Senate overhauls farm bill, but time running out Posted: 21 Jun 2012 02:47 PM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate approved sweeping new U.S. farm legislation on Thursday that would cut almost all traditional farm subsidies while expanding a costly crop insurance program, but odds are slim the bill will pass this year. Passed by an 2-1 margin, the Senate's $498 billion five-year farm bill would compensate growers when revenue from a crop falls, rather than prop up prices. The bill saves at least $23 billion by cutting crop subsidies, conservation funding and food stamps for the poor. Crop subsidies provide the bulk of the savings. "This is about reform. ...
Justice Department sues towns, cites religious bias in housing Posted: 21 Jun 2012 02:39 PM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department sued two towns on the Utah-Arizona border on Thursday that are home to a polygamist Mormon sect, citing religious discrimination in housing and other areas against residents who are not members of the sect. The lawsuit against the twin cities of Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale, Utah, said that the towns and their joint police department and utility providers had allowed the sect to unduly influence the provision of public services, including policing. ...

Egyptians fret about turmoil amid political setbacks Posted: 21 Jun 2012 02:38 PM PDT CAIRO (Reuters) - Public frustration has deepened in Egypt after ruling generals acted to retain sweeping powers over the nation, yet a bigger worry for many exhausted Egyptians is that a new political crisis raises the prospect of fresh turmoil on their streets. A troubled transition beset by political bickering and often bloodshed has worn down a country that was euphoric when Hosni Mubarak bowed to the will of the people who turned out in their millions in towns and cities to demand he end his 30-year rule. ...
Egypt ex-general Shafik says sure of election win Posted: 21 Jun 2012 02:38 PM PDT CAIRO (Reuters) - Former Egyptian general Ahmed Shafik said on Friday he was confident of victory in last weekend's presidential election, stepping up a war of words with his Islamist opponent as Egypt waits anxiously for the delayed result. Mohamed Morsy, candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood, declared victory early on Monday, within hours of polls closing. Shafik aides disputed that during the week, though the candidate himself kept a low profile. One spokesman for him said on Wednesday that exit polling showed the run-off vote was "too close to call". ...
Monti needs EU success to win Italians back Posted: 21 Jun 2012 02:31 PM PDT ROME (Reuters) - As his popularity continues its steady slide, Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti's political future hinges on his ability to counter Germany's focus on budget austerity as a way out of the euro crisis. Though hugely popular when he came to office in November, his approval rating has halved as tax hikes and pension cuts exacerbated an already severe recession, and his labor reform estranged both unions and the business establishment. ...
Euro zone consumer confidence stabilizes in June Posted: 21 Jun 2012 02:31 PM PDT BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Euro zone consumer confidence stabilized in June, after an increase in May, European Commission figures released on Thursday showed. The European Commission said a flash estimate showed euro zone consumer morale was -19.6 in June, little changed from -19.3 in May. In the wider 27-member European Union, consumer sentiment was also roughly stable, at -19.5 from -19.4 in May. Consumer spending makes up more than half of euro zone economic output, but households have been squeezed by wage cuts, government spending freezes and record joblessness. ...

The unusual combination is driven by the fast-approaching expiration of existing laws and the desire to continue programs generally regarded as successful by lawmakers. ... |

The group's Leading Economic Index rose 0.3 percent to 95.8 after slipping 0.1 percent in April, and beating economists' expectations for a 0.1 percent gain. However, gains in the index last month were capped by a slight shortening of the average workweek in manufacturing, an ebb in consumer confidence and weak stock market prices.
