As reported by GigaOm, Comcast on Tuesday unveiled its new "platinum" Xfinity broadband tier that promises speeds of up to 305Mbps, slightly higher than the 300Mbps promised by Verizon FiOS' top tier. An Apple logo is seen at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2012 in San FranciscoSAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc results fell short of Wall Street's lofty expectations as a sagging European economy and a pause in iPhone sales ahead of a new version saw revenues slip from the previous quarter. Hackers publish 11 million gamer passwords onlineA user at password-hacking forum Inside Pro earlier this month published a half-gigabyte file that contained as many as 11 million passwords collected from users at the popular German gaming site Gamigo, Forbes reports. Even though the file containing the passwords has been removed from the forum, Forbes says the damage may have already been done since the file was available for weeks before being taken down. Steve Thomas, the founder of data breach warning service PwnedList, told Forbes that the published passwords represent "largest leak I've ever actually seen," although he said that he could only count 8.2 million unique email addresses and passwords in the file rather than the 11 million claimed by the original leaker. Skype's own privacy policy says it can spy on users' IMsThere have been a lot of questions going around over the past few days about whether Microsoft (MSFT) and Skype are able to eavesdrop on their users' conversations after some hackers accused the company of changing its architecture to make it easier for companies to snoop on users. Now, ZDNet's Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols has combed through Skype's own privacy policy and has found out that it is at the very least keeping track of its users' instant messages. Under its privacy policy, Skype says that it stores user IMs "for a maximum of 30 days unless otherwise permitted or required by law" while storing voicemails for up to 60 days as well. According to Vaughan-Nicols, this means that "Microsoft can and does record all

Well, it seems the two companies are finally ready to start testing it out, as All Things D reports the new service is undergoing alpha testing with the hopes of launching later this year. But as the report states, users should keep their expectations somewhat low when it comes to the new Redbox Instant service, since it will likely focus more on movies than popular television shows and it probably won't feature a lot of hot recent releases since "Hollywood studios weren't excited about giving Netflix (NFLX) access to relatively recent films for its service, and I don't think they'll treat Redbox Instant any

Rock stars say Google is to blame for enabling piracySeveral rock legends, including Elton John, Robert Plant and Queen guitarist Brian May, sent a letter to the Telegraph on Tuesday accusing Google (GOOG) of enabling pirates to steal their music. The letter, which was also sent to British Prime Minister David Cameron, implored both the government and the private sector to do more to protect musicians' intellectual property rights. The letter pointed the finger at search engines such as Google for being lax in blocking sites from search results that let users download copyrighted material for free, and said that the engines must "play their part in protecting consumers and creators from illegal sites." Seeing so many high-profile musicians come out against online piracy must be intimidating to file-sharing sites, especially
