News reader who showed 'middle finger' to Obama, sacked

Posted:

A top Russian female news reader has been fired for allegedly trying to show US President Barack Obama her middle finger during a live newscast

An online footage of the incident showed Tatyana Limanova showing the camera her raised middle finger, while referring to Obama

Her employer, REN TV, a privately owned channel controlled by associates of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, described her gesture as "unacceptable" and "unprofessional".

"On 14 November during the ''News 24'' programme the presenter Limanova made an unacceptable gesture that was a synonym for an offensive expression," The Telegraph quoted the channel's statement, as saying.

The channel claimed the gesture was intended to her colleagues in the studio rather than Obama.

"It had no subtext and was not linked with the news that Limanova was reading at that moment," it said.

"A decision has been taken that T Limanova cannot and will not continue to work on the REN TV channel as a presenter," it added.

Sources close to the channel had previously tried to downplay the controversy by saying that Limanova thought she was off the camera, and merely providing a voice-over when she made the gesture.

Bikini-clad women to swim unprotected with sharks

A team of five swimmers in Durban, South Africa have planned to swim in the ocean for 24 hours with sharks without the protection of a cage

The swimmers' adviser, marine biologist and shark expert Ryan Johnson, said on 'The Early Show' from Durban, that the Nat Geo Wild team intends to work toward dispelling myths about sharks.

When asked about the endeavour's danger, Johnson said that safety measures were in place, such as a shark cage, medics on a boat and a helicopter on standby.

"In the small chance something does go wrong, we make sure we get them to safety as quickly as possible," CBS News quoted the marine biologist as saying.

But the show's draw isn't just the sharks, as Johnson said that the show's approach is a bit different from other wildlife programming.

"The biggest thing about this show is that we are not getting some crusty old shark divers into the water," he said.

"We are getting three very pretty girls who don't have that much experience with sharks, going out there and being guinea pigs and doing the test.

"We hope the girls do these experiments that they, themselves, believe that they can (swim) safely with sharks."

When asked how the women were persuaded to do the show, Johnson said they jumped at the chance to contribute to changing people's perceptions of sharks.

Johnson said that perceptions, created by films like 'Jaws', have endured.

"(Sharks) have been recognized or identified as man-eaters, that's what people see sharks as.

"To take one small step to show what sharks are really about. There are things can you do in the water that is responsible and irresponsible, but we really believe that education is the key," he added.

Woman gives birth to 13-pound baby, names him 'Jihad'

An obese German woman who reportedly has gestational diabetes and most likely a metabolic disorder, gave birth to a gigantic baby boy and named him Jihad

According to The Local, the newborn child, which is the mother's 14th kid weighs 13 pounds (six kilograms) sets a new record for Germany's heaviest naturally born baby.

The 40-year-old mom, who weighs 528 pounds (240 kilograms), was advised to go for C-section because of the high risks involved with such a large baby, but she pushed for a natural delivery on Wednesday at Berlin's Charite hospital.

Jihad's giant size is believed to be the result of his mother's untreated gestational diabetes.

Doctors claim that the woman was aware of her condition, but ate too much sweet food, resulting in her excessively high blood sugar level, News.com.au reported.

The mother previously had given birth to nine boys and four girls, four of whom were born with birth weights heavier than 11 pounds (five kilograms).

Babies over 8.8 pounds (four kilograms) are judged overweight at birth.

'Bikini Girl' strips again in protest of full bodied scanner

Corinne Theile, the Californian holidaymaker who had famously stripped down to her bikini at Los Angeles International Airport in protest of 'invasive' security screening a year earlier, has stripped again

Corinne, dubbed the 'Bikini Girl' has worn her swimsuit on seven flights over the past 12 months in dispute of TSA full body scanners, as she believes the X-rays release low levels of radiation and is an invasion of privacy.

The 32-year-old returned to the airport in a two-piece once more and declared that she'll continue to do so even when she's 80.

"If I'm 80 and I can go through security in a bikini, I'll do it," the Daily Mail quoted her as saying.

Instead of using TSA (Transportation Security Administration) security checks, which include the use of backscatter X-ray and millimetre wave detection, Corinne prefers wearing her bikini so security officers can see she has nothing to hide.

"I feel like the TSA is making travellers feel uncomfortable, and I feel like we can have security measures that don't make people feel uncomfortable," she had said last November.

"Every time I go through security I always say, 'I don't even know why I got dressed this morning.' I end up taking off belts, jewellery and everything else off anyway.

"I don't want to do a body scan and I'm hoping by wearing a bikini they will see everything they need to see and we can avoid a pat-down, as well," she had added.
