Indian techies in S Korea expose fat salary lie Posted: Anand Sharma is one of the many software engineers from India who came to South Korea dreaming of big money and early rise in career but who are now desperate to return home. Sharma, a 32-year-old software engineer, belongs to Madhya Pradesh. Dreaming of better job prospects and huge earnings, he had come to Seoul six months back. Today, however, he is an unhappy man watching his dreams crumble before his eyes. His salary, which he thought was handsome when he accepted the job offer, is not sufficient to sustain a decent lifestyle in Seoul, one of Asia's few 'First World cities'. Needless to say, savings are well-nigh impossible. Many other engineers from India find themselves in the same plight as Sharma. They, too, had come to South Korea in search of better career prospects but are finding it tough surviving on their salaries. Most engineers, in fact, are not willing to extend their stay here beyond one year, the minimum contract period. This is so despite the fact that South Korean companies are keen to employ Indian engineers and are willing to pay them salaries that are impressive by Indian standards. |

Police are trying to verify the authenticity of the letter as the note is not signed. Four out of seven policemen are still in captivity. The Naxals had killed three policemen on September 19. |

Bangalore BPO employee murder: Verdict on Oct 6 Posted: A fast track court will deliver its verdict in the Pratibha Murthy murder case on October 6. Pratibha Murthy, a BPO employee in Bangalore was raped and killed while on her way for night-shift duty in December 2005. The prime accused in the case is Shivu alias Shivakumar. He was the substitute cab driver who picked Pratibha up from home. In July 2006, the case was referred to a fast-track court. Over four years, three different judges have heard the arguments. There are no eye-witnesses in the case and the court has had to rely on circumstantial evidence and mobile phone records. |
J&K: Yechury could head group of interlocutors? Posted: The government is finalising the composition of the new group of Kashmir interlocutors as part of a fresh peace initiative. Sources say, unlike in the past, a senior politician will head this group and among the names under consideration is that of Sitaram Yechury and Ram Vilas Paswan who first proposed the recent meeting between members of the all party delegates and key separatists in the valley. Speaking to NDTV, Arun Jaitley who was part of the all party delegation said that the BJP would support such a bi-partisan political group but added that tackling talks with separatists remained the tricky part. |
Leo wants to fight for the tiger; could come to India Posted: On the face of it, it was a meeting to talk on a variety of issues that concern the environment- from fighting climate change to protection of bio-diversity. But when Hollywood heart-throb Leonardo Dicaprio met India's Minister for Environment and Forests, Jairam Ramesh, his heart was really beating for tiger. |

Rajasthan’s literacy battle: Beyond the numbers Posted: India's standing is far lower than the African nations as far as education is concerned. For instance, in Rajasthan while the government insists that literacy has doubled in the last decade, the quality of education has plummeted and the student teacher ratio is abysmal. At Kamlu Ki Dhaani, about 60 kms from Alwar, children don't even have a school building and the 116 children enrolled in the school sit under a tree. The government claims that the student teacher ratio is about 30 students to 1 teacher but this gets skewed when one gets away from the cities. At Kamlu Ki Dhaani, 116 children have just one teacher. The villagers are angry because despite donating their land for the school, the government fund to make the building is stuck in red tape. |
Kashmir: Schools reopen, Chidambaram warns stone-pelters Posted: Home Minister P Chidambaram issued a stern warning to stone-pelters in Kashmir today, after a few incidents of stone-pelting on school buses were reported. After remaining shut for 100 days, schools in the Kashmir Valley reopened with students and teachers given a free passage by security forces despite curfew and restrictions in many parts. |
First day after Centre's 8-point peace agenda, curfew relaxed in Kashmir Posted: The first day after the Centre announced its 8-point peace formula for Kashmir saw curfew being relaxed in Srinagar, and lifted from many other parts of the valley. Hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has announced a new calendar of strikes for the next ten days. But the state government says it will reopen schools. |
Varun Gandhi to get married, Maneka says Sonia will be invited Posted: Rahul Gandhi may be ducking queries on his marriage plans but wedding bells are all set to ring for his cousin and BJP's Young Turk Varun Gandhi. Varun's mother and BJP MP from Aonla parliamentary constituency Maneka Gandhi has said that the 30-year-old leader will tie the nuptial knot with a Bengali girl this year itself. |
