Russia rejects Assad exit as precondition for Syria deal Posted: 12 Jan 2013 11:41 AM PST MOSCOW/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Russia voiced support on Saturday for international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi but insisted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's exit cannot be a precondition for a deal to end the country's conflict. Some 60,000 Syrians have been killed during the 21-month-old revolt and world powers are divided over how to stop the escalating bloodshed. Government aircraft bombed outer districts of Damascus on Saturday after being grounded for a week by stormy weather, opposition activists in the capital said. ... |

Mubarak and former interior minister Habib al-Adli were sentenced to life in prison in June last year in a court ruling that saw them responsible for the deaths of protesters killed by security forces trying to quell the uprising. "The court has ruled to accept the appeal filed by the defendants ... and orders a retrial," Judge Ahmed Ali Abdel Rahman said. ... |

Olmert, who once led the centrist Kadima party, told Israel's Channel 2 television on Friday that 11 billion shekels (about $3 billion) were wasted on "illusionary security escapades that have not been implemented and will not be implemented". ... |

Egypt's loan agreement was approved in principle in November, but subsequent turmoil forced the government to delay a series of bitter austerity measures deemed necessary to win the IMF board's final approval. Addressing a business forum in Cairo, Prime Minister Hisham Kandil said government had agreed a "home-grown fiscal and financial program" as part of the deal. ... |
