LG Elec starts taking pre-orders for OLED TVs for Feb delivery Posted: 01 Jan 2013 04:10 PM PST SEOUL (Reuters) - LG Electronics Inc started taking orders on Wednesday for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) televisions, hoping to take the initiative over its rival Samsung in the next-generation technology. LG and Samsung showcased 55-inch OLED TVs a year ago but, priced five times higher than liquid-crystal display (LCD) equivalents, they have yet to reach store shelves. The technology is considered the future of consumer electronics displays and promises to change the way people use TVs, computers, tablets and smartphones. ... |
Thieves stole more than $1 million worth of Apple products during a New Years Eve heist Posted: 01 Jan 2013 03:19 PM PST As the world celebrated the New Year, masked men forced their way into an Apple (AAPL) retail store in Paris and made off with an estimated $1.32 million worth of iPads, iPhones and Macs, according to The Wall Street Journal. The suspects are said to have broken in through an employee entrance, slightly injuring a cleaner and a security guard. Apple products have been a hot commodity for thieves this year. In November, more than $1.5 million worth of iPad minis were stolen from a cargo building at John F. Kennedy airport, however the perpetrators were later arrested. The Apple Store heist is currently being investigated by French authorities. |
HP looks to unload dead weight by selling off underperforming divisions Posted: 01 Jan 2013 01:30 PM PST Unless a meteor strikes its corporate headquarters, things can only get better for HP (HPQ) in 2013. Bloomberg reports that HP is starting off the new year by taking a fresh look at which company divisions it needs for the future and which ones can be tossed over the side. In the company's most recent 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, it said that it was evaluating " the potential disposition of assets and businesses that may no longer help us meet our objectives," which is a strong hint that it wants to unload some underperforming segments. The one problem for HP, however, is that many of its assets could be toxic, especially in light of the company's recent |

Google still not sure how people will actually use Google Glass Posted: 01 Jan 2013 12:15 PM PST Google's (GOOG) Project Glass is one of the more intriguing products unveiled over the past year, as it looks to be the first-ever glasses headset that can project images and data directly onto users' eyes. But months after first showing off Glass, Google is still trying to figure out just how people will use the headset in their daily lives. In an interview with IEEE Spectrum, Glass project leader Babak Parviz said that Glass would generally be used as "a device that would allow for pictorial communications, to allow people to connect to others with images and video," but added that the company is still experimenting with ways to improve the headset's interactivity and overall usefulness. Among other things, Parviz said that the "feature |
New law makes it illegal for employers in California and Illinois to demand Facebook passwords Posted: 01 Jan 2013 11:05 AM PST New laws that took effect on January 1st, 2013 make it illegal for employers to demand access to their workers' password-protected Facebook (FB) accounts. After some high-profile instances of companies requiring access to employees' accounts, Congress was asked to consider a law making such demands illegal on the grounds that they constitute an invasion of privacy. Congress blocked the law, however its decision had no bearing on laws being considered at the state level. Now, California and Illinois have become the first two states to make it expressly illegal for employers to make such demands, Reuters reports. The new laws also apply to other similar social networks and are not limited to just Facebook. |
Hub for stolen iOS apps shuts down Posted: 01 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST A community dedicated to pirating iOS applications and distributing them via Cydia, an app store for jailbroken Apple devices, has been shut down by its creators. The popular community, called "Hackulous," was dedicated to cracking paid iOS applications and then distributing them via a Cydia application called "Installous." The Hackulous Team has posted a message on its site saying that the community has been shuttered due to lack of support, however, taking with it the Installous application and "AppTracker," an index for cracked apps, TorrentFreak reports. "We are very sad to announce that Hackulous is shutting down," the Hackulous Team wrote on its site. "After many years, our community has become stagnant and our forums are a bit of a ghost |
Sony shows off pictures of new Xperia smartphones Posted: 01 Jan 2013 09:06 AM PST Sony (SNE) on Tuesday tried to get out ahead of rival smartphone manufacturers in 2013 by showing off pictures of its two new Xperia smartphones. Per Engadget, Sony has put out pictures of both the Sony Xperia Z and the Xperia ZL ahead of their rumored launches later this month. We first got leaked details of the Xperia ZL this past fall back when it was codenamed "Odin" and was revealed to have a 5-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and 2GB of RAM. The Xperia Z, which had previously been known as the "Yuga", features very similar specs to the ZL including a 5-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, a quad-core processor, a |
Your Snapchats aren’t safe: How to secretly save videos from Snapchat or Facebook’s ‘Poke’ Posted: 01 Jan 2013 08:00 AM PST Argue though its executives might, Snapchat is good for two things: sending photos and videos of yourself making stupid faces, and sending photos and videos of yourself naked. The latter, of course, is the more compelling function since that is exactly what the app was designed for. When users send pictures or videos, the recipient can only view them for a set amount of time before they "self-destruct." Yes, a recipient can take a screenshot but the sender is automatically alerted when that occurs — then, as the saying goes, fool me once… As it turns out, however, Snapchat users (and users of "Poke," Facebook's (FB) Snapchat ripoff) can easily save photos and full-length videos received through the service without the |
No surprise: YouTube, Angry Birds, Instagram and Facebook among 2012′s top apps Posted: 01 Jan 2013 07:05 AM PST Although every app developer dreams of creating the next big mobile app, it seems that established applications are becoming more firmly entrenched at the top of the food chain. Per Reuters, year-end totals from the Apple (AAPL) App Store and Google (GOOG) Play show that stalwarts such as YouTube, Angry Birds, Instagram and Facebook (FB) "continued to be among the most downloaded apps of the year," which shouldn't be too surprising considering that all four are now staples of the mobile computing experience. There were a few newcomers that soared up the charts for iOS and Android, however, including the make-your-own-art game Draw Something, the Paper sketch pad app for the iPad and the Songza music discovery app. Apps have become a more popular |

South Sudan willing to withdraw army from Sudan border: president Posted: 31 Dec 2012 11:54 PM PST JUBA (Reuters) - South Sudan is willing to withdraw its army from the disputed border with Sudan, President Salva Kiir said, signaling a possible compromise at a summit with his Sudanese counterpart. Kiir and Sudan's Omar Hassan al-Bashir agreed in September to withdraw troops from the disputed border as a precondition to resume oil exports from landlocked South Sudan through Sudan. Oil revenues are vital to both economies. But both countries still have troops 10 km (6 miles) from each other's border, and both accuse each other of supporting rebels on the other's territory. ... |
