Apple CEO's pay takes big hit vs. record 2011 package Posted: 27 Dec 2012 02:44 PM PST NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc CEO Tim Cook's 2012 compensation package of $4.17 million is a huge cut on paper for the top executive of the most valuable U.S. corporation, after a 2011 package fattened by more than $376 million in long-term stock awards. Cook received the largest single pay package awarded to a company CEO in about a decade when he replaced Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in August last year, shortly before the Silicon Valley legend's death in October 2011. The maker of the iPhone and iPad made the 2012 compensation disclosures in a regulatory filing on Thursday. ... |
Analysis: For tech investors, it's hard to know when to bolt Posted: 27 Dec 2012 10:42 AM PST (Reuters) - When Hewlett-Packard Co agreed to buy British software company Autonomy in August last year for $11.1 billion, two well-known investors made diametrically different bets on how the big deal would play out. To short seller Jim Chanos, who had been raising red flags on Autonomy for years and had started shorting shares of HP in 2011, the deal was another nail in the coffin of the Silicon Valley tech giant, according to a source familiar with his thinking. ... |

Website helps Dutch Catholics "de-baptize" over gay marriage Posted: 27 Dec 2012 08:59 AM PST AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Thousands of Dutch Catholics are researching how they can leave the church in protest at its opposition to gay marriage, according to the creator of a website aimed at helping them find the information. Tom Roes, whose website allows people to download the documents needed to leave the church, said traffic on ontdopen.nl - "de-baptise.nl" - had soared from about 10 visits a day to more than 10,000 after Pope Benedict's latest denunciation of gay marriage this month. ... |

The number of e-readers aged 16 years and older jumped from 16 percent in 2011 to 23 percent this year, while print readers fell from 72 to 67 percent in 2012, in a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center. "The move toward e-book reading coincides with an increase in ownership of electronic book reading devices," the organization said. ... |
Pudding Monsters tops iPhone Games of the Week Posted: 27 Dec 2012 03:16 PM PST Now that the holiday season is behind us, we get to sit in that awkward bit of time at the end of the year. That time that is so utterly devoted to reminiscence and top games of the year lists. As such, it's hard to find out about notable new releases, and most developers avoid this time like the plague. Thankfully, last week was so utterly packed with releases that there's enough for a second list. I mean, there was a new game from ZeptoLabs, creators of Cut the Rope, and that wasn't even on last week's list. So here we go with the last, but certainly not least, new iOS games of 2012. |
Smartphones will replace keys on upcoming Hyundai cars Posted: 27 Dec 2012 07:45 PM PST NFC is becoming more prevalent in the mobile space. The technology has been featured in a number of smartphones and tablets from manufacturers such as Samsung (005930), Motorola, Nokia (NOK) and Research in Motion (RIMM), among others. The possibilities with NFC appear to be endless, from mobile payments and wireless sharing to one day even controlling our vehicles. South Korean automaker Hyundai (005380) recently announced plans to incorporate the technology into its vehicles in the next few years. The company's new Connectivity Concept will allow drivers to control various aspects of their car with an NFC-equipped smartphone. "Hyundai's Connectivity Concept showcases the brand's philosophy of making tomorrow's technology accessible to a wide range of customers," Allan Rushforth, SVP and COO of Hyundai Motor |
Samsung details Jelly Bean update with new features for original Galaxy Note Posted: 27 Dec 2012 06:50 PM PST The Galaxy S III isn't the only device getting new software features. Samsung (005930) confirmed on its website that the original Galaxy Note will be updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which should mean it'll run faster thanks to UI enhancements from "Project Butter." Samsung-specific features including multi-window view for true multitasking, pop-up apps, photo frame mode, enhanced S Note and Google Now will also be available in the "Premium Suite" update. Essentially, the Galaxy Note will gain many of the features already available in the Galaxy Note II. The company didn't provide any firm details on when the update will be released, but it should be any day now. |
Apple to reportedly move Mac mini production to U.S. Posted: 27 Dec 2012 05:55 PM PST Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook confirmed in a recent interview that the Cupertino, California-based company plans to invest $100 million in an effort to move the manufacturing of some of its products out of the Far East and into the United States. Cook noted that Apple would work with manufacturing partners in its effort, and now a new report from Digitimes suggests that Apple and OEM partner Foxconn will work to move Mac mini production lines back to the U.S. Mac mini shipments are expected to total 1.8 million units in 2013, up 30% from an estimated 1.4 million units in 2012, making this low-volume PC a perfect jumping-off point for Apple's U.S. manufacturing efforts. Earlier speculation suggested the Mac Pro would |
Lumia smartphones see deep discounts from Verizon, T-Mobile and Amazon Posted: 27 Dec 2012 05:00 PM PST Nokia's (NOK) Lumia line of smartphones is now seeing post-holiday discounts at a variety of retailers shortly after launching in the United States. The phones, which run Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows Phone 8 operating system, are the company's latest gamble after a string of launches that were not well received. Verizon's (VZ) Lumia 822 can now be had for free with a new two-year agreement, as can T-Mobile's Lumia 810, while Amazon (AMZN) is offering the flagship Lumia 920 for $39 on AT&T (T). It is unclear if the carriers are footing the entire financial burden, or if Nokia has provided some support. A Nokia spokesperson said in a statement to The Wall Street Journal that "pricing is always a carrier |
Working conditions begin to improve at Apple partner’s factories Posted: 27 Dec 2012 04:05 PM PST It has been nearly a year since Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook addressed the unsafe working conditions in the company's supply chain factories. Following an investigation from the Fair Labor Association that found a number of Chinese labor law violations, Apple and Foxconn (2038) agreed to improve conditions. The companies planned a series of reforms, including reduced hours and significantly higher wages. Foxconn said that the majority of changes would go into effect by July 2013, however according to a report from The New York Times, some workers have already noticed some smaller changes taking place such as cushioned chairs replacing old wooden stools. Apple has continued to work with advocacy groups over the past year as it carries on |
Marvell has options as it faces $1 billion patent verdict Posted: 27 Dec 2012 03:56 PM PST NEW YORK (Reuters) - As Marvell Technology Group Ltd embarks on a legal process to void a $1.17 billion damages verdict in a patent dispute with Carnegie Mellon University, it has some reasons to be optimistic. The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by a jury in Pittsburgh, which found that Marvell had infringed two patents owned by Carnegie Mellon related to how accurately hard-drive circuits read data from high-speed magnetic disks. On Thursday, Marvell said that it would seek to overturn the verdict through post-trial motions at the district court. ... |
750,000 Android apps invade OS X thanks to BlueStacks App Player Posted: 27 Dec 2012 03:10 PM PST Earlier this year, BlueStacks App Player made headlines by allowing Android apps run on Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows 8 platform. The company announced on Thursday its App Player is now available in beta form for free on Mac, giving OS X users access to 750,000 Android apps normally reserved for smartphones and tablets. BlueStacks uses patent-pending virtualization software called "Layercake" to allow Android apps to run on other platforms. It works virtually the same as running Windows within OS X using software such as Parallels or VMWare. The Windows 8 version of BlueStacks has been out since March and has been installed on more than 5 million PCs, which is a good sign that people want to run mobile apps on their computers. |

"The update will be available for download over the air beginning Dec. 27." |

How to fix incorrect song matches in Google Music Posted: 27 Dec 2012 01:15 PM PST Good news: there's a workaround to fix the issues related to the bug where Google Music's music-matching service replaced explicit versions of songs with clean ones. Droid-Life reports that users who are seeing the issue should do click on the arrow next to each song or album title. Then select "Fix incorrect match" from the drop down menu. That should then upload the correct version of the song from your library into the Google (GOOG) cloud and replace the wrong one. Google's music-matching service launched on December 18th in the U.S. as a free alternative to Apple's (AAPL) $25 iTunes Match service and Amazon's (AMZN) $25 Cloud Player. |
iOS apps see Christmas sales spike shrink in 2012 Posted: 27 Dec 2012 12:40 PM PST Distimo just released its statistics on Christmas Day app downloads and revenue growth… and the download spike is far smaller than it was last year. Back in 2011, Christmas Day iOS app download volume spiked 230% above the December average. This year, the increase was just 87% — far below industry expectations. The revenue spike came in at 70%. Interestingly, iPad downloads increased by 140% this Christmas, implying that the iPhone download bounce was really modest. A few weeks ago, AppAnnie released statistics showing that iOS app revenue growth had stalled over the summer of 2012, whereas Android app revenue growth was relatively strong at 48% over a five month period. Both Distimo and Appannie are respected companies and their analytics |

According to analytics firm Flurry, 17.4 million Android and iOS devices were activated during the holiday, an increase of 332% compared to an average of 4 million activations per day. This year's numbers were found to be more than two and a half times larger than Christmas Day last year, which saw 6.8 million devices activated. Once their smartphones and tablets were turned on, consumers collectively downloaded 328 million applications. Interestingly, Flurry found that for the first time ever, more tablets (51% of all activations) were activated on Christmas than smartphones (49% of all activations). The big winners were said to be Apple's |

Meanwhile, Amazon (AMZN) maintained its spot at the top with a score of 88/100. Forsee's survey based the scores on "appeal of merchandise, website functionality, and the quality of website content." The survey's full findings are available below. |
The Trouble with Adam Lanza's DNA Posted: 27 Dec 2012 11:12 AM PST In a rare and now controversial investigation, scientists have been asked by Connecticut's medical examiner to study Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza's DNA — but the DNA community doesn't think that's such a good idea. Though details on the research are scant, University of Connecticut geneticists will apparently be looking for biological clues that might explain Lanza's extreme violent behavior. The New York Times's Gina Kolata reports that this undertaking is thought to be the first time scientists have studied the genome of a mass killer. ... |
RIM’s patent payoff to Nokia revealed in filing Posted: 27 Dec 2012 10:55 AM PST Research In Motion (RIMM) and Nokia (NOK) announced last week that the companies had settled their differences and agreed to end all unresolved patent disputes. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it was believed that RIM would pay a hefty up-front free in addition to ongoing royalty payments in order to license various Nokia patents covering mobile WLAN technologies and more. In a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission uncovered by The Guardian, however, some light has been shed on those terms. "On December 21, 2012, Nokia and RIM announced that they have entered into a new patent license agreement," RIM noted in a 6-K filing with the SEC. "The agreement will result in the settlement |
Toshiba’s new Lytro-like mobile image sensor could revolutionize smartphone photography Posted: 27 Dec 2012 10:20 AM PST Cramming more megapixels into a smartphone with the thickness of a pencil is not the future of mobile picture-taking. Smartphones have hit a threshold where 8-megapixels is more than enough for taking crisp still shots and 1080p HD video. Many smartphones even perform decent under low-light conditions. But according to the Asahi Shimbun, Toshiba (TOSBF) has a new camera module that could change the way we take photos on smartphones anda tablets, forever. Toshiba is reportedly shopping around an image sensor with Lytro-like capabilities, where the point of focus can be adjusted after the picture has been taken. To boil it down: the camera takes 500,000 small images, each with a different area in focus, and then combines them into a large photo where |

Apple still said to account for 87% of North American tablet traffic as Kindle Fire, Nexus 7 gain Posted: 27 Dec 2012 09:10 AM PST Apple's (AAPL) share of the global tablet market is in decline now that low-cost Android slates are proliferating, but the iPad still appears to be the most used tablet by a huge margin. Ad firm Chitika regularly monitors tablet traffic in the United States and Canada and in its latest report, Apple's iPad was responsible for almost 90% of all tablet traffic across the company's massive network. Using a sample of tens of millions of impressions served to tablets between December 8th and December 14th this year, Chitika determined that various iPad models collectively accounted for 87% of tablet traffic in North America. That figure is down a point from the prior month but still represents a commanding lead in |

Instagram gains users in December despite recent uproar as Zynga gets pecked to death by rivals Posted: 27 Dec 2012 08:35 AM PST Zynga (ZNGA), the Facebook (FB) app behemoth, still reigns supreme on its most important platform. But the erosion of its dominant position continues as smaller rivals keep chipping away at its market share. On December 26, Zynga-owned Facebook applications had 267 million Monthly Active Users, down 20 million in two weeks. Far behind it followed Microsoft (MSFT) with 70 million MAU, King.com with 65 million MAU and Instagram with 43 million MAU. But whereas Zynga lost nearly 7% of its Monthly Active Users in the two-week run-up to Christmas, Microsoft managed to inch up by 700,000 users, King.com by 600,000 users and Instagram by 2.1 million users. Of course, the Facebook crackdown on aggressive customer acquisition techniques has limited the growth of all |

Why Apple's First American-Made Mac Minis Wouldn't Create Jobs Posted: 27 Dec 2012 07:45 AM PST If the latest rumors are true, Apple's made-in-America shift will be an extremely experimental, low-cost operation — and if you look at the supply chain, that may point to more of a symbolic gesture than a genuine engine of job creation. The whispers, which have increasingly better sourcing, now say the tech giant will move its Mac Mini production line from China's Foxconn to the the U.S., possibly near California or Tennessee, per the rumor site DigiTimes. ... |

Cute effort, right? More like misguided, argues Jonathan Cohn. Samsung looks to address its biggest weakness in 2013 Posted: 27 Dec 2012 07:15 AM PST Samsung (005930) is a force to be reckoned with. Two short years ago it looked like Apple (AAPL) was set to run away with the smartphone industry, but Samsung came out in a big way and the companies now share the smartphone crown — Samsung handily out-ships Apple but the Cupertino, California-based company still pulls in more profit. There is one area where Apple reigns supreme, however, but Samsung may look to launch new attacks next year in an effort to extend its range in important secondary revenue channels. Samsung raked in $6 billion in profit last quarter thanks in large part to huge smartphone numbers. The company also does well in several other areas of its business, but one key |
Lack of low-end BlackBerry 10 phone could be a serious stumbling block in RIM comeback bid Posted: 27 Dec 2012 06:30 AM PST South Africa is one of Research In Motion's (RIMM) top five markets in the world, and it is a decent proxy for the entire African market. Leading regional carrier Vodacom's November smartphone statistics illustrate exactly why BlackBerry 10 cannot arrive soon enough… and why RIM badly needs a cheap new BlackBerry 10 model by spring. Vodacom holds more than 50% of the South African handset market and South Africa is the largest mobile phone market in the continent. On November 12th, Vodacom announced that it had 2.7 million BlackBerry users on its South African network, a number that increased by 300,000 in three months. The number of Android users grew by 200,000 to 700,000 subscribers. The number of iPhone users |
