Wives of prisoners in Punjab will soon be allowed a brief stay with their husbands in jails, a minister said in Ludhiana on Monday. The new jails, which are under construction in the state, are having special barracks for the purpose, Jail Minister Hira Singh Gabria said.

Airlines have cancelled their flights to and from Kolkata on Tuesday in the wake of 24-hour long bandh call given by central trade unions to protest against price rise. Kingfisher has cancelled 29 flights, including one international, while Jet Airways and its low cost arm JetLite have cancelled a total of 70 flights to and from the city.

Around 55,000 auto-rickshaw drivers here would go on strike on Tuesday against the government directive for re-allotment of drivers' badges to them. "Around 10 years ago, we were issued temporary driver badges after we had paid Rs 400 and attended two-day class. 14-yr-old allegedly raped inside a car

A minor girl was allegedly raped by a 33-year-old inside a car on the busy Nagpur-Amravati road near Nagpur, police said on Monday. The 14-year-old victim was taken on a long drive by accused Rajesh Madavi when he parked the vehicle near Wadi octroi post and sexually abused the girl, they said. The incident took place on last Thursday and the victim, who knew Madavi, lodged the complaint on Sunday night, police said.

Three devotees killed, two injured in Bikaner

Three devotees were on Monday mowed down by a speeding private bus while two others were injured in Bikaner district near Jaipur, police said. The mishap occurred this morning near Raisar village on Bikaner-Jaipur highway when the devotees were on their way to a fair in Jaisalmer. Two devotees identified as Fakir Chand and Pawan Kumar died on the spot while Naseeb succumbed to his injuries on way to hospital, police said, adding, that the bus driver fled the spot after the incident.

Lucknow: Stamp paper vendor shot dead

A stamp paper vendor was shot dead allegedly by two unidentified persons in Chowk area in Lucknow, police said on Monday. Ram Kishore Yadav, was shot when he was returning home on Sunday night, they said. According to the police, the men shot two bullets into Yadav's chest from point blank range and snatched this bag having cash and stamp papers, they added. Police has launched a manhunt to nab the killers.

Lucknow: Minor girl raped by neighbour

The victim was taken by Ramesh Valmiki, who held her captive inside his house and raped her on Sunday, they said.
