Posted: Film icon Elizabeth Taylor was laid to rest in the same celebrity cemetery as her long-time friend Michael Jackson -- and demonstrated a keen sense of humour to the end. The legendary actress, who died Wednesday aged 79, was sent off with an hour-long private ceremony at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, where generations of Hollywood stars are buried. But her last wishes were respected, and announced after the service had finished. "The service was scheduled to begin at 2 pm, but at Taylor's request it started late," said a statement by her publicist. "Miss Taylor had left instructions that it was to begin at least 15 minutes later than publicly scheduled, with the announcement: 'She even wanted to be late for her own funeral," it added. The film legend and violet-eyed beauty, famed as much for her stormy love life as her five-decade Oscar-winning film career, died early Wednesday from congestive heart failure at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai hospital. Tributes poured in from Hollywood and beyond for the actress. Irish actor Colin Farrell gave a recital of the Gerard Manley Hopkins' poem The Leaden Echo and the Golden Echo, while other readings were done by her children and grandchildren, said her publicist. Forest Lawn is where Jackson was buried following his death in June 2009 from an overdose of the powerful sedative propofol. Taylor attended that private ceremony. "I don't think anyone knew how much we loved each other," Taylor said after his death. "I loved Michael with all my soul and I can't imagine life without him. We had so much in common and we had such loving fun together." |

Austin's son, David said, "We are delighted to add this exquisite new rose to our portfolio of cut flowers. We have named it Kate as a tribute to the happy couple. We are expecting it to become a firm favourite with brides." The news that the raspberry pink bloom will be the eighth addition to the cut rose collection was revealed at a free workshop for brides-to-be looking for tips to create their own personal wedding themes. |
Posted: Says Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan, as officials suspect another breach in reactor at the nuclear plant "The situation at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant is still very grave and serious. We must remain vigilant," Kan said. "We are not in a position where we can be optimistic. We must treat every development with the utmost care." The uncertain situation halted work at the nuclear complex, where dozens had been trying feverishly to stop the overheated plant from leaking dangerous radiation. The plant has leaked some low levels of radiation, but a breach could mean a much larger release of contaminants. Suspicions of a possible breach were raised when two workers waded into water 10,000 times more radioactive than levels normally found in water in or around a reactor and suffered skin burns, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said. 'Am sorry' He also thanked utility workers, firefighters and military personnel for "risking their lives" to cool the overheated facility. Police said the official death toll jumped past 10,000 yesterday. With the cleanup and recovery operations continuing and more than 17,400 listed as missing, the final number of dead was expected to surpass 18,000. Fans line up overnight for iPad 2 Posted: Hundreds of customers queued outside Apple stores in Asia and Europe to buy an iPad 2 tablet computer amid fears that shortages in the United States would be repeated abroad. Yesterday, the rollout was extended to 25 countries including most of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Mexico. Canadian backpacker Alex Lee was the first to claim his iPad 2 at the Apple store in Sydney where he had been in line for two nights. "If it wasn't for the iPad, I wouldn't be in Australia right now," said Lee, who had already bought an iPad 2 in the United States. In London, financial adviser Jewels Lewis was at the head of the queue at Apple's Regent Street store. |
At least 75 killed in Myanmar quake Posted: A powerful earthquake that toppled homes in northeastern Myanmar has killed more than 70 people, and there were fears the toll would mount as conditions in more remote areas became known. The Thursday night quake, measured at magnitude 6.8 by the US Geological Survey, was centered just north of Tachileik town in Shan State near the Thai border. It was felt hundreds of miles (kilometers) away in the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Vietnamese capital, Hanoi. Myanmar state radio announced yesterday that 74 people had been killed and 111 injured in the quake, but was updating the total frequently. It said 390 houses, 14 Buddhist monasteries and nine government buildings were damaged. In Mae Sai, one woman was killed when a wall fell on her, according to Thai police, but damage was otherwise minimal. The second UN official said medicine would be sent to the affected areas as soon as possible along with an assessment team in cooperation with the Myanmar Red Cross Society.World Vision said it would provide 250 households with basic necessities, such as food and water. "We are worried that the area might be hit with stronger quakes. There was another quake at 7 am this morning," said Somsri Meethong of the Mae Sai District office, referring to a 4.9 aftershock. "I had to run again like last night. What we have seen on TV about Japan added to our fear." |
Gaddafi's plastic surgery exposed Posted: Brazilian doctor reveals Libyan leader asked for hair plugs and for belly fat to be injected into his face to avoid looking old "He told me that he had been in power for 25 years at that time, and that he did not want the young people of his nation to see him as an old man," Dr Liacyr Ribeiro recounted."I recommended a face-lift, but he refused" because he feared it would look too obvious. Gaddafi insisted the secret, four-hour surgery be done with local anesthesia because he wanted to be alert throughout the entire procedure. The surgeon told Brazilian weekly Epoca that he's speaking out now -- as Gaddafi fights rebels and Western coalition forces -- because he wanted "to contribute to understanding this historic figure around whom there is much speculation but little information." Ribeiro said he had been contacted in 1994 by then-Libyan Health Minister Mohamed Zaid while attending a conference in Tripoli. After the lecture, Zaid approached him and said he wanted to introduce him to someone special. Ribeiro thought he was going to be introduced to Zaid's wife. Gaddafi was 53-years-old at the time of the surgery. After he went under the knife, Ribeiro said, Gaddafi looked like a youthful 45-year-old.Dr Fabio Naccache, another Brazilian doctor who was part of the surgery team, confirmed Ribeiro's claims. The doctor told Gaddafi, who's noticeably wrinklier today at the age of 68, that the results would last only five years. Ribeiro said Gaddafi requested another procedure five years ago but that Ribeiro had a family obligation at the time. "They never called me again," he said. |
