Incessant snow brings UK to a halt Posted: Europe is in the grip of a big freeze with heavy snowfall and Arctic temperatures causing major road, rail and air disruption that has left hundreds stranded. The cold weather continued its grip on the UK and continental Europe on Wednesday. In Poland many areas were covered in snow, causing traffic snarl ups and delays for commuters. Polish police said eight men died Tuesday night after a bitter cold front roared in. |
Attacks on immigrants on the rise in Greece Posted: Immigrants have been beaten and stabbed near central squares, and several makeshift mosques have been burned and vandalized. In the most grievous attack, at the end of October, the assailants locked the door of a basement prayer site and hurled firebombs through the windows, seriously wounding four worshipers. |

Students protest in Rome, London; oppose reform bill Posted: Thousands of university students and young people across the United Kingdom took to the streets on Tuesday to demonstrate against proposed hikes to British tuition fees. Most demonstrations were peaceful but a group of demonstrators at Trafalgar Square in central London repeatedly clashed with riot police. Protesters pushed against lines of riot police and some threw objects at officers, who responded with batons. No serious injuries were immediately reported. |
Indians top buyers at Burj Khalifa Posted: Indians top the list of buyers in the world's tallest tower having acquired space worth USD 7.9 million in the first seven months of the skyscrapers opening. Prominent buyers of swanky apartments in the 100 floor Burj Khalifa tower include London-based NRI businessman Raj Kundra, who presented an apartment to his wife Shilpa Shetty. Local businessman of Indian origin B R Shetty, who is managing director and CEO of the New Medical Centre Group of Companies in Abu Dhabi, has also bought the entire 100th floor in the tower. Rizwan Sajan, Chairman of Danube Group is also reported to have recently purchased an apartment in the tower. As the world still reels under a economic downturn, the local UAE nationals come second having spent USD 2.62 million on buying space in the tower, a news report citing real estate information company Reidin.com has said. |

Russia creates world's first nuclear fuel bank Posted: Russia has successfully completed the creation of the world's first international nuclear fuel bank under an agreement with the IAEA, the Rosatom state atomic energy corporation said today. The fuel bank now stores 120 tonnes of low-enriched uranium (LEU) in the Siberian city of Angarsk, the Russian agency said in a statement. "This is enough to complete two refuels of the world's most commonly-used light-water reactors with a capacity of 1,000 MW," the Rosatom statement said. |
