UK's largest footwear chain slammed for 'sexualised' footwear for 6-yr tots Posted: UK's largest footwear chain has been slammed for selling sexy stilettos aimed at girls as young as six as they tend to sexualise children. Priceless Shoes, which is selling the 5-inch stilettos has even reduced the price of the shoes from 16 pounds to 7 pounds to sell the adult-sounding Queen of the Catwalk style shoes. "They look like the sort of thing a lap dancer would wear. It's utterly disgusting. I went to the shop to buy her some gold party shoes," the Sun quoted Sarah Shafi, the mother of a 7-year-old as saying. "These open-toed black stilettos were reduced from 16 pounds to 7 pounds. They were size one, so I guess they are aimed at the six to eight years range. "They look exactly like an adult pair that has been shrunk for the kids' market. I find it sick. "Also children's feet are still developing. They could end up deformed," she stated. |

Cancer patient hails 'kind' Duchess Posted: The Duchess of Cambridge's visit to a children's cancer unit in south London left a young patient praising the royal's kindness after she promised to leave a message on his blog. Prince William meets patient Ellis Andrews as he and his wife open a children's cancer unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton. Pics/AFP Kate made the pledge to nine-year-old Fabian Bate as she opened the Royal Marsden's new 18 million (Rs 137 crore) cancer centre with her husband William. Caring royals: Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge meets cancer patient Fabian Bate and promises to a personal message on his family blog. The visit was Kate's first official invite to a hospital. Following her husband's lead, she patiently chatted with the cancer patients at the Oak Centre for Children and Young People at the Royal Marsden Hospital. The Duchess, wearing a cream Amanda Wakeley dress and LK Bennett shoes, has been making private visits to charities and good causes so she can decide which organisations she will patronise -- a process that was described as "going well" by St James's Palace. In the centre, the royal couple met Fabian, who was in the middle of four hours of chemotherapy for his acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, and the Duchess promised to post a personal message on his family blog. He was with his mother Lydia (50) and father Darrell, (49) as well as his two older sisters Ollie and Cassia who had come to be with him during treatment. Bate's mother said, "William told him he is so brave, and he seemed genuinely sad about Fabian's situation. Kate asked loads of questions and said she was sorry the treatment hadn't worked first time round. "When we told her about the blog she said 'I'll look that up and post a message'. She sounded like she really meant it so we'll see." Fabian said, "They were kind. William said I was brave." |
Putin is more popular than I am: Medvedev Posted: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has defended his controversial decision to step down as Russian president next year in favour of Vladimir Putin, explaining that his mentor and rival is simply more popular than him. Time's up: It appears Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is telling PM Vladimir Putin that his term as president is done and that Putin should take his place. Pic/AFP In an interview on state TV, Medvedev said that Putin, currently the prime minister, enjoyed a higher popularity rating and was more authoritative than him. "Prime Minister Putin is unquestionably the most authoritative politician in the country right now and his rating is somewhat higher (than mine)," he said. "For some reason, nobody is talking about that. But in fact these are practical and very important questions that any politician who wants the best for his country needs to take into account." A poll by the independent Levada polling agency earlier this month showed that Putin enjoyed an approval rating of 68 per cent, while Medvedev's rating was slightly lower at 62 per cent. Medvedev's comments seemed like a calculated response to criticism of his decision not to run for a second presidential term. He said last Saturday that he would pass the presidency back to Putin who has held it twice before and was ready to take on the prime minister's job instead. The admission disappointed many of Medvedev's supporters. Russia faces parliamentary election in December and a presidential poll in March but most analysts agree that the results are now preordained with Putin's United Russia party set to sweep the board in December and Putin likely to clinch a third term in the Kremlin in March. 68% Putin's approval ratings in a recently conducted poll |
Posted: Anwar al-Awlaqi, the US-born radical Muslim cleric, who has been linked to 9/11, was killed in Yemen US-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaqi, a prominent al-Qaeda chief described by US officials as "the most significant risk" to the United States, was killed yesterday in what analysts called a "significant blow." A senior US official confirmed Awlaqi's death after an announcement by the Yemeni defence ministry. "I can confirm... he's dead," the senior administration official said, without providing further details. Major setback: Anwar al-Awlaqi's Internet sermons had made him a leading figure in al-Qaeda. His death has been called a significant blow to the terror outfit. File pic/AFP In Sanaa, the defence ministry said Awlaqi was killed yesterday morning but did not elaborate on the circumstances of his death. Tribal sources said that Awlaqi, who was on a US wanted list, was killed in an air strike on two vehicles in Marib province, an al-Qaeda stronghold in eastern Yemen. Several other suspected al-Qaeda operatives were also reported killed. One tribal source said that the plane that launched the sir strike was likely to have been American. "US planes have been flying overhead for days now," said the tribal source who requested anonymity. "Then in the morning, what appeared to be a US aircraft fired on the two cars Awlaqi and his fellow operatives are believed to have been travelling in," he said. US Republican Representative Peter King, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, called Awlaqi's killing "a great success in our fight against al-Qaeda and its affiliates." "For the past several years, al-Awlaqi has been more dangerous even than Osama bin Laden had been. The killing of al-Awlaqi is a tremendous tribute to President (Barack) Obama and the men and women of our intelligence community," he said. |
Al-Qaeda leader Anwar al-Awlaki killed: Yemen Defence Ministry Posted: US-born radical Islamic cleric and Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula leader Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed, the Yemen Defence Ministry has said. The Ministry said that Awlaki was killed with several other suspected Al-Qaeda operatives, but did not elaborate on the circumstances of his death.
Awlaki was linked to the 2009 Christmas Day "underwear bomber" plot - a narrowly foiled bid to blow up a passenger jet approaching Detroit. He was also linked to the failed Times Square bomb attempt in May last year. According to US officials, Awlaki was a senior talent recruiter and motivator, who had also become "operational" as a planner and trainer "for Al-Qaeda and all of its franchises". Awlaki's targeted killing was approved by US President Barack Obama, with the consent of the US National Security Council by April 2010, making him the first US citizen ever placed on the CIA target list. Officials had said that it was appropriate, as he poses an imminent danger to national security. |
