US couple charged for holding woman as sex slave Posted: A couple in the US state of Missouri has been facing trial for keeping a young women as sex slave and torturing her for up to seven years. But in the case of sado-masochism, Marilyn Bagley, who was told she will not be charged if she testifies against her husband Ed, is refusing to take the stand because she believes the couple did nothing wrong. US Attorney Beth Phillips, announcing charges last month, called the case one of "the most horrific ever prosecuted in this district", British newspaper Daily Mail reported Monday. Authorities said the woman, who has not been identified, was a mentally deficient runaway who was recruited by Ed Bagley, 43, at the age of 16 to live in his trailer. The case came to light in early 2009, after the woman, then 23, landed in a hospital following a torture session. She had apparently been locked in a cage and subjected to electrical shocks, an indictment said. Bagley faces 11 charges, including conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion, and forced labour trafficking. The indictment describes medieval-like sexual devices being used on the woman at Bagley's mobile home. Accusations of waterboarding, suffocation and beatings are mentioned throughout, the British daily said. However, Bagley's wife, Marilyn, said she and her husband knew the girl because she had dated their son. That relationship had ended, Bagley's wife said, but the girl wanted to come live with the couple when relations with her adoptive parents soured. She said the girl moved in when she was 17, not 16, and never had sex with her husband until after she turned 18. "She was not a runaway," Marilyn Bagley said. "We picked her up from her adopted dad and stepmom. They were right there and everything." Prosecutors said Ed Bagley posted videos and other images on the internet showing the young woman engaged in sexual activities. Ed allegedly described her as his sex slave and advertised that she would perform sex acts and submit to torture for other people during encounters online or in person. He is also accused of taking cash, cigarettes, computer hard drives and even meat, to let other men come to his home and torture her. Bagley and other defendants are also charged with transporting the woman to California in 2006 and 2007 for prostitution. Prosecutors said Ed Bagley also forced the girl to work as an exotic dancer and threatened to punish her if she was not a top earner at the clubs where she stripped. But another dancer at the same Missouri strip club said the woman seemed to enjoy the attention she got when she danced. Susan Dill, Bagley's Kansas City-based attorney, told reporters recently that the indictment tells only one side of the story. She said the defence will present evidence that the woman practiced BDSM - bondage, dominance, sadism and masochism - by choice. |
'Your car could wake you up if you fall asleep at wheel' Posted: Imagine your car waking you up when you fall asleep behind the wheel. It may sound too good to be true, but scientists claim to have developed an eye tracking device which keeps drowsy drivers alert. A team at the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology in Ilmenau, Germany, has developed such a device that has built-in sensors which sound an alarm the moment they detect the driver's eyelids have closed. Called the Eyetracker, the device costs one-tenth the price of similar devices, according to Fraunhofer developer Peter Husar. "With conventional systems, every person whose line of vision is to be monitored has to complete more or less time-consuming preparations. Because every head, every face, every pair of eyes is different. "What we have developed is a small modular system with its own hardware and programmes on board, so that the line of vision is computed directly within the camera itself. "Since the Eyetracker is fitted with at least two cameras that record images stereoscopically, the system can easily identify the spatial position of the pupil and the line of vision," Husar was quoted by the German media as saying. In fact, the information is fed out to the device via a standard interface. And, the Eyetracker can be connected directly to the car's trip computer. The device's in-built cameras evaluate 200 images per second to identify the line of vision of the driver, even when one moves one's head to the left or right. |
Renting an apartment in world's tallest tower to cost less Posted: All those who aspire to experience living in Burj Khalifa have a reason to smile, as renting an apartment in the world's tallest tower will now cost less, say Dubai property dealers. A studio apartment of around 560 square feet can now be rented at USD 24,502 a year, compared to USD 38,114.4 in the beginning of June this year. Asking price of a one-bedroom apartment is USD 32,669.51 while two bedrooms could be rented for USD 59,894.1 a year, say local advertisements. Earlier, a one-bedroom unit ranged between USD 49,004.2 and USD 70,783.93 while two-bedroom apartment started at USD 81,673.7. Reports last week said that apartments in Dubai's most prestigious address are available at 40 per cent less rentals than when the building opened 10 months ago. According to a local property brokerage firm, about 825 of the 900 apartments in the Burj Khalifa are still empty. Emaar had sold 90 per cent of the homes in the tower before the January opening. The building also has 144 Armani-branded residences, 37 floors of office space and 160 hotel rooms. It houses Armani's first hotel and an observation deck on the 124th floor. Sales prices in the Burj Khalifa are down to around USD 816.73 per square foot, as opposed to the earlier peak of up to USD 2,722.4 per square foot. According to September data, the Sales Price Index Dubai-All Residential fell 2.30 per cent from the previous month. |
PETA 'might face lawsuit over naked models ad' Posted: PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals - is in a row with UK film-maker Victor Schonfeld who has alleged that the organization used his film footage without consent. Peta has been threatened with a lawsuit in the UK by Schonfeld, a film-maker credited with raising public awareness of animal exploitation with the critically acclaimed The Animals Film, first released in 1982 and shown on Channel 4 in its launch week. Schonfeld has previously criticized Peta''s "sexualised" campaigns to promote animal awareness - including a current poster featuring one-time Baywatch star Pamela Anderson. The director claims secretly shot footage used in his film, co-directed by Myriam Alaux, has been lifted by Peta without consent. Had Peta asked for permission, it is unlikely Schonfeld would have granted it. "Our client would have been very reluctant to grant a licence to your client, Peta Inc, given Mr Schonfeld''s well publicised views about Peta and its sexualised efforts to attract publicity," The Guardian quoted a legal letter to the organisation on behalf of Schonfeld. "In the circumstances, had it been prepared to grant a licence, it would have charged a substantial premium," it read. Apparently, Schonfeld, who's London company Beyond the Frame is the rights holder, wants 470,000 pounds for the footage. Peta has retorted saying, "The lawsuit claims are egregious and we have always been willing to compensate filmmakers fairly, but this filmmaker seems to have an axe to grind." Peta has been under fire earlier for its use of naked women in its campaigns. Its famous "State of the Union Undress" campaign featured a woman talking about animal cruelty while disrobing and its "I''d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" campaign was illustrated with several high-profile women in the nude. |
Robert Mugabe''s wife 'had a fling with his top banker for 5 yrs' Posted: Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's wife has been having an affair with one of her husband''s best friends, it has emerged. Grace Mugabe, who is 41 years younger than the 86-year-old president, has spent the past five years cuckolding him with Gideon Gono, head of the country''s central bank, reports the Daily Mail. The couple would meet as often as three times a month either at her dairy farm or in expensive hotels in neighbouring South Africa. Mugabe found out about the affair in July when his sister Sabina revealed the scandal on her deathbed. However, it is not the first time Mrs Mugabe, who is widely reviled inside Zimbabwe for her lavish tastes and expensive shopping sprees, has conducted affairs behind her husband''s back. One former lover, Peter Pamire, died in a mysterious car accident. Another, James Makamba, fled the country. Gono, who has known Mrs Mugabe for 15 years, is a pillar of the Zanu PF party that has held on to power in Zimbabwe since its 1980 independence from Britain. A senior official in Gono''s office told South Africa''s the Sunday Times, "Mugabe trusted Gono. He even thought our boss was taking care of the first lady, keeping a protective eye on her so that she could not again be adulterous." |
Now, airport scanner can reveal what's in your bottles Posted: Carrying your own drinks on board planes would be possible once again-thanks to a new airport scanner developed by British scientists that can differentiate between water and liquid explosives. Manufacturers have been given an official EU approval to use the new generation of X-ray machines at all European airports. The machines could be in place by April and would end the confusion surrounding liquid bans that add to delays for millions of British holidaymakers. The ban on liquids in hand luggage was imposed in August 2006 after police uncovered a plot to destroy at least seven planes using chemicals hidden in soft drinks bottles. Kromek, a spin-off company from Durham University, has created the new scanner. "The best analogy is that compared to conventional X-ray scanners, this is the difference between seeing an object in black and white and seeing it in colour," the Daily Mail quoted Arnab Basu of Kromek, as saying. "You just put a bottle in the scanner and it will show whether it is water or a chemical explosive," he added. The company''s scanners can also read the barcode on a bottle of liquid in a suitcase and then check to see whether the contents have been tampered with by referring to a vast database of different drinks. Sex-case question prompts WikiLeaks boss to walk out of interview Posted: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange reportedly walked out of an interview when asked about his personal life. Australian-born Assange walked out on a CNN interview after the reporter asked him about his often-terse relationship with fellow workers - and an even more serious personal court case in which he was cleared of sex abuse charges in Sweden. The 39-year-old ended the interview with CNN''s Atika Shubert after she brought up the issue of the charges brought against him - who himself publicised the charges as a ''dirty tricks campaign'' by the U.S. government. "I''m going to walk if you''re going to contaminate this extremely serious interview with questions about my personal life," the Daily Mail quoted Assange as saying. When pressed on the issue, he said, "It''s completely disgusting, Atika. I''m going to walk if you''re going to contaminate us revealing the deaths of 104,000 people with attacks against my person." Then Shubert said, ''I''m not. What I''m asking is if you that this is an attack on WikiLeaks." That is when Assange removed his microphone and walked out. "I''m going to walk if you''re going to contaminate this extremely serious interview with questions about my personal life." Assange had started to get uncomfortable earlier in the interview when Shubert suggested that former staff had quit due to internal squabbling - and his personality ''eclipsing'' the work of the organisation. Shubert said, "This criticism that the story around you is eclipsing the work of WikiLeaks... would you consider stepping aside." He said, "We always expect tremendous criticism. It is my role to be the lightning rod to attract the attacks against the organisation. That is a difficult role, but on the other hand I also get undue credit." When Shubert then brought up the issue of the Swedish charges, Assange cut her off and said "I am not going to talk about that''n - and then repeatedly warned ''I''m going to walk" before actually doing so. As he left Shubert was heard to say: ''I had to ask that question.'' |
Brit minister says kids must see women's rights film full of F-words Posted: Children should be allowed to see a film that contains 17 uses of the F-word as it has vital things to say about women's rights, says a Brit minister. Lynne Featherstone, the equalities minister, called on the British Board of Film Classification to lower the rating for 'Made in Dagenham' from a 15-certificate to a 12A. The film is the story of female machinists at the Ford car plant who went on strike in 1968 in protest at being paid less than their male colleagues. Their efforts paved the way for the Equal Pay Act. "I''ve seen Made In Dagenham and, while I''m not a fan of bad language, it strikes me that the use of the f-word is completely in context," the Telegraph quoted Featherstone as telling the Sunday Times. "I also think it''s really important that young people see this film to understand the fight for rights which went on then and how some of these battles are still being fought. "It''s really important for youngsters to see this social history," she said. The Liberal Democrat minister made the comments in the wake of a row over the 15-certificate for ''The King''s Speech,'' a period drama in which King George VI played by Colin Firth, utters the f-word during treatment to cure his stammer. The filmmakers complained about the rating and the BBFC duly lowered it to a 12A. Stephen Woolley, producer of ''Made in Dagenham,'' said it was a clear case of double standards. "This decision is obviously about kings and queens being allowed to swear, but workers should know their place," he said. However, the BBFC said the classification would stand. The film is already on general release and the swearing is "a different case altogether" from ''The King''s Speech.'' A spokesman said: "Although the word is uttered, it only occurs in two scenes in ''The King''s Speech,'' whereas with ''Made in Dagenham'' it is spread over the film. Generally the uses occur as part of heated exchanges between characters." |
Did aliens create Drumstick - the four-legged chick? Posted: A man was travelling through the Northern Territory's top alien hotspot when his chicken hatched - and it was four legged. According to the Northern Territory News, owner Kevin Horner said it may have just been a coincidence the chicken with two extra legs was born as he was passing through Wycliffe Well, 1100km south of Darwin, last Wednesday, He has dubbed the chirpy little brown chicken "Drumstick" on account of her unexplained extra limbs. "I have never seen or heard of a four-legged chicken," the Herald Sun quoted him as saying. "I''ve bred about 100,000 chickens over the years. I''ve never seen anything like this. "The first thing I saw was it sitting in there and thought it was sitting on a dead chicken. "I just saw these other extra little feet. "I think it formed from a double yolk egg, I don''t think it''s all that uncommon, but I''ve never seen it before," he said. Horner, 59, of Noonamah said not everyone believed him when he first revealed his bizarre new pet. "I said it to my wife and she said, ''what have you been drinking''," he said. "I told a few people down at the pub about her and they said I must have done some good drugs," he added. Drumstick is reportedly not facing any segregation from the other chickens. And the chicken will be spared from becoming a meal and will instead be a prized pet. |
A female Dalai Lama will be more attractive: Dalai Lama Posted: The Dalai Lama, who wound up his three-day visit here by leading prayers at the newly opened Tibetan cultural centre, doesn't rule out a female successor. "If a female reincarnation is more useful - why not?" he retorted when asked if the next Dalai Lama could be a female. In his typical jovial style, he explained the two advantages of having a female Dalai Lama. The first advantage, he said, is that females are "biologically more sensitive about others' pain'' than males. The other advantage of having a female Dalai Lama is that she would be a lot more attractive than him, he said amid peels of laugher. Giving an assessment of himself, the 75-year-old pontiff joked, "I am certainly not the best Dalai Lama of the 14, and certainly not the worst. But I am a popular Dalai Lama.'' Speaking on "Human Approaches to Peace,'' the Dalai Lama said amid laughter that peace will not "drop from the sky. We should create some visions (on) how to build a healthy world.'' He said peace can be ushered in only through dialogue. But unfortunately in the century gone by, he said, governments resorted to violence to settle differences. Referring to his own plight at the hands of the Chinese, he said, "At 16, I lost my freedom, at the age of 24 I lost my own country. Now, at 75, what I learned is the power of talk. In the spirit of dialogue, you can't have one side that is defeated and one side win. Open your hearts; consider others.'' The Dalai Lama also opened the local Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre where about 5,000 people, mostly Tibetans, prayed for his long life and sought his blessings Sunday. The Dalai Lama is an honorary citizen of Canada where about 5,000 Tibetans live. |
World's first 3D sex film attracts tourists Posted: A movie claiming to be the world's first 3D sex film is attracting Chinese tour groups to Hong Kong, a news report said on Monday. Six travel agents have already sought advance bookings for Chinese tourists to see the movie, '3D Sex And Zen', which opens in 2011, according to the South China Morning Post. Producers of the $3 million movie say it is already generating a buzz in mainland China where sex scenes and nudity are routinely censored. Producer Stephen Shiu told the newspaper he had already been approached by six travel agents who wanted to arrange private screenings and "meet and greet" sessions with cast members. Half of the box office takings for the sexually explicit 2007 Ang Lee film 'Lust, Caution' were accounted for by tourists from China where the film was heavily censored, Shiu said. "Hong Kong is a much freer society in terms of entertainment and publishing, so this is definitely an attraction for mainland (Chinese) tourists," lawmaker Paul Tse said. More than half of the 30 million visitors to Hong Kong in 2009 came from mainland China which has substantially eased cross-border travel restrictions in recent years. |
Tony Blair's sister-n-law declares 'she's a Muslim' Posted: First former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair became a Roman Catholic after leaving office in 2007, and now his sister in law has converted to Islam. Lauren Booth, Cherie Blair's half sister, decided to adopt her new faith after what she described as a holy experience in Iran. She now covers her head with a hijab when she leaves home, has given up alcohol and visits a mosque "when she can". "I sat down and felt this shot of spiritual morphine, just absolute bliss and joy," The Daily Mail quoted Booth as saying. "I always felt that the ummah [Muslim community] is a very loving, peaceful place and I am proud to be a member of it," she said. Booth has given up pork; she reads the Koran every day and has not ruled out wearing a burka in the future. "The strange thing is that since I decided to convert I haven't wanted to touch alcohol, and I was someone who craved a glass of wine or two at the end of a day," Booth said. She announced her conversion at the Global Peace and Unity Event in London on Saturday. To cheers, she said, "What I wanted to share with you today is that I am Lauren Booth and I am a Muslim." Booth's conversion follows a turbulent time in her personal life, during which her marriage to actor Craig Darby hit the rocks. She described publicly how she had fallen on hard times and was being forced to return to Britain after six years in rural France with her family. Her conversion was welcomed on Muslim Internet forums. One post read, "Now a war criminal has an innocent sister in law! God bless her!" |
Israel restricts schools' construction in Gaza Posted: Israel has restricted the construction of new schools in the Gaza Strip, a UN official said Sunday. The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) planned to build eight schools in the enclave, but Israel refused to allow construction materials for four schools into Gaza, Adnan Abu Hassna, the UNRWA's spokesman, told Xinhua. It was reported Friday that Hamas authorities had provided the UNRWA with land to build the schools near military installations for the Islamic movement. However, Abu Hassna said the schools would be located in populated areas. Israel relaxed Gaza blockade following international outcry against its raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla in May which killed nine activists. |
'Pakistan racing to become No.1 corrupt country' Posted: Corruption in Pakistan has attained new heights in 2010, as the country, under the administration of Zardari-Gilani duo, is said to have surpassed several other badly corrupt nations ranked above it in 2009. A serious charge sheet of corruption against Pakistan is all set to be released by the Transparency International on October 26, The News reported. Sources in the World Bank (WB) and Asian Development Bank (ADB), which contribute to the preparation of the Transparency International report, revealed that corruption in Pakistan had massively increased during the last 12 months. "You will soon be hearing really bad news about Pakistan," warned a source, disclosing that as against the last year when the nation had slipped five ranks from the 47th most corrupt country in 2008 to 42nd, the 2010 scenario was much worse. They said Pakistan's downslide amongst the most corrupt nations was deeply depressing. "It seems the country (Pakistan) is fast racing to become number one on the list of the most corrupt nations," a source opined. According to sources, while Pakistan stood at 29th position among 75 countries in the WB International Development Association (IDA) Ranking Resources Allocation Index in 2009, it has slipped by five countries this year and reached 24th out of 77 countries. The ADB Composite Country Performance Rating (CCPR) had 12.79 score for Pakistan last year but this also came down to 12.20 in 2010, they added. In an American survey released on October 14, 2010, Pakistan had been declared the worst country on the criteria of corruption and access to civil justice. Pakistan Steel Mills, EOBI, PIA, Rental Power Plants, KESC, NIC, NHA, OGDC, PSO, Pepco, CDA, DP Division, DHAs, Pakistan Steel Mills, TCP, NBP and many other organisations are said to be facing serious corruption. |

The event initiated by the Chinese ministry of culture and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations featured more than 60 performances in 48 cities across China, Xinhua reported. The Festival of India started April 7 in Beijing, while a China festival kicked off in India April 21 as part of the bilateral celebrations. The festival helped Chinese people to understand India better, said S. Jaishankar, Indian ambassador to China, adding that India-China ties could become one of the world's major economic relationships in the future. |
New version of 'Kama Sutra' a guide for modern life Posted: No more descriptions of adventurous lovemaking. A new version of "Kama Sutra", the ancient Indian book known as the ultimate sex manual, will now be updated as a text-only "lifestyle guide for the modern man and woman". Instead of the erotic drawings and sexual illustrations that have accompanied various translations of the ancient Hindu text, the new edition, to be published by Penguin, will be a text-only pocket-sized handbook, described as a "classy" manual "covering every aspect of love and relationships", The Daily Telegraph reported. The new version, written by A.N.D. Haksar, an Indian scholar and a leading translator of Sanskrit texts, will include chapters with headings such as "Making a Pass", "Why Women Get Turned Off", "Girls to Avoid", "Is he Worthwhile?", "Getting rid of him", "Easy Women", "Moves towards sex," and "Some Do's and Don'ts". Haksar was quoted as saying: "The common perception of the 'Kama Sutra' is that it is only about sex, but any honest reading of the book shows that it is about lifestyle and social relations between human beings. "My effort with the new translation has been to stay as close as possible to the original text but to present it in a contemporary language which reflects the contemporary issues within the book." The book is originally believed to have been written in the third century by Indian sage Vatsyayana, as a guide for the courtly gentleman of the time. "Kama" means "the desire for sensual pleasure", but in contrast to popular theory, only one of the Kama Sutra's seven "books" is dedicated purely to sex. The second and longest book outlines tips on how to enhance sexual pleasure and provides detailed descriptions of intricate sexual positions. The six other sections deal with social etiquette and good-living, courtship, marriage, extramarital relations, mistresses and courtesans and advice on how to enhance one's physical attractiveness. The book also includes relationship advice for women, such as avoiding men who talk too much or who have "breath which smells of crows". The book also encourages women to seek out either a "fatalist wanting to spend his money fast" or a man "with a steady income" who is "as strong as a bull in sex", "full of life and not addicted to drinking" and "who flirts with them but is not in their control". Alexis Kirschbaum, the editorial director at Penguin, said the new version of the book, to be published in February, would be "less pornographic, and more a lifestyle guide for the urbane and modern gentleman and woman". "This is the most accurate, authentic version to date. Until now, the 'Kama Sutra' has always been presented as a scandalous, 1960s hippie-influenced pornographic sex book. But it was originally written as advice to a courtly gentleman on how to live a well-rounded life, not just a passionate life," she said. "We are therefore stripping away all of those pornographic interpretations people have put on it and presenting the book as a modern and savvy guide for how to live well." |

German shipping firm says pirates have taken its vessel Posted: Pirates seized another ship near the Somali coast Sunday, a German shipping company said. Beluga Shipping GmbH, based in the North Sea port-city of Bremen, said it had received an emergency call during the morning from one of its break-bulk carriers in the area and this seemed to be on account of a pirate attack. It did not state the nationality of the crew. Beluga operates a fleet of ships for specialised cargo types. The sea lanes off East Africa are vulnerable to pirates. On Saturday, pirates seized a Singapore-flagged tanker, the York. Its captain is a German national. He contacted his home by phone Sunday. The German foreign ministry said it set up a crisis team Sunday on the piracy issue. |
