Obama and Christie make unlikely traveling companions Posted: 30 Oct 2012 03:12 PM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - No one's calling it a "campaign" event. But it will surely dominate the presidential campaign on Wednesday when Democratic President Barack Obama and New Jersey's Republican Governor Chris Christie inspect storm damage in the hard hit coastal state - together. Had Obama been traveling with any old Republican governor, few would have taken notice. But Christie is not any old governor. He's young, at 50, and a possible Republican presidential contender as soon as 2016, should Mitt Romney happen to lose. And he's not just any critic of Obama. ... |

Lukewarm jobs report awaits Americans as election nears Posted: 30 Oct 2012 01:19 PM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. job growth likely picked up in October, but not enough to prevent the unemployment rate from rising off a near four-year low, although that might not matter for next week's presidential election. Coming four days ahead of the tight contest, the closely watched employment report on Friday is not expected to shift much from its recent pattern, limiting its impact on voters. Employers are expected to have added 125,000 jobs to their payrolls in October, up from 114,000 in September, according to a Reuters survey of economists. ... |
