According to reliable sources, the dog census conducted by the Humane Society International (HSI) - a rigorous exercise that took three months - revealed that there are an estimated 2 lakh to 2.5 lakh dogs in the 64 wards of Ahmedabad, spread over 466 square km area. Officials at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), however, refused to comment on this revealing statistic and said that they are yet to get a final figure from the HSI.

The court of judicial magistrate (first class) Umeshchandra More on Thursday sentenced Govind Ankush Sagar (32) and Jitendra Ramchandra Dhamale (22) of Swargate to three years of rigorous imprisonment for robbing a man of Rs160.The victim, Sunil Amarnath Jaiswal (28) of Swargate, filed a complaint against the duo on September 23 last year.On the day of incident, Jaiswal was proceeding towards the Swargate canal to take bath. The duo waylaid him and snatched his wallet containing Rs160 after beating him up.

5.4% hike in power tariff from December

Power consumers should be ready to pay more for their energy bills as the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (Merc) has allowed additional revenue of Rs1,136 crore to the Maharashtra Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) on its review petition over Merc's tariff order of September 12. The additional tariff would be effective from December 1. On September 12 Merc had allowed additional revenue of Rs909 crore for the power utility and hence there was modest tariff hike of 3%. Acting on MSEDCL's review petition Merc has now allowed additional income of Rs1,136 crore and consumers in various categories would now be required to pay more.

A 77-year-old widow, Hirabai Suryabhan Athere-Patil hailing from Kopargaon in neighbouring Ahmednagar district, has accused her elder son and his family of ill-treating her for greed of property. She alleged that Sunil, his wife Rajashree, and daughter Gayatri used to thrash her and issue threats to kill her.The widow owns a sprawling bungalow in Koregaon. Bangalore gang blackmailed victims with nude videos

The Bangalore police have arrested a gang of six, who targeted youth using a honey trap, only to blackmail them later. The accused have been identified as Radha Krishna Shenoy (30), M Rashid (28), Manikanta (29), Manoj (34), Rohith (24) and Sathish (31). Nine other members of the gang are yet to be traced. Police have seized three cars from the gang that were used for ferrying their eventual victims.

Bangalore man kills ex-employer to marry his wife

The Bangalore police have arrested a 21-year-old man and his friend for murdering the former's ex-employer, Tulsiraman. Preliminary investigations have revealed that Sunil Kumar had been eyeing Tulsiraman's wife Manjula for a long time, and killed his former boss when Manjula didn't reciprocate his feelings. The police have sent the duo to judicial custody.
