Al-Qaeda sympathiser held in New York for plotting terror attack

Posted:

A "lone wolf Al Qaeda sympathiser" who plotted to bomb police cars and postal facilities in Manhattan as also US soldiers was arrested as he was preparing to create working explosives, officials said.

Jose Pimentel, 27, described as a "lone wolf" with no ties to international groups, planned to carry out a one-man terror spree in retaliation for the US killing of Qaeda cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in September, according to Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

"He was a reader of Al Qaeda's slick online magazine Inspire - and inspire him it did," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

But Pimintel was not part of a larger terrorism plot. "There is no evidence he worked with anyone else," Bloomberg said. "He appears to be ... a lone wolf."

Pimintel's was the 14th terror attack thwarted by the New York Police since the 9/11 attacks, the mayor said, and justifies the city's counter-terrorism efforts.

His intended targets were US military personnel who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as US postal facilities and police in New York and Bayonne, New Jersey, officials said.

An unemployed native of the Dominican Republican who is a US citizen, Pimentel had been monitored by authorities since 2009 and his extreme positions "made some of his like-minded friends nervous," said Kelly.

Pimentel even talked about changing his name to Osama Hussein - in honor of two of his now deceased idols, Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, he said.

Last August, the suspect allegedly decided to carry out the bomb plot. He "jacked up his speed" after Sep 30, when Al-Awlaki was killed in a US drone strike in Yemen, Kelly said.

Israeli women strip in support of Egypt blogger

Posted:

Dozens of Israeli women stripped off their clothes in a show of solidarity with the 20-year-old Egyptian blogger who caused a stir in the Arab world when she posted a naked photo of herself in protest against the limits on free expression in her country.

Touched by the spirited protest measure, some 40 Israelis posed for a nude group shot in support of the Egyptian activist, Aliaa Magda Elmahdy, who received threats and harsh criticism for her actions. Unlike Elmahdy, however, the Israeli women did not fully display their intimate parts for the camera.

Controversial: Aliaa Elmahdy invited threats after she posed nude on
her blog

The brains behind the operation is Or Tepler, who opened a Facebook event inviting women "to show support in a non-violent and legitimate way for a woman who is just like us -- young, ambitious, full of dreams and evidently has a developed sense of humour."

"Girls, let's give the world a good reason to see the unique beauty of Israeli women," Tepler wrote. "Regardless of whether they are Jewish, Arab, straight or Lesbian -- because here, as of now, it doesn't matter. Let us show the doubters that our international discourse doesn't depend on governments."

More than 100 women attended the event. The participants were photographed holding a sign saying 'Love without Limits,' and 'Homage to Aliaa Elmahdy. Sisters in Israel.'

"I didn't expect that she would get the response that she got. It got on my nerves that she received a quarter of a million abusive comments and death threats," said Tepler.

Fairy lights, cookies: Pippa's tips for a perfect Christmas

Pippa Middleton has published a guide to the festive season.

According to Pippa, the secret of a stress-free Christmas is 'first impressions'.

The Ten Tips for a Perfect Family Christmas published on Party Times online party magazine advises readers to welcome guests with pathways lit with candles and fairylights.

Other pointers include sprucing up Christmas trees with colourful decorations, baking cookies and shopping online.

Pippa's magazine offers advice on welcoming family members.

The magazine says, "Have guests met by a beautiful red berry wreath and windows decorated with silver snowflake cut-outs, reindeers and Christmas trees using snow spray."

Advice on decorating the tree is also given as it is suggested that bright, unusual baubles are used along with candy canes and edible chocolate decorations.

Patterned tablecloths are suggested but fairylights take the centre stage.

The magazine says, "At this time of year everything seems to gleam so fill your house with lots of tiny lights such as green Christmas fairy lights."

It added, "Fairy lights play an essential part and can be draped from beams, twisted round staircases and hung around door frames for a winter sparkle."

Finishing touches are also included in the guide to make 'Christmas extra special'.

Clooney to play Jobs in biopic?

Posted:

George Clooney is reportedly in the running to play the late Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs in an upcoming film.

The biopic will chart Steve's life until his death from pancreatic cancer aged 56.

George (50), is apparently up against 40-year-old Noah Wyle for the role.

Sony is reportedly hoping that Oscar-winning Social Network screenwriter Aaron Sorkin will write the script.

The competition between George and Noah may prove tough however, as Noah has played Steve Jobs before, in the 1999 cult classic Pirates of Silicon Valley.

Noah was even invited by Steve to that year's Macworld Expo, after which he took the actor out for dinner.
George and Noah both played doctors in the classic television series ER, which picked up 23 Emmy Awards over its 1994-2009 run.

Fourteen people were taken to nearby hospitals and 21 people suffered from minor injuries. It is not known exactly what caused the accident.

In a separate accident, five people were killed and two severely injured in a head-on car collision in the western city of Aachen early on Saturday.

Police said the likely cause of the accident was a speeding motorist.

'Doctor' arrested for injecting woman's rear with cement, glue

A 'fake doctor' suspected of injecting a woman's bottom with cement, super glue and tyre sealant to give her a more 'shapely' rear has been arrested.

The 30-year-old, who police say is a man but appears to look like a woman, was detained in Florida for the alleged incident in May 2010.

Miami Gardens Police Department Sargeant William Bamford said Morris first met with the as-yet unidentified victim to discuss the procedure.

He said, "They agreed on the price of $700 (Rs 36,000) which was intended for cosmetic purposes."
But instead, police say the victim was given a series of injections containing cement, mineral oil and Fix-A-Flat tyre inflator and sealant.

The incision was sealed with super glue. Shortly after the surgery was carried out, she went on to suffer 'severe complications'.

Bamford said, "A short time later she developed very serious pains in her abdomen, and throughout her body. She imediately realised something was wrong." He said the woman visited two local hospitals, before heading to Tampa General Hospital, where she received treatment.

She had developed an infection of drug-resistant bug MRSA at the wound and also developed pneumonia, but refused to reveal how it had happened. Morris has been charged with practising medicine without a licence and causing bodily harm.

The incident is the latest in a long line of instances where women have suffered complications following illegal bottom enhancement procedures.

Moore to 'punish' Ashton in divorce

Posted:

As a means of seeking revenge, the actress has told her lawyers to 'grab her husband's fortune'

Hell has no fury like a woman scorned. It appears the adage will hold true for Ashton Kutcher as Demi Moore is in no forgiving mood. Moore is determined to grab a slice of Ashton Kutcher's 90 million (Rs 730 crore) fortune -- in revenge for the betrayal that led her to seek a divorce.

In no forgiving mood: According to a close source to Moore, Ashton
has broken her heart and she is furious and wants to punish him financially.

Moore (49), once dubbed a cougar who fell for an ambitious toyboy, is said to have instructed her lawyers to 'punish him financially'.

Her edict is in spite of a pre-nuptial contract with Kutcher, -- which she insisted on when they married in 2005.
At the time she wanted to prevent him ever seeking a share of her 97 million pot (Rs 784 crore) of assets.

Tables have turned
Back then, Kutcher was just beginning his acting career while Moore had a fortune built up from roles in hit films.

But now Moore's career is on the wane and Kutcher is the one who commands major fees. He earns 500,000 (Rs 4.04 crore) an episode playing an internet billionaire in the TV sitcom Two And A Half Men and as much as 4 million (Rs 32.35 crore) a year as a successful investor in new technology projects, including Skype.

"With a pre-nuptial agreement, Ashton should be sitting pretty," said a source close to Moore's entourage.

"These agreements are designed to protect one's earnings during the marriage as well as one's pre-nuptial assets. But Demi is furious. You only have to look at every photo you see of her to see the toll Ashton's cheating has taken on her. She wants to punish him financially because of the way he has broken her heart.

She is talking about going after a share of what he has earned since their marriage on the grounds that she contributed to much of what he has achieved. She is going to give him a bitter fight and, whether or not she wins, it will be an expensive lesson for him."

Psychic told Demi to dump Ashton
Apparently it took a psychic to persuade Demi Moore to get rid of her husband. "She listened to a psychic who insisted that to save her health she had to stop clinging to the hope of saving the marriage. Her three daughters had been telling her the same thing, but it was the psychic that tipped the balance," said a friend.

>> Adnan Khashoggi's divorce from Soraya Khashoggi estimated at $874 million
>> Michael Jordan's divorce from Juanita Jordan estimated to exceed $150 million
>> Harrison Ford's divorce from Melissa Mathison at $118 million
