The rare apology follows Apple's launch of its own mapping service earlier this month, when it began selling the iPhone 5 and rolled out iOS 6, the highly anticipated update to its mobile software platform. ... |

FCC potentially frees up more spectrum by approving new auction process Posted: 29 Sep 2012 10:15 AM PDT While it likely won't quench the wireless carriers' thirst for more spectrum anytime soon, the Federal Communications Commission on Friday took an important step toward opening up more airwaves for mobile data use by voting 5-0 to approve a new spectrum auction process that will reward television broadcasters for voluntarily relinquishing unused spectrum. The New York Times reports that "a portion of the proceeds" from the auctions will go to broadcasters that relinquish their spectrum licenses and notes that the government estimates the incentive auctions "could generate $15 billion" in total revenues. Any auction of relinquished broadcaster spectrum will likely not take place until 2014 at the earliest. Read |

U.S. regional carriers undercut major carries with iPhone 5 discounts Posted: 29 Sep 2012 06:35 AM PDT There's just no getting around it: iPhone 5′s aren't cheap. For most people, it'll cost at least $199 with a two-year contract for a 16GB model. But U.S. regional carriers are sweetening the deal on the iPhone 5 with $50 discounts on all three iPhone models. Instead of $199 (16GB), $299 (32GB) and $399 (64GB), customers who sign two-year contracts with Appalachian Wireless, Cellcom or nTelos can pick them up for $50 less than what Apple (AAPL) and the three major U.S. carriers are selling them for. The same regional carriers are also selling the 16GB iPhone 4S for $49.99 with a two-year contract, or $50 less than Apple, AT&T (T), Sprint (S) and Verizon Wireless (VZ). Read |
