Holiday sales of PCs slide for first time in five years: IDC Posted: 10 Jan 2013 03:40 PM PST SEATTLE (Reuters) - Holiday season sales of personal computers fell for the first time in more than five years, according to tech industry tracker IDC, as Microsoft Corp's new Windows 8 operating system failed to excite buyers and many opted for tablet devices and powerful smartphones instead of PCs. PC makers such as Hewlett-Packard Co, Lenovo Group and Dell Inc sold 89.8 million PCs worldwide in the fourth quarter of last year, down 6.4 percent from the same quarter of 2011. That was slightly worse than expected by most. For all of 2012, 352 million PCs were sold, down 3.2 percent from 2011. ... |

Schiller pointed out that though Apple commanded just 20 percent of the smartphone market, it had 75 percent of the profit, according to an interview he gave the Shanghai Evening News. ... |
Lumia sales lift Nokia results and turnaround hopes Posted: 10 Jan 2013 10:01 AM PST HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia said strong sales of Lumia smartphones helped its mobile phone business achieve underlying profitability in the fourth quarter, raising hopes the struggling handset maker may be past the worst. The Finnish company, which has been losing market share to Samsung and Apple, said the better-than-expected result was also helped by cost cuts, a stronger-than-expected performance from its Nokia Siemens Networks unit and 50 million euros ($65.2 million) in patent royalties. ... |

How computer scientists are trying to stop smartphones and tablets from breaking the Internet Posted: 10 Jan 2013 08:53 PM PST There's just one problem with the post-PC mobile revolution: The Internet may not be designed to properly handle it. To understand why this is, recall that the Internet was originally designed to be something like the post office where packets of data are sent back and forth from one IP address to another based on information in the packet header. The problem is that none of the Internet's architects at the time could have known about all the mobile devices that would one day be hooked up to the Internet, from smartphones and tablets to vacuums and refrigerators. When you take all these devices into account, and you consider that they could easily create a logjam by all requesting the same |

Holiday PC sales dip for first time in five years Posted: 10 Jan 2013 06:28 PM PST LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Holiday-season sales of personal computers fell for the first time in more than five years, according to tech industry tracker IDC, as Microsoft Corp's new Windows 8 operating system failed to excite buyers and many instead opted for tablet devices and smartphones. FCC plans to free up large block of prime spectrum for Wi-Fi Posted: 10 Jan 2013 05:36 PM PST Good news for everyone who's tired of shoddy Wi-Fi connectivity in crowded cafes: the Federal Communications Commission is here to help. As CNET reports, FCC chairman Julius Genachowski made an important announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show on Wednesday when he discussed plans to free up 195MHz of spectrum on the 5GHz band, a move that will significantly boost Wi-Fi performance and ease congestion on crowded networks. The reallocation of spectrum on the 5GHz band would also represent "the largest block of unlicensed spectrum that has been made available for expansion of Wi-Fi since 2003," CNET writes. The 5GHz band is currently being used by numerous federal government agencies, although Genachowski expressed confidence that the FCC can work with others in |
Google now letting Android developers answer their critics in Google Play reviews Posted: 10 Jan 2013 04:19 PM PST In the past year Google (GOOG) has taken steps to eliminate excessive trolling in its Play Store. The company recently integrated Google+ profile names and pictures with Android app reviews and even began allowing some developers to respond to users' opinions. Google on Thursday revealed to The Next Web that the feature, which was originally for top developers only, has gradually expanded to "additional Google Play developers." Not only will this help establish better relationships between app developers and their customers, but it will also allow developers to provide feedback and answer questions to critical comments or concerns. Trevor Johns, developer programs engineer at Google, previously said that "conversations are meant to be two-sided, and facilitating discussion between developers and |

Whitman says it will take five years to turn HP around Posted: 10 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST To understand what an unholy mess HP (HPQ) is in right now, consider that CEO Meg Whitman says she needs more time to fix the company than she would have had to fix the entire California economy if she'd been elected governor. In a long Businessweek article about HP's current turmoil, Whitman says that it will take her five years to execute her full plan to turn the company around. Whitman acknowledges that "some people don't like that answer" when they ask her how long it will take, but she says it's simply a reality at this point. In the meantime, Whitman is trying to promote a new culture of thrift at the company by booting executives out of their |

27-inch iMac supply could be light through end of February Posted: 10 Jan 2013 01:05 PM PST Apple's (AAPL) new iMac computers are an engineering feat, but the All-in-One's striking design apparently has some downsides. Numerous reports have suggested Apple's manufacturing partner is having difficulties with the processes required to assemble the new iMac, which is just 5 millimeters thick at its edges. The case design is made possible by an "advanced welding process" that has proven difficult to accomplish, and now a new report suggests Apple's display panel supplier is having yield issues as well. Citing multiple unnamed industry sources, Digitimes on Thursday reported that LG Display (LPL) is having difficulties with the lamination process required to properly bond its display panels to the glass that covers them in the 27-inch iMac. "LG Display has reportedly |

Expect more suffering for Microsoft and HP in 2013 Posted: 10 Jan 2013 12:16 PM PST The PC industry is in shambles and no one is going to be hit harder than Microsoft (MSFT) and Intel (INTC), according to the latest forecasts from market research firm Canalys. Consumers continue to favor Android and iOS tablets over Windows and Intel (a.k.a., "Wintel") PCs. The research firm found that combined shipments of desktops, netbooks and notebooks in the fourth quarter of 2012 declined roughly 10% year-over-year. The Wintel PC market is expected to suffer further and is estimated to fall from a 72% market share in 2012 to a 65% share in 2013, representing a 5% decline in unit shipments. "Pads and, increasingly, smartphones can perform many of the day-to-day computing tasks that most people require," said Pin-Chen Tang |

Amazon and Samsung are running away with the Android tablet market Posted: 10 Jan 2013 11:44 AM PST Following the successful launch of Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet, Android vendors saw a beacon of hope in a market that had been dominated by Apple's (AAPL) iPad since 2010. The Android tablet space has since become flooded with hundreds of products from a wide-range of companies, but there are only two companies that matter. According to data from app analytics and ad service Datalytics, Samsung (005930) and Amazon (AMZN) are starting to run away with the Android tablet market, Venture Beat reported. Ad impressions on the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD grew 322% from November to the end of December, while impressions on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Tab 7.7 increased a combined total of 150%. Apple could spend much of 2013 patching its big Achilles’ heel: Web services Posted: 10 Jan 2013 11:14 AM PST Let's face it: Apple's (AAPL) Maps fiasco wouldn't have been such a big deal if it were just a one-time mistake. But as AllThingsD's John Paczkowski points out, Apple has a history of delivering sub par Web-based services, from Maps to Ping to MobileMe. From this perspective, it isn't hard to see why Apple executives were supposedly "seething" when they saw how happy their own users were to download the newest iOS version of Google Maps to their iPhones — for all the many things the company does right, it has been frustratingly unable to make a name for itself in the increasingly important web services market. Paczkowski speculates that Apple will spend a lot of the next year redoubling its |
Apple Says Cheap iPhones 'Will Never Be the Future' Posted: 10 Jan 2013 11:05 AM PST Apple almost never addresses rumors about its products, so now that Apple SVP of marketing Phil Schiller has flatly denied this week's ongoing whispers about the company's alleged plans to develop a potentially sub-$100 iPhone, the rumormongers must have gotten this one very wrong. Apple’s Schiller says cheap smartphones will ‘never be the future of Apple products’ Posted: 10 Jan 2013 10:31 AM PST Apple (AAPL) may sell a cheaper iPhone, but don't expect it to sell for the bargin bin prices that we've heard about through rumors so far. In an interview with the Shanghai Evening News this week, Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller said that cheap smartphones will "never be the future of Apple products," although he never explicitly ruled out selling a cheaper version of the iPhone. Apple's reluctance to fight companies such as LG (066570) and Nokia (NOK) by flooding emerging markets with low-cost smartphones all boils down to one thing: Margins. As Schiller explains, Apple isn't too concerned about its relatively low market share in emerging markets because "although Apple's market share of smartphones is just about 20%, we own the |
