Almost a quarter of Interner users spend more time online than they do asleep, a new survey has found.

According to the survey commissioned by Sky Broadband, 51 percent admit to suffering from "e-anxiety" if they are unable to check their emails or Facebook page, the Daily Mail reported.

The survey also found that men spend a larger chunk of their time online.

While one in three check their personal emails more than six times a day outside of work, one in 20 check their emails more than 20 times every day, which is the equivalent of once every 45 minutes, and one in seven check their social media accounts more than six times a day.

Man jailed for leaving woman chained on island

Posted:

A man in the western Siberia's Omsk city has been sentenced to a year in prison for chaining a woman on an island over a debt dispute

Alexei Kolchanov, who accused the woman of stealing 200,000 rubles (around $6,400) from him, took her out to a river island and abandoned her there.

"On July 19, 2011, the accused...beat his acquaintance up demanding his money back, forced her onto a boat and took her to an island, where he put a chain around her neck with a perforated canister so she could not swim across to the bank, and left her there," Omsk's investigative unit said in a statement Thursday.

The woman then found a large piece of styrofoam or thermocol and was able to reach the middle of the Irtysh river where she was picked up by fishermen.

It was unclear how long the woman was stranded on the island.

I'm not sorry, you're dumb: Thief to victims

Posted:

A 16-year-old burglar, who was thought to expressing remorse while in rehabilitation, instead rubbed salt into his victims' wounds by describing them as being dumb enough for turning their house a target of thieves like him!

"Instead of apologising for stealing valuables from a family home, he told the owners through a letter: 'To be honest I'm not bothered or sorry about the fact that I burgled your house'," the Daily Mail reported.

The habitual burglar, who stole a computer games console, an interactive entertainment computer, camera, camcorder, two TVs and two speakers in the raid in Moortown, a suburb in Leeds, told the victims that they alone were to blame.

Most of the items were seized after the teenager was arrested by West Yorkshire police.

The offender, who has not been identified, was put on an Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Programme (ISSP) as punishment for his latest crime.

The letter read: "Dear Victim. I don't no why I am writing a letter to you! I have been forced to write this letter by ISSP. To be honest, I'm not bothered or sorry about the fact that I burgled your house. Basicly, it was your own fault anyways."

The teenager's letter was stopped by the authorities before it could reach the victims but was later released as part of an anti-burglary campaign.

Described as the 'most rigorous' form of non-custodial sentence for young offenders, writing letters to victims is part of the programme meant to enable them change their ways.

In the case of this teenaged burglar, surely, the letter-writing wasn't of much help.

Judge refuses to jail man for downloading child porn

Posted:

A judge in Britain provoked outrage for sparing a man who downloaded hundreds of child pornography pictures of a jail term, stating that such a punishment might only "make him worse"

Christopher Arno, 21, faced up to 18 months in prison after downloading over 800 images of child abuse. Among them were hundreds of photographs graded as the most serious, including images of rape, sadism and torture, the Daily Mail reported.

Judge Alistair McCreath, however, allowed the man to walk free, saying mixing with other perverts could make him a danger to the public.

"Right-thinking people are revolted at people looking at this material. Understandably they think people looking at it should go to prison," he said, adding "The difficulty is that the prison sentence I could pass on you would be really short and you would no doubt come out worse than when you went in."

The judge's comments evoked a furious backlash from child campaigners who said more severe sentences would deter offenders and reassure victims.

Giant boobs still 'small' for model with world's largest breast implants

Posted:

A US model, who had record-breaking 38KKK breasts before being compelled to have them removed following a life-threatening infection, underwent another breast implant operation in her quest to regain her former cup size but is still unsatisfied with her giant boobs

Shockingly, despite saying her new implants make her feel 'almost whole again', Sheyla Hershey is still not satisfied, insisting her massively inflated breasts are 'small', the Daily Mail reported.

The 31-year-old is determined to go bigger despite knowing further operations could prove fatal for her.

An infection that set in after her 30th breast enlargement operation led to 5ft 3in model from Houston, Texas undergoing emergency operation in June 2010 that left with an unattractive sagging skin where her implants had been.

Hershey was so obsessed with maintaining her Guinness World Record that the loss of her implants almost drove her to suicide.

"Not having my breasts was killing me, I didn't know if I could make it through 2012 without them," she said.

The 31-year-old, who secretly underwent the operation to prevent her concerned husband from finding out, said that she is elated with the results.

"It is a miracle. I never thought I would have my breasts back again."

"I almost feel whole again," she added.

Looking ahead to what promises to be a thrilling and open finale at Interlagos, Hamilton said: "Winning in Abu Dhabi last week was a fantastic feeling and it's made me even more determined to finish the 2011 season with a victory. It would be great to go into the winter off the back of another win, so that'll be my aim. Of course, for Jenson and myself, Interlagos is the circuit where we won our world championship titles so it will always hold some happy memories for us."

Female school teacher charged with rape, giving drugs to student

A female school teacher in New York has been charged with raping a 6th grade male student and plying him with drugs and alcohol

According to the police, Claudia Tillery from New York has been accused of rape, unlawful dealing of drugs and alcohol to a child, sexual misconduct, sexual abuse and acting in a manner injurious to a child.

Tillery, 42, was arrested by the 77th Precinct officials at her three-bedroom home on Rogers Ave., in Crown Heights, Brooklyn on Tuesday.

Tillery began teaching at Middle School 35, the Stephen Decatur School located at Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn since 1996 and earned 85,000 dollars a year.

The boy, now 14, who had been having a sexual relationship with Tillery for two years, decided to end it and come forward, sources claim.

"I just spoke to her last week [at parent teacher conference]," the New York Daily News quoted a parent Stanley Timo as saying.

"I'm shocked. She seemed very professional.

"This is a betrayal. It's hard to believe it. I'm glad she is out of the school," he added.

Department of Education spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said Tillery has been removed from the classroom pending the outcome of the criminal case and will be reassigned.

Raped woman given choice to spend 12 yrs in jail or marry her attacker

Posted:

Lack of adequate laws to protect the integrity of women in Afghanistan is once again been questioned after it emerged that a woman, who was raped by her cousin's husband and was jailed on charges of adultery, has been given an option to marry the man who attacked her honour and start a new life with him

Gulnaz was just 19-year old when she was convicted by a court for adultery and was sentenced to serve 12-years in prison, even though she tried to prevent the attack.

Now she is in Kabul's Badam Bagh Jail, serving out her sentence with her rapist's child.

Even two years later, Gulnaz remembers the smell and state of her rapist's clothes when he came into the house when her mother left for a brief visit to the hospital.

"He had filthy clothes on as he does metal and construction work. He closed doors and windows. I started screaming, but he shut me up by putting his hands on my mouth," she told CNN in an exclusive interview.

After the attack, she hid what happened as long as she could. But soon she began showing signs of morning sickness. After the incident was disclosed, Gulnaz was prosecuted, instead of being sympathized.

She was given the option that most women would consider nothing less than repulsive, starting a new life with the man who attacked her, the Daily Mail reports.

Surprisingly it something Gulnaz is willing to do, as she believes this second chance would help restore her honour and legitimize her infant daughter in the eyes of Afghanistan's conservative society.

"I was asked if I wanted to start a new life by getting released, by marrying this man," she said.

"My daughter is a little innocent child. Who knew I would have a child in this way. A lot of people told me that after your daughter's born give it to someone else, but my aunt told me to keep her as proof of my innocence," she added.

Gulnaz's choice is stark. Women in her situation are mostly killed for the shame their ordeal brings to the community.

Doh! Homer lived a million years ago

Posted:

It is the very modern catchphrase of Homer Simpson. But 'Doh!' or a version of it may have prehistoric origins.
Research suggests that 'Duh' would have been one of the first words spoken by humans.

It is thought the shape and mechanics of the mouth, throat and other parts of the vocal tract of our ancestors from one million years ago would have allowed them to speak -- but not a lot. The mouth, tongue and throat are mainly made of soft tissue and so there is little evidence of them in the fossil record. But there is one bone in the vocal tract -- the hyoid -- and Dr Bart de Boer, of the University of Amsterdam, began studying it.

In apes the hyoid attaches to a large pouch called an air sac, which shrank as modern man evolved meaning more complex words could be formed, reports New Scientist.

Dr de Boer, said it is likely that basic speech emerged around a million years ago, with 'Duh and Buh' both contenders for the first word.

Mayor says water is turning men gay

Posted:

A Peruvian mayor claims chemicals in the water being supplied from another town is turning the men in his town into homosexuals

There must be something in the water in one Peruvian town -- and the mayor says it's turning the men gay.
Mayor Jose Benitez has revealed that the metal strontium has got in the water supply and warned of its apparent side-effects.

Something's fishy: Jose Benitez, the mayor of Huarmey, claims that the
strontium will turn the men of his town gay

"Unfortunately strontium reduces male hormones and suddenly we'll all be like men in Tabalosos, where the percentages are increasing of homosexuality," he announced, Benitez issued his warning to the citizens of Huarmey during an opening ceremony for a local water project.

But while scientists warn that strontium, which is naturally occurring, can cause bone cancer, anemia and cardiovascular complications in very high doses no study has ever suggested it is linked to sexual behaviour. Benitez's accusation probably derives from a Peruvian television program several years ago that claimed the population of Tabalosos was predominantly gay.

Tabalosos, which is located in Peru's interior, is the source of water for Huarmey.

But the mayor of Tabalosos, Jorge Luis Vasquez said the myth had damaged the reputation of his city, adding, "Young people have low self-esteem by this stigma." He demanded that Benitez either prove his assertion or apologise for it.

Effects of strontium
When the uptake of strontium is very high, it may cause anaemia and oxygen shortages or blood clots. At extremely high concentrations it is even known to cause bone cancer as a result of damage to genetic materials in cells.

Prince Harry offers love advice to Pippa

Posted:

Prince Harry has reportedly been advising Pippa Middleton following her recent love split.

The brunette beauty and her boyfriend of 18 months Alex Loudon called time on their relationship earlier this month and although Harry is currently based in the US for Apache helicopter training, he is said to have called up Pippa to offer support.

A source said, "Harry and Pippa have always had a close relationship and when he heard about the break-up he told her he'd be a shoulder to cry on if she needed it."

Harry -- who broke up with his girlfriend Chelsy Davy -- is said to have told Pippa he understands what she is going through.

Pippa and Alex are said to have ended their relationship because his family didn't see her as "wife material".

Actress Sienna Miller tells inquiry that pursuit and abuse left her scared and paranoid

Actress Sienna Miller told a media ethics inquiry yesterday that she was left paranoid, anxious and scared by years of relentless tabloid pursuit that ranged from paparazzi outside her house to the hacking of her mobile phone.

Miller said the surveillance, and a stream of personal stories about her in the tabloid press, led her to accuse friends and family of leaking information to the media. In fact, her cell phone voice mails had been hacked by Rupert Murdoch's News of the World (NOTW).

'Paranoid'
Miller (29), said the scrutiny left her feeling "very violated and very paranoid and anxious, constantly."
"I felt like I was living in some sort of video game," Miller said.

Miller said the constant attention of photographers was "really terrifying."

"For a number of years I was relentlessly pursued by 10 to 15 men, almost daily," she said.

"I would often find myself, at the age of 21, at midnight, running down a dark street on my own with 10 men chasing me. And the fact they had cameras in their hands made that legal."

Take to court
Miller was one of the first celebrities to take NOTW to court over illegal eavesdropping. In May the newspaper agreed to pay her 100,000 pounds (Rs 80 lakh) to settle claim her phone had been hacked.

The newspaper's parent company now faces dozens of lawsuits from alleged hacking victims.

Miller said taking on Murdoch's media conglomerate had been a difficult decision.

"I was very nervous about taking on an empire that was richer and far more powerful than I will ever be," she said. "It was very daunting."

Murdoch closed down the NOTW in July after evidence emerged that it had illegally accessed the mobile phone voice mails of celebrities, politicians and crime victims.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling is due to give evidence about the effect of media intrusion on her life.
