Facebook generation 'loneliest among all age groups' Posted: Believe it or not, Britain's 'Facebook generation' - the 16 to 24-year-olds - are the loneliest than any other age group, a survey has revealed. In the survey, one in three said that they were bored with their lives compared to just eight per cent of pensioners and 28 per cent complained loneliness was making them unhappy and so they are taking to drinking. More than a quarter of the Facebook generation revealed they turned to alcohol for comfort, and half admitted to using junk food as an emotional crutch, found the poll into national happiness levels, conducted for 'BBC Radio 3'. Asked what made them unhappy, 70 per cent of the 16 to 24 year-olds said finances topped their list of concerns. More than a third were worried about holding down a job, compared to a quarter of middle-aged respondents. One in three said they were tormented by family or relationship problems, and they were also the age group that were most likely to struggle over their social status. Overall money was the biggest cause of unhappiness across all age groups, above work, relationships and loneliness. But while older age groups shared the Facebook generation's finance fears, they were more fulfilled in other areas of their lives. Almost a third of youngest generation reported they had relationship problems which dropped to eight per cent among 55 to 64-year-olds, the 'Daily Mail' reported. And one in three of the Facebook generation said they wanted to move abroad in search of happiness. Behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings said: "There's nothing wrong with social networking, but if it's used instead of face-to-face meetings or phone calls than it can be very isolating. Real friendships are made through bonds and shared experiences and bonds. Some social networking 'friends' are barely even acquaintances." |
Actor mistaken for gunman, shot dead Posted: An actor starring in a British movie was shot dead while filming in the Philippines after being mistaken for a gunman by a watchman, it was reported here. Kirk Abella, a 32-year-old Filipino actor, was playing the role of an armed masked man. He had a toy gun and was told by the director to speed away on the back of a motorbike when he was fatally shot. He died in hospital, Daily Express reported on Tuesday. British director Alan Lyddiard was shooting the movie 'Going Somewhere' in Cebu city. Watchman Eddie Cuizon thought the actor was a real gunman, police said. Cuizon told police that he was asleep when he was woken up by a worried local who said there were armed men in the neighbourhood. He went to investigate and spotted two masked men on a motorcycle. He approached them but they didn't stop and instead sped away. Cuizon shot the pillion rider after the latter pulled out a gun, which turned out to be made of plastic. Alexis Relado, a police official, said that Cuizon will be charged with homicide and breaching a gun ban. |

Frenchman who 'heard Diana's dying words' exposed as a common thief Posted: A Frenchman who allegedly heard Princess Diana''s dying words and gave evidence in court as a key witness has been exposed as a career criminal. He also claimed that he have heard paparazzi accusing each other of causing the accident - allegations which eventually saw a London jury partially attribute blame for the crash on the photographers. However, Redjil's entire story is being questioned when his long career as a criminal was exposed. He was given a five year suspended sentence with two years suspended in September for stealing two Picasso paintings worth 45 million pounds from the home of Diana Widmaier-Picasso, the artist's granddaughter. He then escaped and, while on the run, stole thousands of pounds from cash machines all over Paris Redjil was finally re-arrested on while trying to break open an ATM in the suburb of Colombes and is also thought to have masterminded a 30,000 pounds heist at an Axa bank. 'It was during questioning that his part in the Diana saga came to light. He gave evidence, which has been reported as fact for years, but nobody knew anything about his life as a criminal. Redjil is a break-in expert who can enter a secure building without leaving any trace at all. He's also brilliant at opening locks,' the Daily Mail quoted a police source in Paris. Diana's death led to numerous conspiracy theories, before exhaustive British and French investigations concluded that Paul's drunk driving was the main reason for the crash. Redjil's claims about Diana were always largely accepted as true, although there was no tangible evidence to back them up, and they will now be viewed with some scepticism. |
Berlusconi an embarrassment to Italy, says former deputy Posted: Silvio Berlusconi's alleged intervention to free a teenage belly dancer from police custody is an embarrassment to Italy that should force his resignation, according to former deputy. Gianfranco Fini, the leader of the lower house of parliament and an ally turned dissident within Berlusconi''s ruling coalition, said the billionaire premier''s link with 17- year- old Moroccan model Karima Keyek had harmed Italy. Berlusconi, 74, has been reported to have personally telephoned a police station in Milan in May to order officers to free Keyek, also known by her stage name as Ruby, from custody. The aspiring model, which is believed to be an illegal immigrant in Italy, had been arrested on suspicion of stealing 3,000 euro and valuables from an acquaintance. "This story has gone around the world and has embarrassed Italy," the Telegraph quoted Fini, the co-founder of the governing People of Freedom party, as saying. Berlusconi would be guilty of "the private use of his public powers" if it was confirmed, as claimed by police officers, that he had falsely told them that Keyek was the grand-daughter of the Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, and that they should release her into the care of one of his political appointees, former model and showgirl Nicole Minetti. "It would show a certain immoral behaviour," Fini, who is widely seen as a potential successor to Berlusconi. "If it is true, it would be time for him to step down." Walter Veltroni, a former leader of the main opposition Democratic Party, said Berlusconi should resign and allow the formation of a government of national unity. Berlusconi, who was engulfed in sex scandals last year involving a call-girl and a teenage underwear model, has admitted helping Keyek when she was in trouble but denies interfering with the justice system. His allies have described the allegations against him as a "media beat-up". "Berlusconi must resign," said Antonio Di Pietro, the leader of the Italy of Values party and a former anti-corruption investigator. "If he does not want to do it for Italians, he should do it for himself," the Di Pietro added. (ANI) |
Josef Fritzl still 'loves' daughter he raped for 24 years Posted: Josef Fritzl, the man who raped his daughter Elisabeth for 24 years, says he still ''loves'' his victim. The 75-year-old blurted out the word just once about Elisabeth before changing the subject to talk about his fantasies of starting life anew with his ex-wife, reports the Daily Mail. The man shocked reporters from Germany's top selling Bild newspaper as 18 months into a life sentence has done nothing to make him see the enormity of his crimes. Bild described Fritzl's voice in the eight-metre square visitor room that is reached by seven locked doors as ''strong, no longer quiet and fragile as it was at his trial.'' Fritzl fathered seven children by Elisabeth one of whom died shortly after birth. He burnt the body in an oven. |
Oz man first to be convicted in 'sexting' case involving nude teen girl Posted: An Australian man has landed in the centre of the country's first 'sexting' case after a 13-year-old schoolgirl sent a nude photo of herself to his mobile phone. Damien 'Ezzy' Eades, 20, from Sydney''s western suburbs, now faces a maximum penalty of two-years jail term. In March 2008, Eades, then 18, was working at a KFC outlet when he exchanged text messages with a 13-year-old girl with whom he had become friends. In the text he had sent her, he wrote: 'When am I going to get a picture. I send you one if you send me one a hot steamy one,' the Sydney Morning Herald reported. The girl replied: 'OK well when I get home I take one Hey did you get the one I sent the other day.' She then sent a full frontal photograph of herself naked which she had taken holding her mobile in her hand. When the girl's father checked her mobile phone, he went to the police. Eades was charged with incitement of a person under 16 to commit an act of indecency towards him. He was also charged with possession of child pornography. But when the matter came before Magistrate Daniel Reiss at Penrith Local Court in March last year, the magistrate dismissed both charges. Reiss said that the photo itself was not indecent and that he was not able to take into account the background context of the text messages, which he noted did suggest 'a sexual aspect behind his request'. The magistrate also said there was no evidence that the relationship ever progressed beyond friendship. The Director of Public Prosecutions appealed over the 'act of indecency' charge, the penalty for which is up to two years in jail. Justice Greg James of the Supreme Court ruled that the magistrate had erred and should have taken into account the sexual nature of the text messages, Eades's intention, as well as the age difference between him and the girl. Justice James referred the matter back to the Local Court to be heard again. Eades's legal team appealed, but last month the NSW Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal and ordered him to pay costs. |
Posted: Going one better than his idol Harry Houdini, Winnipeg escape artist Dean Gunnarson clawed his way out of the earth after two days buried alive in the Manitoba city. "Happy Halloween, Harry," said Gunnarson, dirty and staggering after being helped from his "grave." "Nothing is impossible if you truly believe." He told the crowd that had gathered to watch the stunt that he didn't know how much energy he'd have after more than 40 hours without food or water. He said it was cold and damp and he could hear the regular rumbling of the trains that went by on tracks only about 180 metres away. Friday evening, Gunnarson was locked into chains, bound and then placed inside a steel coffin. The coffin was then locked and wrapped in more chains. It was buried almost two metres under the earth in the parking lot in south Winnipeg. Visitors got the chance to speak with Gunnarson via a pipe. Gunnarson timed his escape to be as close as possible to the exact moment that Houdini died in 1926 1:26 pm But he said this was a stunt Houdini never tried. |
Muslim group says no to Pam's money Posted: Actress Pamela Anderson has frequently grabbed media attention for her charity work, usually promoting the animal rights group PETA. This time, the buxom actress is making the headlines for her latest charity contribution one that's caused controversy in Indonesia. Anderson posed naked for the January issue of Playboy and gave the $25,000 ( Rs 11 lakh) payment to disaster relief organisation Waves 4 Water to help Indonesian disaster victims. The nonprofit organisation brings water filters to communities struggling to recover from natural disasters. Anderson said, "I've also donated personally. I wish I could do more. Indonesia, Haiti and Pakistan are all in need of these filters. Spread the word!" However, in the predominately Muslim nation of Indonesia, Anderson's naked photos have caused a stir as an indecent way to raise charity dollars. A hardline conservative Muslim group known as the Islamic Defenders Front has publicly denounced Anderson's donation. The Islamic Defenders Front yesterday said that the donation to the charity would be "against the law of God" because it was obtained through immoral acts." |

He then went on to speak about his wife, Rosemary, who divorced him following his conviction on charges of rape, slavery, imprisonment and negligent homicide. Alcohol more lethal than heroin: Experts Posted: Alcohol is a more dangerous drug than both crack and heroin when the combined harms to the user and to others are assessed, British scientists said yesterday. Presenting a new scale of drug harm that rates the damage to users themselves and to society, the scientists rated alcohol the most harmful overall and almost three times as harmful as cocaine or tobacco. According to the scale, devised by a group of scientists, heroin and crack cocaine rank as the second and third most harmful drugs. Ecstasy is only an eighth as harmful as alcohol, according to the scientists' analysis. Professor David Nutt, chairman of Britain's Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs , whose work was published in the Lancet medical journal, said the findings showed that "aggressively targeting alcohol harms is a valid and necessary public health strategy". He said they also showed that current drug classification systems had little relation to the evidence of harm. Alcohol and tobacco are legal for adults in Britain and many other countries, while drugs such as ecstasy and cannabis and LSD are often illegal. The World Health Organisation estimates that risks linked to alcohol cause 2.5 million deaths a year from heart and liver disease, road accidents, suicides and cancer accounting for 3.8 percent of all deaths. It is the third leading risk factor for premature death and disabilities worldwide. Drugs were scored out of 100, with 100 given to the most harmful drug and zero indicating no harm at all.
