Illegal immigrants can be deported in UK if they have pet cats!

Posted:

UK Justice Secretary Ken Clarke has jumped to defend the nation's Human Rights laws after Home Secretary Theresa May claimed that they were responsible for blocking the deportation of an illegal immigrant because he had a pet cat

During a Conservative party conference Clarke went out of his way to pick a fight with May who said that a Bolivian immigrant escaped deportation on the grounds that he had a pet cat.

"Bolivian immigrant cannot be deported because - and I am not making this up - he had a pet cat," she said.

Clarke accused May of 'misrepresenting' human rights law, the Daily Mail reports.

"They are British cases and British judges she is complaining about. I cannot believe anybody has ever had deportation refused on the basis of owning a cat," he said.

"I'll have a small bet with her that nobody has ever been refused deportation on the grounds of the ownership as a cat," he added.

According to the paper, while the cat was not the main reason for the decision not to deport the man, the pet was explicitly mentioned by the immigration judge.

"The evidence concerning the joint acquisition of Maya (the cat) by the appellant and his partner reinforces my conclusion on the strength and quality of [their] family life," the judge said.

While the Home Office appealed against the decision and lost, the fact remains that, in the original verdict, a court allowed a migrant to stay partly because of his ownership of a cat, the paper said.

May's claims were, however, refuted by the Judicial Office who said the ruling in the case had nothing to do with the cat.

The Home Secretary had recently called for the Human Rights Act to be scrapped saying that it hinders the government's attempts to deport dangerous foreign criminals.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs passes away

Apple co-founder and former-CEO Steve Jobs died Wednesday surrounded by his family. He was 56.

Jobs had been struggling with cancer since 2003. He underwent a successful surgery in 2004 and a liver transplantation in 2008.

"Steve died peacefully today surrounded by his family. We are grateful for the support and kindness of those who share our feelings for Steve. We know many of you will mourn with us, and we ask that you respect our privacy during our time of grief," Xinhua quoted Jobs' family as saying in a statement.

Apple's website Thursday changed to "Steve Jobs: 1955-2011," along with the most iconic picture in which the scraggly bearded charismatic visionary posed with one hand up to his chin.

"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being," RIA Novosti reported the company in a statement. "Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."

Apple Board of Directors also said that "Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."

Steve Jobs was one of the greatest examples of success in the history of American business. He dropped out of college after one year, and never received a degree in technology. This future Apple CEO earned his living by collecting empty bottles before he started working at a company that produced video games.

Jobs and Stephen Wozniak founded Apple Computer in 1976. He is credited with being the mastermind of the company's iconic products - iPhone and iPad.

This August, the legendary chief executive officer of Apple Inc., resigned and had named Cook to the post.

Jobs had taken a medical leave of absence earlier this year, the third in his battle with pancreatic cancer that began in 2004.

On Aug 24, Jobs stepped down as Apple CEO, saying: "I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come."

Doh! The Simpsons to be cancelled?

Posted:

The Simpsons, the cult US cartoon series, is facing the axe after the actors who work on the show refused to accept a major pay cut.

The animated series has been a fixture of the schedules since 1989 and is in its 23rd season, making it one of the biggest success stories in television history and a cash cow for Fox Television.

However, a contract dispute threatens to bring the show to an end.

Executives at the network have reportedly said that the show will close down in the spring unless cast members take a 45 per cent pay cut.

The actors each earn an estimated $8 million per year. Their proposal for a 30 per cent cut in exchange for a percentage of the show's profits from global syndication and merchandising has been turned down by Fox.

A show insider said, "Fox is taking the position that unless they can cut the production costs really drastically, they'll pull the plug on new shows.

The show has made billions in profits over the years and will continue to do so as far as the eye can see down the road. The actors are willing to take a pay cut of roughly a third, but that's not good enough for Fox."

20th Century Fox TV said, "23 seasons in, The Simpsons is as vibrant as ever and beloved by millions around the world.

We believe this series can and should continue, but we cannot produce future seasons under its current financial model.

We are hopeful that we can reach an agreement with the voice cast that allows The Simpsons to go on entertaining audiences with original episodes for many years to come."
