The world's first robot with conscience

Posted:

Spain has designed the world's first robot with its own 'conscience' and 'life', which will 'entertain, teach and be a companion' to humans who purchase it.

The AISoy 1, which will go on sale in August, is the first social android developed by Spanish firm AISoy Robotics, which is now bringing its creation out of the laboratory.

"It almost seems like science fiction, but it's a reality," said Diego Garcia, one of the 'fathers' of the robot and head of AISoy's product engineering and development division.

AISoy 1 was conceived to entertain and provide company to the user, but its main objective is "to live," just like any other being that "senses, has emotions and makes decisions".

At 25 cm in height and weighing 1.5 kg, the robot "is almost a living being. It has the same activity as a living being, it has its own autonomy and conscience", he said.

It also has a series of "basic needs, like nourishment and security, and other more advanced ones, like love, recognition, freedom and, above all, enjoying itself and getting along well".

In contrast to the available robots developed till date, its makeup does not consist of "a collection of limited actions or programmed responses. It's dynamic, it has its own life and, at times, it's unpredictable," said AISoy 1's designer.

The robot is capable of learning from experience and modifying "its behaviour, values and actions it can undertake at specific times," he said.

"If you take two AISoy 1s and leave them in two different families, within two months they will be totally different because they will have had different experiences," said Garcia.

Starting August, any family will be able to buy the robot, which is in the final phases of production, and it will be sold via the AISoy 1 website.

Although the price of the domestic robot has not yet been made public, the firm says that it will be 'less costly' than alternative prototypes developed by other firms.

Man caught with 10,000 pounds in underwear

Around 10,000 pounds in cash was found hidden in the underwear of an Italian man who was caught as he was about to fly out from the Belfast international airport in Ireland on Friday.

UK Border Agency (UKBA) officials found large denomination pound and euro notes when they searched the man when he was about to board a flight to Rome, the BBC reported.

The man was unable to give an explanation for carrying the cash.

The money would be returned if the man could provide proof to a court that it came from a legitimate source, Maggie Eyden, UKBA assistant director for Northern Ireland, adding that the man later chose not to travel on the flight.

Chelsea Clinton's future father-in-law 'a convicted fraudster'

Posted:

Chelsea Clinton's future father-in-law is a convicted fraudster, it has emerged.

Ed Mezvinsky - whose son Marc is set to marry Clinton - served five years in jail over a 9-million-dollar scam in which a judge described his actions as a 'one-man crime wave', Britain's Daily Mail reported.

The former Congressman has since expressed remorse for his actions, which included him taking his own mother-in-law's money by funding Nigerian-style Internet scams.

Mezinsky, 73, eventually lost everything and still owes millions of dollars in compensation to his victims - several of whom will be at the wedding, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

But the revelations are doing little to dampen the excitement about the marriage, with the event capturing the attention of the US.

Parrot fights off burglars

Crime-fighting parrot saves owner from house robbery by frightening intruders with his squawk

Thieves who prised open the front door of a house in London's Docklands were shocked to be met by the owner's pet bird.

Flee the scene
The parrot, named Kuzya, let out a piercing screech that could be heard streets away, prompting the robbers to turn on their heels and flee. Gennadi Kurkul, 42, the bird's owner, said that his neighbours were full of praise for the noisy green Lory parrot. He said, "They reached in through a window and managed to open the door and get in. But they must have disturbed Kuzya. He let out a massive scream. You could hear it all over the Docklands."

All the burglars managed to seize during their 4 am raid was Kurkul's wallet, which had been left close to the window.

Fantastic
Kurkul, a Russian interpreter, added that the parrot was a fantastic pet who follows him around the house like a dog.

He said, "I don't keep him in a cage. He just finds a spot at night where he likes to sleep and settles down there sometimes under the stairs."

Commenting on Kuzya's heroic act, he said, "He must have heard their footsteps and just started screaming."
Tower Hamlets police, who have been investigating the break-in, are already understood to have made an arrest.

Keep safe
A police spokesman said, "It's important for people to keep their doors and windows secure, especially during this hot weather." He added, "Check everything before going to bed and try not to leave windows open in rooms you're not using."
