Why Sony’s decision to stop pushing 3D gaming on its users is the right call

Posted: 01 Oct 2012 07:05 PM PDT

Why Sony's decision to stop pushing 3D gaming on its users is the right callAfter years of trying to push 3D gaming onto PlayStation 3 users, Sony (SNE) is finally waking up and realizing nobody really cared or wanted the added depth. Speaking with Eurogamer, Sony's UK vice president and marketing director Fergal Gara said that "it's fair to say consumers have decided it's not hugely important at this time. It's a capability we've got. It may have a bigger life a little further down the line." Gara blamed 3D's failure to explode in the living room on two factors: wearing 3D glasses is a hassle and watching 3D at home is not a focused viewing experience as it is in a theater because of all the distractions from other devices such as tablets.

Dropping Ultrabook sales blamed on high prices and confusing marketing

Dropping Ultrabook sales blamed on high prices and confusing marketingOnce seen as the PC industry's only hope in the "post-PC era," the number of Ultrabooks expected to ship by the end of this year is now estimated to only be half as much as projected. According to an IHS iSupply report, only 10.3 million Ultrabooks might be shipped this year as opposed to the 22 million previously forecasted. IHS iSupply says "nebulous marketing and unappealing price" are the two biggest factors holding Ultrabooks back. iSupply specifically points to Intel's (INTL) constantly changing definition for what is and isn't an Ultrabook as a prime example of poor marketing. And by price, the research firms says that Ultrabooks are too expensive at the $1,000 price point and will only see growth if prices dip

Nokia not seen recovering, could be broken up and sold for partsThings haven't been getting any better from Nokia (NOK) lately, and Credit Suisse on Monday officially downgraded the troubled Finnish phone manufacturer from "neutral" to "underperform." And as Street Insider reports, the bank doesn't see Nokia recovering in the future and suggests that breaking up the company and selling it off in pieces could now be its best-case scenario. In particular, Credit Suisse said that Apple (AAPL) may be interested in buying some of Nokia's patents to boost its own portfolio while "Ericsson, Huawai, ZTE may be interested in parts of Nokia Seimens Networks." Credit Suisse said it was highly unlikely that any company would be willing to buy the entire company. Read

Low early Windows 8 adoption numbers sound alarm bells for Microsoft

Low early Windows 8 adoption numbers sound alarm bells for MicrosoftMicrosoft (MSFT) had better hope that early adoption numbers aren't a reflection of consumer interest in Windows 8, because if they are then the company could be headed for a Vista-style disaster. ComputerWorld reports on new numbers from research and analytics firm Net Applications showing that just 0.33% of all Windows-based computers ran on Windows 8 in September. For comparison's sake, ComputerWorld notes that 1.64% of Windows-based computers were running on Windows 7 the month before it was released in 2009, meaning that the early adoption rate of Windows 7 was roughly five times that of Windows 8. Needless to say, if these numbers are reflection of how people feel about Windows 8, then it adds a lot more weight to some
