A major fire broke out at the Chemistry Department in the Baker Building of Presidency University at 4:30 am on Friday morning. Eleven fire engines were rushed to the site to fight the blaze, sources said, adding that there was no casualty.

Metro stretch in Dwarka to open on Saturday

Delhi Metro's network will expand a little on Saturday when a new stretch in Dwarka will be made operational, benefiting thousands of people in the sub-city. The 2.76-km stretch from Dwarka Sector 9 to Dwarka Sector 21 will be thrown open to the public on October 30 after it received the mandatory clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety.

A Gujarat court on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment a man who raped his minor daughter. Passing the sentence on 34-year-old Bharatsinh Rathod, a resident of in Amraiwadi area in the city, Additional Sessions Judge PA Waghela termed his offence "unforgivable".

A 43-year-old Sri Lankan national was arrested at the airport in Chennai for allegedly smuggling diamonds worth Rs 1.5 crore hidden in a condom, police said on Thursday. The accused, Mohammed Kabir, had arrived in Chennai by an Air India Express from Colombo last evening and when police questioned him on suspicion, he gave inconsistent replies and later confessed he had hidden the diamonds in a condom which he had swallowed, they said.

Four people died and 10 were rescued after an explosion in what is believed to have been a illegal firecrackers factory caused the entire two-storey building in Kanpur to collapse. The police have ruled out a terror attack. A senior officer said preliminary investigations indicated that the explosion occurred in the room of a ward boy, Rajesh, who is suspected to have been manufacturing illegal fireworks, which exploded. The police also found gunpowder at the location. The building had residential quarters for workers of a community health centre.

51,576 fake university degrees in state: CBI
