| After petrol price hike, Mamata warns her party may quit, will talk to PM Posted: 04 Nov 2011 08:26 AM PDT Mamata Banerjee has warned the Congress that if it doesn't withdraw the petrol price hike introduced last night, she may have to opt out of the government. After meeting with senior MPs from her party in Kolkata this afternoon, Ms Banerjee said her party had not been consulted about the hike, and that her MPs are willing to quit the UPA if they are excluded from decisions like this one which affect the common man. "There is no way our MPs can defend this to our people," she said. |

| Without BJP support, Anna would have faced Ramdev-like action: Gadkari Posted: 04 Nov 2011 07:18 AM PDT Anna Hazare may have tried to distance himself from the BJP, but party president Nitin Gadkari has said that if the party had not supported Anna Hazare, the Gandhian and his movement may have run into the sort of disaster confronted by yoga icon Baba Ramdev and his supporters. "We don't go anywhere uninvited," said Mr Gadkari, "but we will continue to support Anna because he is a good man and he has a good cause." Mr Gadkari also said that he is not upset with Anna's comments against his party, and its parent organization, the RSS. |
| Marathon Boy: Documentary on Budhia Singh Posted: 04 Nov 2011 06:57 AM PDT Gemma Atwal's documentary Marathon Boy, a film-festival favorite that will be shown on HBO on Thursday night, is a wrenching experience largely because it uses the moods and methods of true crime and pulp fiction to tell a story that is nominally about poverty, politics and the toxic mingling of celebrity culture and national pride in modern India. |

Yesterday, a court in Bangalore granted him conditional bail in one of the two cases that have landed him in jail. But he cannot leave prison till he gets bail in both cases. The order on the second case will be out today. |
| Anna in Delhi, may end his vow of silence Posted: 03 Nov 2011 07:07 PM PDT Anna Hazare, who has not spoken a word in about three weeks, is expected to end his vow of silence on Friday. | Kanimozhi denied bail, breaks down in court Posted: 03 Nov 2011 12:11 PM PDT Before Kanimozhi entered court this morning, she seemed relaxed and cheerful, as she sat with her mother, husband and young son. The odds were in favour of her getting bail after more than five months in prison for her alleged role in the telecom scam. The CBI, which had contested three earlier bail applications for her, had said a few weeks ago that this time around, it has no objections to her leaving prison. The Supreme Court, which had refused her bail in June, had advised her to try again after charges were framed against her - which happened on October 22. And a section of the Indian law (437 of the Criminal Procedure Code) suggests bail be considered for women, under-16s, and sick people - a clause that her lawyers had invoked. |
