Posted: 02 Oct 2011 08:02 AM PDT In a season of scams, the biggest one has gone undetected, that of black money spent in every election. Politicians typically shrug it off, saying that historically they have always entered Parliament with a 'lie on our lips'. Except that, now, the lie has gotten bigger. It is, by one estimate, the Rs. 81,500 crore lie. Many say electoral reforms can tackle this. But we expose how political parties have sabotaged every attempt to clean up a political system rife with corruption, criminality and lack of internal democracy. |

BJP tells cadre: Prime Minister not confident, be ready for polls Posted: 02 Oct 2011 02:45 AM PDT As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continued its attack on the Congress at the end of its two-day national executive meet in New Delhi, glaring differences remain within the party on who should be its face as it gets set for the elections in 2014. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, whose path to the Centre seemed well in the works, may have a tougher road ahead than he may have foreseen. |
Illegal drug trials on victims of Bhopal gas tragedy Posted: 02 Oct 2011 01:16 AM PDT Nearly three decades after the Bhopal gas tragedy, comes a new horror for the victims. 279 people were illegally tested for new drugs without their knowledge or consent at the Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) - one of the several violations that took place while conducting 10 clinical trials at the hospital. |

Lokpal Bill: CBI opposes inclusion, demands greater autonomy Posted: 01 Oct 2011 11:54 AM PDT The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is strongly opposed to its inclusion under the Lokpal - the new anti-corruption body that will investigate charges of graft against those holding public offices. This is what NDTV has learnt after the director of the premier investigating agency appeared before the Lokpal Standing Committee in Parliament today chaired by Congress Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi. |
'Govt in suicidal mode, but are we ready?' Asks BJP at party meet Posted: 01 Oct 2011 11:37 AM PDT The BJP today raised the pitch of its battle against the Manmohan Singh government by declaring that it won't last its full term, as it had completely lost all credibility. Speaking after the two day national executive meet of the party's top leaders in New Delhi, Arun Jaitley, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, said the BJP needs to be prepared for early polls. |

Did CAG hike 2G loss estimate? Posted: 01 Oct 2011 09:19 AM PDT In a report submitted to the government last year, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India pegged the losses to the national exchequer due to the 2G spectrum allocation at a mind-boggling Rs. 1.76 lakh crore. But a letter accessed through Right to Information (RTI) Act now reveals that CAG could have hiked the 2G loss estimate. |
