Did a ‘Follow Friday’ list reveal the name of Mitt Romney’s VP choice? Posted: 27 Jul 2012 08:16 PM PDT With the 2012 Olympic Games now officially underway in England, it can be easy to forget that 2012 is also notable for being a presidential election year... at least for the next few weeks. Well, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney … Continue reading → |

Please, NBC and IOC, Learn How to Share the Olympics Posted: 27 Jul 2012 04:38 PM PDT Oh, those Olympic moments. The three-hour opening ceremony was full of them, everything from James Bond escorting the Queen to the stadium (via helicopter and parachute!) to a 10-story-tall Voldemort and giant baby (don't ask) and, perhaps best of all, the beloved Mr. Bean, a.k.a. Rowan Atkinson, losing himself in a "Chariots of Fire" montage. Spectacular, memorable, viral and mostly, wholly unavailable. |

Study suggests reading this post could make you blind Posted: 27 Jul 2012 07:00 PM PDT The United States Department of Health & Human Services suggests people limit exposure to screens such as computer monitors and television sets to less than two hours per day. According to a recent study published in the Journal of Pediatrics, however, today's children are exceeding the recommended maximum exposure time by 66%. To make matters worse, millions of jobs also require workers to sit behind some sort of screen that could be potentially harming their eyes. A Healthier Michigan notes that when users focus on a screen for a long time, the small muscles in the eyes remain contracted, resulting in fatigue, blurred vision and an inability to focus. While a typical person blinks between 12 and 15 times a minute, when |

Apple saves face, doesn’t have to place ‘Samsung didn’t copy us’ newspaper ads… yet Posted: 27 Jul 2012 05:55 PM PDT As the patent war between Apple (AAPL) and Samsung (005930) continues to heat up in the United States, Apple has won another small victory abroad, albeit temporarily. A judge in the United Kingdom ruled last week that as part of retribution for repeatedly relaying damning messages about Samsung products, Apple would have to place several advertisements in British newspapers explaining that Samsung products do not copy Apple's despite the Cupertino, California-based company's repeated prior claims. All Things D reports that on Thursday, however, the judge granted Apple's request to postpone the punishment through October, when the iPhone maker will have a chance to appeal the decision in court. If 'A Space Odyssey' Were Reimagined as a Hollywood Blockbuster Posted: 27 Jul 2012 05:11 PM PDT Stanley Kubrick's classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey set the bar for science-fiction films and is still influencing movie makers. But, what would the film look like if it was made today? |
Kim Dotcom claims vindication after leaked music industry report Posted: 27 Jul 2012 04:50 PM PDT Kim Dotcom may be zany, but he also has some compelling facts on his side. In an interview with Ars Technica Thursday, the embattled Megaupload founder pointed to a leaked report from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) showing that Megaupload was far from the worst offender when it came to hosting URLs that infringed upon copyrighted material. In fact, per the IFPI report, the number of infringing URLs hosted by Megaupload was positively dwarfed by file-sharing sites such as filesonic.com, which accounted for nearly half of all infringing URLs, and wupload.co.uk. "If the largest file hoster in the world does not represent a significant percentage of infringing URL's found by IFPI, this can only lead to one conclusion," |

Nokia confirms closure of final Finnish factory Posted: 27 Jul 2012 03:55 PM PDT Nokia (NOK) on Friday confirmed the imminent closure of its last factory in Finland. Though there have been some bright spots for Nokia, the struggling smartphone maker reported its third consecutive billion-dollar loss in the second quarter this year, highlighting just how difficult is has become for vendors to thrive in a market dominated by just two companies. As part of Nokia's continuing efforts to cut costs, the company on Friday told Yle that its last Finnish factory in Salo, Finland will close this fall. 780 workers will lose their jobs as a result, finding themselves among the 10,000 employees Nokia will lay off by the end of 2013. Analysis: Internet stock collapse dents Silicon Valley Posted: 27 Jul 2012 03:46 PM PDT SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Social media companies, once hailed by their Silicon Valley boosters as world-changing businesses with limitless potential, are instead proving a sobering reminder of how investors can be seduced by Internet hype. With a few exceptions, the first wave of social media firms to trade on the public markets has delivered a disastrous performance that conjures memories of the dot-com bust of 2000. "Farmville" publisher Zynga, which went public in December at a valuation of $7 billion, is trading around $3.15 a share, more than 68 percent off its $10 IPO price. ... |

The U.S. company admitted in May 2010 that its vehicles, which photograph neighbourhoods to create street level images, had accidentally collected data from unsecured wireless networks used by residents in more than 30 countries. ... |

Apple, Samsung take patent fight to crucial California trial Posted: 27 Jul 2012 03:14 PM PDT SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd take their battle for mobile supremacy to court on Monday in one of the biggest-ever technology patent trials, a case with the potential to reshape a fast-evolving market they now dominate. The tech titans will lock horns in a federal courtroom in San Jose, California, just miles from Apple's headquarters. The stakes are high, with Samsung facing potential U.S. sales bans of its Galaxy smartphones and tablet computers, and Apple in a pivotal test of its worldwide patent litigation strategy. ... |
Google's Apology for Not Deleting Street View Data Isn't Enough Posted: 27 Jul 2012 03:13 PM PDT Google has apologized for keeping user data it said it destroyed, but that hasn't placated its critics. Back in 2010, the company had said it would destroy some information it had collected over wireless networks in the U.K. while making its street view maps. Today, Google admitted that it did not in fact delete all that information, reports The Telegraph's Matt Warmann, adding this small "sorry!" to the letter it sent the United Kingdom's Information Commissioner's Office, which worked with Google to investigate the original privacy breach. ... |

Galaxy Note unofficially gets Jelly Bean Posted: 27 Jul 2012 03:00 PM PDT Android fragmentation is a notorious pain, but it seems some crafty software developers are taking matters into their own hands. Via PocketNow, XDA-Developers forum member XpLoDWilD has posted a preview of the new CyanogenMod 10 that is described as a "free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean" that "can be used without any need to have any Google application installed." The folks at PocketNow tried installing the mod onto the Samsung (005930) Galaxy Note and have, so far, come up with mixed results. "So far, we've found the CM10 previews to be exceptionally stable and (most importantly) fast," they write. "How about [on] the Galaxy Note? Well, that might be the exception. Friday's request by the world's largest search engine company followed a federal judge's March 2011 rejection of a sweeping $125 million settlement of the now seven-year-old case. Facebook’s stock is tanking – did investors get played by big banks? Posted: 27 Jul 2012 02:05 PM PDT Although Facebook (FB) met expectations in its first-ever earnings report on Thursday, the reaction from investors has been decidedly ugly so far. By the end of trading on Friday, the company's stock price had dropped by 117% to close at $23.70, or about half the value of its 52-week peak of $45. Making things worse, Facebook's big slide came on a day when the NASDAQ closed up 2.24%, meaning Facebook can't plausibly blame its slide on weak U.S. GDP numbers or other external factors. As Forbes's Nathan Vardi notes, Facebook was never really in an ideal situation to go public this year and investment banks used the company's brand-name status to hype it to unreasonable expectations, especially given that no one knew |
