| China denounces Nobel prize winner Posted: Family and friends of imprisoned dissident Liu Xiaobo came under pressure on Saturday as Chinese authorities digested his controversial Nobel Peace Prize win the previous day. Police forced Liu's wife to leave Beijing and were believed to have taken her to the northeastern city of Jinzhou, where her husband is imprisoned. Meanwhile, dozens of rights activists were detained or missing as Chinese police continued a crackdown. Police arrested at least 20 activists who were trying to celebrate the award of the prize to Liu Xiaobo, while several others said they were detained or kept under house arrest on Saturday. | ||
| F1 legend James Hunt 'slept with 5,000 women' Posted: F1 legend James Hunt was a sex addict who bedded 5,000 women as he lived life in the fast lane on and off the track, reveals a new book. The irresistibly good-looking Formula One champ, who was Britain''s favourite sportsman when he won the F1 world title in 1976, would go at full throttle anytime and anywhere, according to the book. "He must have slept with at least 5,000 women during his 30-year career as an accomplished and prolific swordsman," News of the World quoted a pal as saying. Hunt - who died of a heart attack in 1993 aged 45 - liked to have sex minutes before races - fitting in a quick pit stop just before the Japanese Grand Prix, which crowned him world champ. In fact, his unconventional title bid preparation involved a two-week booze and drug bender with his pal, world motorcycling champ Barry Sheene. In the expos , racing expert Tom Rubython reveals Hunt was more interested in romping with 36 BA hostesses on stopovers at his Tokyo hotel, bedding up to four a night. He wrote: "It wasn''t unusual for Hunt and Sheene to have sex with all the BA women, often together." Even on race day Hunt, who''d wear a T-shirt under his kit boasting "Sex - Breakfast of Champions", found time for women. | ||
| Using too much Facebook and Twitter may cost you your job Posted: Government and council employees in the UK using social networking sites at work or posting inappropriate comments from home are likely to face serious action, which includes being sacked. Police censured eight employees last year after they found using police computers to chat with their friends online. Another council caught staff using special software to get around a ban on using office computers to tweet on Twitter and ''update their status'' on Facebook during working hours. Now, Government departments and quangos, including officials planning the 2012 Olympics, have issued written guidelines to staff detailing their restrictions on using the sites, reports the Daily Mail. They are also paying thousands of pounds of taxpayers'' money to outside consultants for courses on the do''s and don''ts of how to behave on Facebook and similar sites. Last year it was revealed how Sir John Sawers, the head of MI6, was left exposed by a personal security breach after his wife published intimate photos and family details on Facebook. Last month the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) distributed a guide to all employees stating: "Facebook, Linked-In, Twitter have become very popular and offer significant business benefits. Their use poses risks both to the data on the ODA IT system and to the users of the sites and ODA." A letter to staff said they are allowed to use social networking sites in lunch break but warn: "You must not publish content about London 2012." | ||
| 4 Australian police officers sacked over racist emails Posted: Heeding to India's demands of strict action against Victorian Police officers involved in curculating a racist email video, Australian authorities have sacked four officers and demoted one. After a series of attacks on Indian students in Australia, a racist e-mail scandal has broken out showing Victoria Police officers joking about a video, which shows an Indian passenger on the roof of a train getting electrocuted as he touches the high-tension wires. According to the Herald Sun, the police officers have been implicated for circulating a video of an Indian man getting electrocuted while sitting on top of a train and joking that it could be a way to fix Melbourne's Indian student problem. Another five Victoria Police officers have been fined up to 3000 dollars and placed on 12 month good behaviour bonds for taking part in the circulation of the unsavoury material. Victoria Police said on Saturday it would resume disciplinary hearings this week into the circulation of pornographic and racist emails within the force. Two officers quit rather than face the secret hearings. External Affairs Minister SM Krishna had expressed shock over the circulation of a racist email targeting Indians, and asked the Australian authorities to take strict action against the culprits. "Implication of officers in such behavior, specially vis- -vis Indian community is shocking and a matter of grave concern, such attitudes have no place in any society," Krishna told reporters on Saturday. The Indian Foreign Office has summoned the Australian High Commissioner to India, Peter Varghese, over racist emails circulated by Victorian police officers. A strongly worded statement issued by Delhi's external affairs ministry underscored how seriously the Indian government has taken the issue. "Such behaviour and attitudes had no place in any society. It was hoped that the Australian authorities would take necessary and effective measures to address concerns regarding the safety of all people of Indian origin in Australia," the statement said. | ||
| Posted: The rare combination of dates today (10.10.10) sees couples across the country rush to tie the knot, and married couples re-scheduling C-sections
And like many lovebirds across the world, Antao and her fianc e Sheldon Mathias, who are getting married in Goa, are excited about the day as well as the date. In fact, they had consciously decided about the date a year ago. "The date is very significant and we had planned quite early to get married on this day. My mother's birthday also happens to be on my wedding day," says a beaming Mathias. In fact, it was Antao's parents who thought that 10.10.10 was the perfect date for their daughter's marriage. For the bride, it is a double bonanza. Hotels, florists, wedding organisers and photographers are flooded with offers from the soon-to-be-weds to organise and cover weddings on this date. In places like Goa, the demand for weddings today has been so high that many couples have had to compromise on their wedding arrangements. Explains Antao, "We did not get the car we wanted. So, we had to settle for a black BMW." Asha Shetty, Manager of Famy Marriage and Party Hall in Mumbai, has even refused families who had approached her to rent the hall. "A lot of Maharashtrian, Gujaratis and South Indian families have approached us for engagement parties but we couldn't accommodate them as the hall was full." The day, which will be marked as 'One Day on Earth' will see thousands of Chinese couples tying the knot. The date is referred to as "shi quan shi mei", meaning "perfect in every way". Sanjay B Jumaani, a numerologist and astrologer, says that the number is particularly lucky for people whose birthday dates add up to 1, 2, 4 and 7." Parents planning C-sections on D-Day Meanwhile, married couples too are gearing up to have their little bundle of joy's birth certificate reading 10.10.10 as their date of birth. Dr Anita Soni, gynaecologist and obstetrician with LH Hiranandani Hospital in Powai said that she had a couple scheduled for a C-section on this date. "The couple are in their early 30s and needed to have their baby delivered this week. So they asked to have the baby delivered on Sunday. They're excited to have their baby born on the day and since the mother had some complications, I thought it was a good idea to go ahead with it too," said Soni. (With inputs by Alisha Coelho) |
