A 11-year-old boy on Wednesday became the youngest person to be sentenced for stealing a waste bin worth £50 during the recent London riots. He was given an 18-month youth rehabilitation order at Havering Magistrates' Court in Essex after admitting burglary. The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, stole a waste bin from Debenhams in Romford, Essex, on August 8 after the windows of the store were smashed by looters.


Sri Lanka to probe human rights violations by its army

Over two years after Sri Lanka's final war against the LTTE, the Mahinda Rajapakse government has for the first time indirectly admitted that some of its army personnel may have indulged in human rights violations in the final phase of the war. They add that these army personnel may therefore be indicted in coming months. According to Rajiva Wijesinha, Adviser on Reconciliation to the Lankan President, some of these army personnel have been found guilty of killing civilians during the final phase of the war against the LTTE, and accordingly action will be taken against them.


China tests new aircraft carrier

China's first aircraft carrier has successfully completed its maiden sea trials and returned to a shipyard for further refurbishing, the Chinese Defence Ministry said on Wednesday. The 1,000-feet vessel is designed to carry 26 aircraft and 24 helicopters.

A great-great-grandmother in Britain is today the oldest person in the country to have undergone surgery for breast cancer, just ahead of celebrating her 100th birthday. Dorothy Affleck was diagnosed with the disease last summer and soon underwent an operation to remove the tumour at Tameside Hospital. Her surgeon, Pardeep Arora, was confident she would be strong enough to survive surgery so gave the procedure the green light.
