Waiting for the mobile core gaming revolution Posted: 24 Sep 2012 02:54 PM PDT Mobile gaming is a great thing. I am a big believer in the phone as a major gaming platform. And it is a major gaming platform. The NPD Group revealed this month that for the first time ever, there are more mobile gamers than core gamers right now, which means there are more people playing games on their phones than there are playing games on their Xbox 360s, PlayStation 3s and PCs combined. |

Geek.com reports that 11-year-old Victoria Walker, with an assist from grown-up software designer David Grau, has designed an app called "Rode Dog" that makes incessant barking sounds at people who are using their smartphones in their car, and it won't stop barking until they put their phones down. Geek.com says that the app recently won a $20,000 award from AT&T (T) as part of the carrier's "It Can Wait" contest that offers prizes for developers who created apps that discourage texting while driving. As far as functionality goes, the app lets users form groups with their friends to help police |
In the Future, Even Your Bathroom Mirror Will Be a Computer Posted: 24 Sep 2012 08:10 PM PDT If you're bored with your little smart phone and less little tablet, you might consider investing in one of the latest impressive touchscreen devices: mirrors. The idea sounds either very silly or totally obvious depending on your opinion of the future of technology. And it's bound to lead to more Snow White jokes that you'd care to hear. Either way, the touchscreen computer mirror is real, it's here and it's actually pretty useful. |

Verizon’s iPhone 5 will remain factory unlocked forever Posted: 24 Sep 2012 05:30 PM PDT When it was discovered last Friday that Verizon's (VZ) iPhone 5 came unlocked, customers started questioning how long it would be before the carrier locked it back up. After all, Sprint (S) initially sold unlocked iPhone 4S handsets and then locked them back up last year. Verizon has confirmed to The Associated Press that it will not lock the iPhone 5 nano-SIM slot in any future update, however. This is great news for customers who want Verizon's coverage over CDMA and 4G LTE in the U.S., but also want the freedom to pop in another carrier's nano-SIM card when roaming internationally. As for why Verizon has decided to pass on this grand gesture to its customers, MacRumors reports that an FCC regulation prevents the carrier from locking any handsets |

The company's goal is to have some version of the technology available in "a year or two." Read |

Six years later, the PS3 is already showing its age, as is its main competitor, Microsoft's (MSFT) Xbox 360. Both gamers and developers want new consoles to play with and develop for, and in a recent interview with GameSpot, Sony's VP of hardware marketing John Koller suggested that regardless of when the highly anticipated PlayStation 4 (code-named "Orbis") launches, Sony will support the PS3 for at least three more years. Speaking on how long the PS3 would stick around, Koller told GameSpot: "We're going to continue supporting the PS3 for the next few years. Absolutely. And we're going to continue supporting it not |

It was unclear from the court documents how much in taxes HP would now owe, but according to the ruling, the amounts under dispute involved tens of millions of dollars. HP had challenged an Internal Revenue Service ruling on the matter. The IRS had said the computer maker owed taxes in cases where it tried to claim the credit between 1999 and 2003. ... |
