The shooting was reported by the Hazard Community and Technical College, located southeast of Lexington, in a brief online alert that said only: "Shooting at HCTC Hazard Campus." According to local news reports citing a college administrator, the shooting occurred at about 4:30 p.m. local time, prompting a security "lockdown" of the campus.
