Taylor late for own funeral

Posted:

Film icon Elizabeth Taylor was laid to rest in the same celebrity cemetery as her long-time friend Michael Jackson -- and demonstrated a keen sense of humour to the end. The legendary actress, who died Wednesday aged 79, was sent off with an hour-long private ceremony at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, where generations of Hollywood stars are buried.

But her last wishes were respected, and announced after the service had finished. "The service was scheduled to begin at 2 pm, but at Taylor's request it started late," said a statement by her publicist. "Miss Taylor had left instructions that it was to begin at least 15 minutes later than publicly scheduled, with the announcement: 'She even wanted to be late for her own funeral," it added.

The film legend and violet-eyed beauty, famed as much for her stormy love life as her five-decade Oscar-winning film career, died early Wednesday from congestive heart failure at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai hospital. Tributes poured in from Hollywood and beyond for the actress.

Irish actor Colin Farrell gave a recital of the Gerard Manley Hopkins' poem The Leaden Echo and the Golden Echo, while other readings were done by her children and grandchildren, said her publicist.

Forest Lawn is where Jackson was buried following his death in June 2009 from an overdose of the powerful sedative propofol. Taylor attended that private ceremony. "I don't think anyone knew how much we loved each other," Taylor said after his death. "I loved Michael with all my soul and I can't imagine life without him. We had so much in common and we had such loving fun together."

A world-renowned rose grower from the Midlands is saying it with flowers by launching two new varieties named after Royal bride Kate Middleton. Delighted staff at David Austin Roses said the new English roses were their "personal tribute".

The striking raspberry pink cut rose, Kate, will be exclusively available from the family-run nurseries in Albrighton. And in May, the rose breeder will celebrate another exclusive when it presents the new English Rose garden shrub William and Catherine at the Chelsea Flower Show.

Austin's son, David said, "We are delighted to add this exquisite new rose to our portfolio of cut flowers. We have named it Kate as a tribute to the happy couple. We are expecting it to become a firm favourite with brides." The news that the raspberry pink bloom will be the eighth addition to the cut rose collection was revealed at a free workshop for brides-to-be looking for tips to create their own personal wedding themes.

'Situation's very grave'

Says Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan, as officials suspect another breach in reactor at the nuclear plant

A suspected breach in the core of a reactor at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant could mean more serious radioactive contamination, Japanese officials revealed yesterday, as the prime minister called the country's ongoing fight to stabilise the plant "very grave and serious." A somber Prime Minister Naoto Kan sounded a pessimistic note at a briefing hours after nuclear safety officials announced what could be a major setback in the urgent mission to stop the plant from leaking radiation, two weeks after a devastating earthquake and tsunami disabled it.

"The situation at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant is still very grave and serious. We must remain vigilant," Kan said. "We are not in a position where we can be optimistic. We must treat every development with the utmost care." The uncertain situation halted work at the nuclear complex, where dozens had been trying feverishly to stop the overheated plant from leaking dangerous radiation. The plant has leaked some low levels of radiation, but a breach could mean a much larger release of contaminants.

Suspicions of a possible breach were raised when two workers waded into water 10,000 times more radioactive than levels normally found in water in or around a reactor and suffered skin burns, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said.

'Am sorry'
Kan apologised to farmers and business owners for the toll the radiation has had on their livelihoods: Several countries have halted some food imports from areas near the plant after milk and produce were found to contain elevated levels of radiation.

He also thanked utility workers, firefighters and military personnel for "risking their lives" to cool the overheated facility. Police said the official death toll jumped past 10,000 yesterday. With the cleanup and recovery operations continuing and more than 17,400 listed as missing, the final number of dead was expected to surpass 18,000.

Resilient residents
However, there were examples of resilience, patience and fortitude across the region. In Soma, rubble covered the block where Hiroshi Suzuki's home once stood. "I never expected to have to live through anything like this," he said mournfully. "My business is gone. I don't think I will ever be able to recover," said Suzuki. Still, he managed to find a bright side. "The one good thing is the way everyone is pulling together and helping each other. No one is stealing or looting," he said. "It makes me feel proud to be Japanese."

Donation scam
The Red Cross has warned prospective donors who want to give money to the Japan Tsunami Appeal to beware scam e-mails purporting to be from the charity. A spokesman for the charity said: "There are some fraudulent e-mails circulating claiming to be raising money for the Japan Tsunami Appeal. These may request that you donate through companies like Western Union or Money Bookers, which we would never do. If you suspect an e-mail is fraudulent please do not click on any links.

Canadian backpacker Alex Lee was the first to claim his iPad 2 at the Apple store in Sydney where he had been in line for two nights. "If it wasn't for the iPad, I wouldn't be in Australia right now," said Lee, who had already bought an iPad 2 in the United States. In London, financial adviser Jewels Lewis was at the head of the queue at Apple's Regent Street store.

At least 75 killed in Myanmar quake

Posted:

A powerful earthquake that toppled homes in northeastern Myanmar has killed more than 70 people, and there were fears the toll would mount as conditions in more remote areas became known. The Thursday night quake, measured at magnitude 6.8 by the US Geological Survey, was centered just north of Tachileik town in Shan State near the Thai border. It was felt hundreds of miles (kilometers) away in the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Vietnamese capital, Hanoi.

Myanmar state radio announced yesterday that 74 people had been killed and 111 injured in the quake, but was updating the total frequently. It said 390 houses, 14 Buddhist monasteries and nine government buildings were damaged. In Mae Sai, one woman was killed when a wall fell on her, according to Thai police, but damage was otherwise minimal.

The second UN official said medicine would be sent to the affected areas as soon as possible along with an assessment team in cooperation with the Myanmar Red Cross Society.World Vision said it would provide 250 households with basic necessities, such as food and water. "We are worried that the area might be hit with stronger quakes. There was another quake at 7 am this morning," said Somsri Meethong of the Mae Sai District office, referring to a 4.9 aftershock. "I had to run again like last night. What we have seen on TV about Japan added to our fear."

Aftershocks
An aftershock, an estimated magnitude of 5.5, rattled Thailand yesterday but caused limited damage, although residents living close to the epicentre were advised to leave their homes.

Gaddafi's plastic surgery exposed

Brazilian doctor reveals Libyan leader asked for hair plugs and for belly fat to be injected into his face to avoid looking old

Moammar Gaddafi wanted to be bold and beautiful. The Libyan strongman underwent cosmetic surgery in 1995, instructing a plastic surgeon to give him hair plugs and remove his belly fat to inject into his wrinkly face, a Brazilian doctor claims.

"He told me that he had been in power for 25 years at that time, and that he did not want the young people of his nation to see him as an old man," Dr Liacyr Ribeiro recounted."I recommended a face-lift, but he refused" because he feared it would look too obvious.

Gaddafi insisted the secret, four-hour surgery be done with local anesthesia because he wanted to be alert throughout the entire procedure.

The surgeon told Brazilian weekly Epoca that he's speaking out now -- as Gaddafi fights rebels and Western coalition forces -- because he wanted "to contribute to understanding this historic figure around whom there is much speculation but little information."

Ribeiro said he had been contacted in 1994 by then-Libyan Health Minister Mohamed Zaid while attending a conference in Tripoli. After the lecture, Zaid approached him and said he wanted to introduce him to someone special. Ribeiro thought he was going to be introduced to Zaid's wife.

But the government official drove Ribeiro to a guarded home, where he met Gaddafi. The surgery was scheduled for the next year.Halfway through the procedure, which took place in the middle of the night Gaddafi took a break and ate a hamburger, said the prominent doctor, who is said to have performed cosmetic surgery on Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Gaddafi was 53-years-old at the time of the surgery. After he went under the knife, Ribeiro said, Gaddafi looked like a youthful 45-year-old.Dr Fabio Naccache, another Brazilian doctor who was part of the surgery team, confirmed Ribeiro's claims.

The doctor told Gaddafi, who's noticeably wrinklier today at the age of 68, that the results would last only five years. Ribeiro said Gaddafi requested another procedure five years ago but that Ribeiro had a family obligation at the time. "They never called me again," he said.

Going under the Knife
Other than Gaddafi, Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi has also undergone plastic surgery. Berlusconi said that he only had surgery performed around his eyes and that he was in excellent health.

Did you know?
All of Gaddafi bodyguards are women, who are virgins. Gaddafi says he wants to see beautiful girls around him and wants to die in the lap of some beautiful virgin guard.

Surrender?
Forces loyal to Gaddafi are said to be negotiating to surrender to rebel troops in what could be a significant turning point in the conflict. A rebel commander, Ahmed Omar Bani, a former Libyan air force colonel said that local mullahs in the contested town of Ajdabiya had been used to mediate talks.
