REUTERS/Jim Young/Files (UNITED STATES - Tags: POLITICS)The Atlantic Wire - White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is reportedly planning to leave his position this week to return to Chicago, where he is expected to run for mayor. Last week, several sources reported that Emanuel would leave before the November elections. His long-discussed departure is no surprise, but the timing is unusual. Though economic advisers Larry Summers and Christina Romers both announced their retirements in recent months, they have little role in the upcoming elections, in which Emanuel would have played a crucial role had he stayed on. So why is he leaving so suddenly?

Jim DeMint, Palin's secret rival (The Daily Beast)

Posted: 27 Sep 2010 08:43 PM PDT

The Daily Beast - Last year, during a conference call with conservative activists, Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina raised the rhetorical stakes of the fight against President Obama’s health-reform effort. “If we are able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo,” a martial analogy that delighted the president’s left-of-center allies as a sure sign of right-wing overreach. At the time, moderate Republicans, and particularly moderate Republicans in swing states that had voted for President Obama in 2008, fretted about Senator DeMint’s tone, fearing that it was the death-rattle of a political party that was in danger of being reduced to a regional rump.

Posted: 28 Sep 2010 10:44 AM PDT

The Atlantic Wire - Justin Bieber made his acting debut on the season premiere of CSI last Thursday as a "young domestic terrorist attending right-wing political events and planning a bombing." As stunt casting goes, this is a meaty role. How does one explain CBS tapping Bieber for this part instead of the more Bieber-esque guy-who-gives-Marg-Helgenberger-a-DNA-sample-and-is-ruled-out-as-a-suspect? Could the network be using the young Canadian's star power to advance an anti-Tea Party agenda? In the opinion of Fox News' American Newsroom panel, almost certainly yes.
