Windows Phone Store doubled in size this year

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 05:35 PM PST

Windows Phone has had a difficult time battling Android and iOS in the mobile space this year thanks to a glaring lack of apps. Unfortunately for Microsoft (MSFT), its Windows Phone Store falls short compared to Apple's (AAPL) App Store, Google's (GOOG) Play Store and even the Amazon Appstore. Microsoft is gaining ground, however, as the company revealed earlier this week that it published more than 75,000 new apps and games to its Windows Phone Store this year alone, more than doubling the catalog's size. To put that figure in perspective, Google and Apple boast more than 700,000 apps in their respective stores, and Research in Motion (RIMM) will look to start strong with more than 70,000 apps promised for the release of

Android vs. Android: LG looks to ban Samsung tablet in South Korea

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 04:50 PM PST

Are there any technology companies Samsung (005930) isn't fighting in court right now? LG Display (LPL), of which Android vendor LG Electronics (066570) owns a majority stake, confirmed on Friday that it has filed an injunction seeking to ban Galaxy Note 10.1 sales in South Korea. The panel maker claims the tablet infringes three of its patents relating to its display technologies and it is looking to ban sales of the device as a result. LG Display is also seeking damages of nearly $1 billion from Samsung affiliate Samsung Display if the Galaxy Note 10.1 remains on the market. "Through this action, LG Display seeks to completely stop the sale, manufacture, and importation of [the] infringing Samsung product," LG Display said

iPad mini met with ‘insatiable’ demand in China

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 04:05 PM PST

Despite a "soft" launch with few lines and seemingly abundant availability, China is going crazy for the iPad mini according Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White. His checks in China and Hong Kong reveal consumers are snapping up iPad minis at rapid rates, causing short supply, even with Apple (AAPL) opening two new retail stores in Hong Kong and three in China. White wrote in a research note on Friday that the iPad mini was sold-out at virtually all Apple Stores in both regions this week and is already more popular than the fourth-generation iPad thanks to the tablet's smaller size and lower price. Additionally, White's research shows iPhone 5 supply has improved to the point where anyone can walk into an

Loss of Apple’s processor business unlikely to affect Samsung

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 02:35 PM PST

Despite being estimated to pull in some $13 billion in revenue next year from its various parts deals with Apple (AAPL), the loss of the company's processor business is unlikely to affect Samsung (005930). The partners have become bitter rivals as competition between the two has increased over the past two years. After a number of legal complaints, Apple has reportedly begun to shift away from Samsung components, including processors, batteries and displays. A complete shift from the company's parts is estimated to take anywhere from 12 to 18 months, however Samsung is expected to see little or no adverse impact. Digitimes Research notes that the company is expected to "sustain its growth momentum" particularly due to the strong sales of

Apple agrees to drop patent claim against Samsung Galaxy S III mini

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 12:40 PM PST

Apple (AAPL) asked the United States District Court for the Northern District of California last month to add several recently released Samsung products such as the Galaxy S III mini to its ongoing patent infringement suit. Reuters now reports that the company has agreed to drop the mid-range smartphone from the suit, however, after Samsung (005930) said it is not going to be sold in U.S. market. Apple previously argued that it was able to purchase "multiple units" from online retailers such as Amazon (AMZN) and have them delivered in the U.S., but Samsung said it is not officially "making, using, selling, offering to sell or importing the Galaxy S III Mini in the United States." On those grounds, Apple agreed to

McAfee’s 2013 predictions: Mobile malware threats will grow, Anonymous will fade

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 12:05 PM PST

Security firm McAfee Labs released its annual Threat Predictions report this week, highlighting the potential malware, viruses and other security concerns we may see in 2013. The firm says that with the rise of more advanced mobile devices, smartphones and tablets will become an even larger focus for cybercriminals. This past year we saw a number of high-profile attacks from the hacktivist group Anonymous that had the National Security Agency on edge, however McAfee Labs believes the group will begin to decline due to "incoordination and competition" from more politically-motivated hackers. It has also been predicted that the threat of large-scale attacks such as Stuxnet, which is believed to have taken down Iran's computer infrastructure earlier this year, will increase as
