More than 700 Thai and foreign tourists were shipped or airlifted to safety off islands in southern Thailand Thursday, after heavy flooding which has left at least 15 people dead. A Thai navy vessel docked carried people from popular tourist destination islands off the coast of Surat Thani province to Suvarnabhumi International Airport and other destinations like Bangkok and Pattaya.

57 people dead in Iraq hostage crisis

Dramatic footage of a deadly hostage situation at a government building in northern Iraq was released on Wednesday. On Tuesday afternoon ten gunmen wearing explosive belts under military uniforms had charged into the provincial council building in Tikrit, 130 kilometers north of Baghdad. 57 people have so far been counted dead and 98 wounded, according to hospital figures as the gunmen shot hostages execution-style, and sprayed bullets and grenades throughout the building during a five-hour standoff.

A manager from the Tokyo Electric Power Company explained how the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant had been slammed by a mammoth tsunami and rocked by hydrogen explosions and had become highly radioactive. Some workers wept.


CIA agents in Libya aid airstrikes and meet rebels

The Central Intelligence Agency has inserted clandestine operatives into Libya to gather intelligence for military airstrikes and to contact and vet the beleaguered rebels battling Col. Muammar el-Gaddafi's forces, according to American officials.
