This photo Oct. 5, 2010 photo provided by the University of Minnesota, shows a corn borer in an ear of corn. A study being published Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, in the journal Science finds corn that's been genetically engineered to resist corn borers has a 'halo effect' that provides huge benefits to other corn planted nearby simply by reducing the corn borer population in the area. Given that the pest costs U.S. farmers $1 billion a year, the economic benefits of Bt corn are dramatic, the study finds. Bt corn gets its name because it's engineered to produce a toxin from the common soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis. The toxin kills the European corn borer and some other insects but it's harmless to people and livestock. (AP Photo/University of Minnesota) NO SALESAP - This corn turns out to be a very good neighbor.
