Boid for Twitter is a mixed bag so far Posted: 24 Jul 2012 01:00 PM PDT I am an avid Twitter user, and so I'm always on the lookout for a great new Twitter app. Boid for Twitter, which is in beta for Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean devices, looks like that next great Twitter app at first glance, but when we dig down deep, we discover we aren't so happy with it. |
Comcast charges a wallet-incinerating $300 a month for new 305Mbps ‘platinum’ broadband Posted: 24 Jul 2012 08:30 PM PDT Comcast (CMCSA) customers now have access to roughly the same level of top-tier service as Verizon (VZ) FiOS customers if they're willing to pay $90 more for it. As reported by GigaOm, Comcast on Tuesday unveiled its new "platinum" Xfinity broadband tier that promises speeds of up to 305Mbps, slightly higher than the 300Mbps promised by Verizon FiOS' top tier. The catch is that the new Xfinity tier will set users back $300 a month, or $90 more than what FiOS subscribers pay for their top-tier service. GigaOm does say, however, that Comcast's lower tiers are cheaper than comparable tiers from Verizon, as 50Mbps FiOS costs around $75 per month while 50Mbps Xfinity costs around $59 per month if bundled with |
Apple blames rare miss on new iPhone anticipation, economy Posted: 24 Jul 2012 08:08 PM PDT SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc results fell short of Wall Street's lofty expectations as a sagging European economy and a pause in iPhone sales ahead of a new version saw revenues slip from the previous quarter. Shares fell more than 5 percent to $570.81 in late trade after the world's most valuable technology company - which beats expectations with near regularity - reported its second quarterly miss in less than a year. Apple's suppliers also felt the pain. Shares of LG Display, Toshiba and Hon Hai sank between 5 and 7 percent. ... |
Hackers publish 11 million gamer passwords online Posted: 24 Jul 2012 07:35 PM PDT A user at password-hacking forum Inside Pro earlier this month published a half-gigabyte file that contained as many as 11 million passwords collected from users at the popular German gaming site Gamigo, Forbes reports. Even though the file containing the passwords has been removed from the forum, Forbes says the damage may have already been done since the file was available for weeks before being taken down. Steve Thomas, the founder of data breach warning service PwnedList, told Forbes that the published passwords represent "largest leak I've ever actually seen," although he said that he could only count 8.2 million unique email addresses and passwords in the file rather than the 11 million claimed by the original leaker. Gamigo had apparently warned its users months ago |

On the Call: Netflix CEO Reed Hastings Posted: 24 Jul 2012 06:33 PM PDT As Netflix's Internet video streaming service gets heavier usage, it can cause some conflicts in large households where different family members all simultaneously vying to watch different shows from the company's library. Netflix currently lets a single account stream video on two different devices at the same time, meaning three or four household members can't check different things out from the video library at the same time. |
Skype’s own privacy policy says it can spy on users’ IMs Posted: 24 Jul 2012 06:30 PM PDT There have been a lot of questions going around over the past few days about whether Microsoft (MSFT) and Skype are able to eavesdrop on their users' conversations after some hackers accused the company of changing its architecture to make it easier for companies to snoop on users. Now, ZDNet's Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols has combed through Skype's own privacy policy and has found out that it is at the very least keeping track of its users' instant messages. Under its privacy policy, Skype says that it stores user IMs "for a maximum of 30 days unless otherwise permitted or required by law" while storing voicemails for up to 60 days as well. According to Vaughan-Nicols, this means that "Microsoft can and does record all |

Verizon, Redbox get ready to go toe-to-toe with Netflix Posted: 24 Jul 2012 05:25 PM PDT Remember when Verizon (VZ) and Coinstar's (CSTR) Redbox agreed earlier this year to create a joint video streaming service? Well, it seems the two companies are finally ready to start testing it out, as All Things D reports the new service is undergoing alpha testing with the hopes of launching later this year. But as the report states, users should keep their expectations somewhat low when it comes to the new Redbox Instant service, since it will likely focus more on movies than popular television shows and it probably won't feature a lot of hot recent releases since "Hollywood studios weren't excited about giving Netflix (NFLX) access to relatively recent films for its service, and I don't think they'll treat Redbox Instant any |

Apple blames quarterly miss on new model anticipation, economy Posted: 24 Jul 2012 04:56 PM PDT SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc's results fell short of Wall Street's expectations as the European economy sagged and consumers held off on buying its flagship iPhone ahead of a new version expected in the fall, hitting its stock price. Shares of the world's most valuable technology company shed more than 5 percent of their value after Apple - which beats Wall Street expectations with near regularity - reported its second quarterly miss on results in less than a year. The stock slid to $570.81 in late trade after closing at $600.92 on the Nasdaq. ... |
Apple’s iPod touch to get iPhone 5-like makeover ahead of September launch Posted: 24 Jul 2012 04:30 PM PDT Apple (AAPL) is gearing up for quite a fall season if even half of the current rumors floating around pan out. First we're looking at a brand new "iPhone 5″ in September, then Apple will reportedly launch a new "iPad mini" alongside a tweaked third-generation iPad tablet soon after. That's not all, however, as well-connected KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says Apple has plans to launch a redesigned iPod touch in September as well. "Though all new design iPod touch and iPod nano will be launched, growth momentum will mainly come from the latter," Ming-Chi wrote in a note to investors on Tuesday. "The new iPod touch, like iPhone 5, uses in-cell panel, whose availability is limited in the initial stage. |

The European Commission said on Tuesday that there was a "level of good understanding" with the world's most popular search engine regarding its latest proposals that would form the basis of discussions before the Commission makes a final decision whether to accept them. ... |

Posted: 24 Jul 2012 03:42 PM PDT As journalists, we're naturally interested in what the Associated Press' new social media guidelines have to say about "liking" on Facebook. It turns out our readers are, too. The AP recommends its journalists avoid "liking" the Facebook pages of political candidates because it can be misconstrued as an endorsement. Commenter Erik Jacobsen also feels that "liking" certain content on Facebook can be awkward: |

Rock stars say Google is to blame for enabling piracy Posted: 24 Jul 2012 03:35 PM PDT Several rock legends, including Elton John, Robert Plant and Queen guitarist Brian May, sent a letter to the Telegraph on Tuesday accusing Google (GOOG) of enabling pirates to steal their music. The letter, which was also sent to British Prime Minister David Cameron, implored both the government and the private sector to do more to protect musicians' intellectual property rights. The letter pointed the finger at search engines such as Google for being lax in blocking sites from search results that let users download copyrighted material for free, and said that the engines must "play their part in protecting consumers and creators from illegal sites." Seeing so many high-profile musicians come out against online piracy must be intimidating to file-sharing sites, especially |
