2G note is part of orchestrated campaign, said Chidambaram to PM: Sources Posted: 22 Sep 2011 08:30 AM PDT The government is trying hard to counter the note sent by Pranab Mukherjee's ministry that questions P Chidambaram's actions when India's greatest scam was unleashed in 2008 by A Raja, who was then Telecom Minister. Sources confirm that the Prime Minister called Mr Chidambaram last night. During their talks, Mr Chidambaram explained the decisions he took when he was Finance Minister and Mr Raja was in the process of distributing mobile network licenses and second-generation (2G) frequency. Dr Manmohan Singh has also reportedly been in frequent touch with Mr Mukherjee since last night.

Chidambaram called PM last night after Pranab's 2G note erupted Posted: 22 Sep 2011 07:36 AM PDT The telecom scam, which has struck at the heart of Indian politics, forcing the resignations of senior ministers and dumping others in jail, has delivered another forceful blow on Wednesday. A note on the scam sent to the Prime Minister's Office in March exposes one of the bitterest rivalries within the UPA - that of Pranab Mukherjee and P Chidambaram.

Outrage over Rs 32 benchmark for who's not poor Posted: 22 Sep 2011 06:15 AM PDT The Planning Commission has told the Supreme Court that poverty line for urban and rural areas in India could be provisionally placed at Rs. 965 per capita per month and Rs. 781 per capita per month respectively. This would mean those earning over Rs. 32 a day in urban areas and over Rs. 25 a day in rural India will no longer be getting Below Poverty Line (BPL) benefits.
Ministers' report cards: Meet the toppers Posted: 22 Sep 2011 06:10 AM PDT It's time for the ministers' report cards as performance reports of 74 government departments are ready to be presented to the Cabinet. The ministries are judged by the cabinet secretariat, the Planning Commission and the Finance Ministry and it is a tough exam - only those getting more than 90 per cent are classified in the very good or excellent category; the ministries getting less than 60 per cent are classified as having fared poorly.

32-hour-old is youngest eye donor Posted: 22 Sep 2011 04:22 AM PDT When their newborn daughter met an untimely death a mere 32 hours after birth, bereaved Kandivli couple Hetal and Dhimant Shah took a pledge -- they would take all their sorrow and turn it into the most precious gift: the gift of vision. They decided that their beloved infant would live on in the eyes of others, who would think of her every time they enjoyed the wondrous beauties of the world. With no hesitation in their minds, the couple decided to donate their infant's eyes, making her the youngest ever eye donor in the city, and perhaps in the world.

Mr Reddy made the announcement at a public meeting in Tirupati. The scheme is being seen in political circles here as an attempt to divert public attention from the ongoing strike by various sections of people in Telangana for separate state. |
