Assange loses appeal against extradition to Sweden Posted: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has lost an appeal in a court in Britain against extradition to Sweden where he faces rape charges Assange, 40, had appealed in the high court against a European arrest warrant issued by Swedish prosecutors after rape and sexual assault accusations were made by two Swedish women following his visit to Stockholm in August 2010. It now means that he could be removed to Sweden within 10 days, guardian.co.uk reported. Assange has 14 days to seek leave to appeal to the Supreme Court. The WikiLeaks founder has been practically under house arrest in Norfolk since December 2010. He has to sign in at a police station every day, wear an electronic tag and has to be back inside the house by 10 p.m. each night. Woman drugged, held prisoner by family after secret love marriage Posted: A 23-year-old Asian woman was drugged and held captive by her family in Britain after she broke off her arranged engagement to her first cousin and secretly married another man Angry relatives also threatened to be kill, assault and abuse Naila Afsar after they discovered she had wed Afsar Saddiq without telling them, the Daily Mail reports. The Burnley Crown Court heard that Afsar's family gave her a milky drink laced with a sedative in a bid to put her to sleep while they took her back to the family home, and away from her new husband. Prosecutor Jonathan Dickinson said Afsar''s family wanted her to marry her first cousin, who lived in Denmark. Naila became engaged to him in May 2009, but later she realised they were not suited for one another and in July 2009, called it off. "Her family was upset with her and that was, perhaps, putting it mildly. ''The complainant ran away from the family home and went to live with a friend in Newcastle, thinking the defendants could not reach her," Dickinson said. Afsar''s mother Shamim Akhtar, 58, father Mohammed Khan, 57, her elder brother Shamrez Khan, 34, all from Bradford, West Yorkshire, and her sister Saima Mahmood, 30, and her brother-in-law Zahid Mahmood, 36, both of Accrington, are facing a string of charges. They all have denied false imprisonment, kidnap and two charges of administering the drug Lorazepam with intent, in January last year. They earlier claimed in a police interview that they were trying to help Naila 'resolve a domestic situation'. |
92-year-old woman denied booze for failing to produce age proof Posted: A shop refused to sell a 92-year-old great-grandmother a bottle of whisky because she was unable to show an ID to prove that she was over 18. Diane Taylor produced her over 60s bus pass, an OAP card and even her pacemaker certificate, but was still refrained from getting a bottle from her local One Stop Shop in Harlow, Essex, because she could not provide a passport or driving licence. It was the first time that the pensioner, who was born in 1919, has ever been asked to show ID while buying alcohol. She said it demonstrated a "ridiculous" and "offensive" lack of common sense. "I asked the girl behind the counter to repeat herself three times, I just couldn't believe what I was hearing, I thought it was a joke," the Daily mail quoted her as saying. "I can understand shops being strict with all the youngsters buying booze but surely there's a difference between a 92-year-old and someone of 18. "I ended up storming out in indignation. It is just ridiculous to ask someone of my age to prove they are an adult, I find it offensive. "I have never been asked for ID before in my life but then I turned 18 in 1937," she added. Taylor was on her my home from a doctor's check-up, and wanted to buy a bottle of whisky for her son from the store. |

German model fired for praising Gaddafis Posted: A German company has cancelled a major advertising contract with an Italian-American model after she described her passionate relationship with Moammer Gaddafi's son Mutassim and praised his family. Telecommunications firm Telefonica Germany will stop working with 23-year-old model Vanessa Hessler and remove her face from its website within hours, said spokesman Albert Fetsch. losing face and fee: German model Vanessa Hessler has been relieved of her duties as the face of a communications firm over her love affair with Gaddafi's son Mutassim. File pic/getty images "Vanessa Hessler has failed to distance herself from her comments on the conflict in Libya," Fetsch said. Hessler told the Italian magazine Diva e Donna that for four years she had been dating Mutassim Gaddafi -- who was killed in Libya alongside his father this month. "I didn't have any contact with him since the uprising broke out, but our relationship was one of passion," she was quoted as saying. "The Gaddafi family is not as they are being depicted, they are normal people." She also said that she was crying for Libya, adding that the rebels are "people who don't know what they're doing." Talks between Telefonica and Hessler's agency did not yield a solution because Hessler stood by her comments, said Fetsch. "We and our clients have no comprehension for what she said." |
Day of reckoning for Wikileaks founder Posted: The fate of the whistleblowing site hangs in the balance, as Julian Assange awaits the judge's verdict on his extradition on charges of sexual assault WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange faces a day of reckoning today when the High Court in London delivers a ruling on whether he will be extradited to Sweden to face questioning over rape allegations. The 40-year-old Australian, whose whistleblowing website has enraged governments around the world, has been fighting a bitter legal battle ever since he was arrested in London last December on a European arrest warrant. What happens next? Julian Assange's fate remains shaky as he awaits the decision of whether he will be extradited to Sweden on charges of sexual assault. File pic/getty images The High Court will announce whether it will uphold a ruling in February by a lower court that Assange should be sent to face questioning by Swedish authorities over claims of sexual assault against two women. Holed up The WikiLeaks boss has been living under strict bail conditions at the mansion of a supporter in England, including having to wear an electronic ankle tag and observe a strict dusk-to-dawn curfew. The decision, which has been deferred since the High Court heard Assange's appeal in July, is not necessarily the final chapter in the saga. Depending on the verdict, either Assange or the Swedish authorities can theoretically take the case a step further to the Supreme Court in London, the highest legal authority in the land. Assange denies the allegations and claims they are politically motivated. His legal team, led by top human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce, was not available for comment ahead of the ruling. Assange shot to fame when WikiLeaks released thousands of classified files. But Assange also achieved a different kind of notoriety when the allegations of sexual assault were made against him by two Swedish women in August 2010. And as Julian Assange awaits a judge's extradition verdict, it could be WikiLeaks' very future that's at stake. Its finances under pressure and some of its biggest revelations already public, WikiLeaks may not have the strength to survive if Britain's High Court judge decides today in favour of a Swedish request to extradite Assange to face trial over rape allegations, some experts argue. Tim Maurer, who has studied the group and its membership, said he wasn't sure whether its remaining staff had the tech savvy to run the site if its founder is absent. "I don't think that WikiLeaks will exist without Assange," said Maurer. WikiLeaks close to shut down WikiLeaks may be weeks away from collapse, said Assange. WikiLeaks' inability to overturn the block on donations imposed by American companies may prove its undoing. "If WikiLeaks does not find a way to remove this blockade we will simply not be able to continue by the turn of the new year," Assange said. 338 The number of days Julian Assange has been under house arrest |
Ferrari chief says PM Berlusconi must resign Posted: The chairman of Ferrari -- one of Italy's most prominent businessmen -- has urged Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to resign so that the country can deal with its debt crisis. Luca Cordero di Montezemolo said Italy had reached "the point of no return". He called for a "government of national salvation", in an open letter to the daily La Repubblica. Put the brakes: Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, the Ferrari chief, said that if Italian PM Berlusconi continued to put his own ambitions before the good of the country, then his political journey would end in the worst way possible. File pic/getty images Berlusconi is under pressure to speed up austerity measures amid feeble growth and a huge public debt. He used to enjoy strong support among Italian business leaders but a growing number have begun calling for his resignation. His image has been tarnished by sex scandals and a string of court cases. Montezemolo said that "if Berlusconi continues to put his ambitions before the good of Italy" his political journey would "end in the worst way". "There is not a minute to lose. Italians' savings, social cohesion and Italy's continued membership of the euro are at risk," he said. Italy's public debt stands at 1.8 trillion euros, equal to 120 per cent of GDP. At last week's eurozone summit EU leaders urged Berlusconi to fulfil his pledges on new austerity measures and reforms. Berlusconi's popularity dips Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's popularity fell to the lowest since he took office, according to a poll. Confidence in Berlusconi fell two percentage points to 22 percent from a survey last month. |
US girls joined at chest to be separated Posted: In many ways, Angelina and Angelica Sabuco are like many other two-year-olds. The twin sisters love dancing and drawing. But unlike most siblings, they can't get away from each other -- they were born attached at the chest and abdomen. Yesterday, a team of doctors and nurses at Stanford University's Lucile Packard Children's Hospital are planning a 13-hour procedure to give "silent Inah" and "talkative Icah" their independence. Joined at the hip: Conjoined twins Angelica and Angelina Sabuco with their mother Ginady and child life specialist Allison Brooks. The twins will undergo a 13-hour procedure to separate themselves from each other. Pic/afp "We want them to live normally," said Ginady Sabuco, the girls' mother. "When they argue, they can be alone. When they play, they can play together or apart. When they don't want to see each other, they won't have to." Dr Gary Hartman, the lead surgeon on the girls' case, said keeping the girls joined carries bigger risks for their health. If one conjoined twin dies, the other will die within hours. Muscular and skeletal deformities can also worsen with time. Hartman, who has done five separation procedures at medical centers around the country, was upbeat about the girls' prospects. "Our expectation would be that we will have two healthy girls at the end of the operation," he said. Angelica and Angelina are classified as thoraco-omphalopagus -- joined at the chest and abdomen. |
Posted: US President's official doctor says he is physically healthy and tobacco free Forget the rumours that he has been sneaking cigarettes. US President Barack Obama is "tobacco free", the President's doctor said. He was reporting the results of the President's second physical examination since he took office. In a two-page report, Dr Jeffrey Kuhlman gave the president a strong bill of health. He said Obama was a physically active 50-year-old who ate a healthy diet, stays at a healthy weight and "on occasion drinks alcohol" in moderation. "The President is in excellent health and fit for duty," Dr Kuhlman said. In addition, Dr Kuhlman praised Obama -- an avid golfer and basketball player -- as "fit at 50" and "staying healthy at 50-plus". He said Obama was on all age-appropriate screening tests. Obama had the physical examination at the White House last week. According to the report, the President has a "well-healed lower lip laceration" that apparently refers to an injury during a basketball game in November last year, when he was inadvertently hit by the elbow of Rey Decerega, director of programs for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. Dr Kuhlman also reported that Obama had been having periodic physical therapy to help him deal with recurrent back problems. And, the doctor reported, Obama has had benign skin tags removed from his neck. |
