frequent touch with Mr Mukherjee since last night.

The Planning Commission has told the Supreme Court that poverty line for urban and rural areas in India could be provisionally placed at Rs. 965 per capita per month and Rs. 781 per capita per month respectively.
