Activists say Syrian troops fire on Damascus funeral, killing 30 Posted: 30 Jun 2012 01:11 PM PDT BEIRUT (Reuters) - Opposition activists said Syrian forces killed more than 30 people on Saturday when they fired a mortar bomb into a funeral procession for a man who died in shelling a day before. They said amateur video footage, posted on a website, showed the moment the explosion hit the crowd. Another video showed the aftermath - grey smoke filling the air before clearing to show bodies lying on the road. The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the death toll was likely to rise due to the number of casualties. (Reporting by Oliver Holmes; editing by Andrew Roche) |

Surge in violence spurs new fears in Iraq Posted: 30 Jun 2012 01:07 PM PDT A half year after the U.S. military left Iraq, dire predictions seem to be coming true: The country is mired in violence and the government is on the verge of collapsing. With no relief in sight, there's growing talk of Iraq as a failed state as al-Qaida's local wing staged near daily attacks that killed at least 234 people in June. |

Storms leave 3.9 million without power in eastern U.S. Posted: 30 Jun 2012 01:02 PM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - About 3.9 million homes and businesses were without power on Saturday amid a record heat wave in the eastern United States after deadly thunderstorms downed power lines from Indiana to New Jersey. Statewide emergencies were declared in Washington D.C., Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia because of damage from overnight storms, which brought hurricane-force winds along a 500-mile stretch. At least nine people were killed. Forecasters predicted more severe thunderstorms partnered with renewed heat on Saturday. Restoring power in some areas could take up to a week. ... |

Tables turn as Egypt's Islamist president sworn in Posted: 30 Jun 2012 12:00 PM PDT CAIRO (Reuters) - In a day full of memorable images, none on Saturday was more powerful than that of Egypt's first Islamist president, Mohamed Mursi, flanked by generals at a military parade where he was formally handed authority to govern the nation. For six decades, Mursi's seat had been filled by presidents drawn from the ranks of the military. And for half that time, it was occupied by one man, Hosni Mubarak, a former air force chief who hounded and jailed members of Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood. ... |
Russia's Lavrov delighted at Syria meeting outcome Posted: 30 Jun 2012 11:57 AM PDT GENEVA (Reuters) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said he was "delighted" at the outcome of crisis talks on Syria held in Geneva on Saturday and that the document agreed on did not imply Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should step down. Lavrov told a news conference there were no preconditions to Syria's transition process and no attempt to exclude any group from a proposed national unity government. The key point was that the agreement did not attempt to impose a process on Syria, he said. (Reporting by Tom Miles; Editing by Angus MacSwan) |

Peace envoy Kofi Annan said after talks in Geneva that the government should include members of Assad's administration and the Syrian opposition to pave the way for free elections. He said a "strong transformational wind" was blowing and could not be resisted for long. He said the new government would be formed by discussion, negotiation and mutual consent, and the "Action Group" on Syria that met in Geneva on Saturday would reconvene as necessary.
