Instead it allows you to make greeting cards, invitations and scrapbook pages digitally. Google Nexus Q hacked to load video games Posted: 28 Jun 2012 08:40 PM PDT Google unveiled the Nexus Q streaming device at its annual Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco on Wednesday. For a media device, the Nexus Q has surprisingly good specs, featuring a dual-core TI OMAP 4460 CPU, the same chip found inside the Galaxy Nexus. The Q is also equipped with a Power VR SGX540 GPU, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Less than 12 hours after the Nexus Q was announced, Philippe Hausler, an Android app developer, managed to get the Android game Swords and Soldiers to load on the device. The game won't actually run, but Hausler's efforts highlight the flexibility and potential of the Nexus Q. [Via SlashGear] Read |

Severe weather warnings to be sent directly to smartphones Posted: 28 Jun 2012 07:55 PM PDT The National Weather Service will begin sending severe weather warnings to smartphone owners in the path of a dangerous storm. The NWS's new Wireless Emergency Alerts system will be able to warn Americans about impending weather, even if they are not watching television or listening to the radio. The system will notify people about approaching tornadoes, hurricanes, typhoons, tsunamis, flash floods, extreme winds, blizzards and ice and dust storms, the Associated Press reported. Warnings will come in the form of a free text message that will be no more than 90 characters and will be sent to "late-model smartphones" that will then sound a special alert and vibrate. "These alerts will make sure people are aware of any impending danger |

Exclusive: Microsoft tie-up, network sale among RIM options: sources Posted: 28 Jun 2012 07:41 PM PDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - Research In Motion Ltd's board is under mounting pressure to consider unpalatable options such as selling its network business or forming an alliance with Microsoft Corp after the Blackberry maker again delayed the release of its next-generation smartphones, said three sources familiar with the situation. Shares in the Canadian company, which announced a steeper-than-expected quarterly operating loss on Thursday, plunged 18 percent in extended trading, slashing its market value to $4.1 billion. Chrome for iOS hits No.1 in Apple’s App Store Posted: 28 Jun 2012 07:10 PM PDT Google's Chrome browser quickly became one of the most popular desktop Web browsers in the world, and now Google has its sites set on mobile. The app just launched for the iPhone and iPad earlier today and after a few short hours of availability, it's already the No.1 top free app in Apple's iOS App Store. The app is far more popular than its Android counterpart after less than one day on the market — of course, the Android version is only compatible with 7% of Android devices since it is Ice Cream Sandwich-only — and that's a pretty impressive feat considering it's little more than a Safari skin with a sleek UI and desktop sync. That sleek UI is |

Next iPhone will be ‘biggest product launch in consumer electronics history’ Posted: 28 Jun 2012 06:45 PM PDT Surprise! An Apple product is already getting absurd amounts of hype months before its release. Per StreetInsider, the latest batch of Apple hype comes from Wells Fargo, which on Wednesday reiterated its Outperform rating on Apple's stock and said that the next-generation iPhone "will be the biggest product launch in consumer electronics' history" when it's released this fall. Given that every new iPhone model has been dubbed the "biggest product launch ever" by one entity or another over the past five years, this isn't surprising. Among other things, the new version of the iPhone is rumored to have 4G LTE connectivity, a case that's 7.6 millimeters thin, NFC support and a new 19-pin mini dock connector. Read |
Fun with $1,500 glasses: Project Glass skydive stunt captured on video Posted: 28 Jun 2012 06:10 PM PDT Falling squarely in the don't try this at home category, Google on Wednesday took to the sky to demonstrate its Project Glass digital eyewear prototypes. Google's connected glasses — which may already have the company's rivals scrambling to launch similar products — merge eyewear and a smart device with a small display just above the user's field of vision to create a wearable computer. And what better way to show off the device's capabilities than to film a stunt crew skydiving? To put a nice cherry on top of Google's demo, all video footage for the stunt was recorded on Project Glass eyewear. "The higher fidelity footage was recorded locally on the device whereas the hangouts were live streamed at a |

Judge rules Kim Dotcom mansion raid was illegal Posted: 28 Jun 2012 05:35 PM PDT Justice Helen Winkelmann on Thursday ruled the warrants that allowed more than 90 New Zealand officers to raid Kim Dotcom's home and other properties earlier this year were too broadly cast, The Guardian reported. The judge said the warrants were therefore invalid and lacked "adequate specificity as to the offense," adding that it was "clear that the police, in executing the warrants, have exceeded what they could lawfully be authorised to do." Winkelmann said police acted unlawfully by refusing to release material that was not relevant to the charges, and handing over cloned hard drives to the FBI was in breach of extradition legislation. The Megaupload founder released a statement praising the ruling. "We are very happy with today's decision," |

Nokia CEO voices regret surrounding recent company decisions Posted: 28 Jun 2012 04:50 PM PDT RIM isn't the only former smartphone giant that's hurting, as Finnish smartphone manufacturer Nokia has been getting hammered lately as well. And according to Asymco's Horace Dediu, it seems that Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has a few regrets about some of his company's recent decisions. Dediu provdies a translation of Elop's interview on Thursday with a Finnish newspaper where executive says he'd change several decisions that Nokia has made if he had the chance. "The past year and a half have had situations where we might [have done] some things differently if we had known [things were] changing so rapidly, even faster than anyone could have predicted," Elop said according to Dediu. "One example of this is the Android phones |

A look at RIM's much-delayed BlackBerry 10 Posted: 28 Jun 2012 03:23 PM PDT |
Posted: 28 Jun 2012 03:20 PM PDT It's truly incredible how fast things in the tech space can change. Just two years ago RIM was on a high, and moments ago, when the company reported its Q1 earnings, it was apparent that what I've been saying for the last four years has come true: RIM, Research In Motion, the company that practically invented mobile email, that drastically changed the technology industry, a forward thinking company invented and run by two brilliant men, is finished. A lot of people realized that back when the iPhone came out — the game was changed forever. I've known the company at an intimate level for more than seven years, since I was 18 years old and I leaked the BlackBerry Pearl |
