Kim to be World Bank president Posted: US President Barack Obama nominated Korean-American physician-anthropologist Jim Yong Kim for president of the World Bank, a post that has typically been awarded to a US establishment figure. Obama declared his choice of candidate shortly before he left on a visit to South Korea for the nuclear security summit, where he will meet India's PM Dr Manmohan Singh. Born in South Korea, Kim grew up in Iowa, and is currently President of Dartmouth College. He the first Asian-American to head an Ivy League school and comes with a background of being the former director of the Department of HIV/AIDS at the WHO. Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, and Pepsico CEO Indra Nooyi were also in the race. |
