Peanut company linked to salmonella outbreak expands recall Posted: 14 Oct 2012 08:43 AM PDT (Reuters) - The New Mexico food producer linked to salmonella-tainted peanut butter has expanded its recall to include raw and roasted peanuts, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. Sunland Inc has also halted production at its nut butter and peanut processing facilities, the FDA said on Saturday. The moves came after food safety investigators looking into the tainted peanut butter inspected Sunland's production line and found salmonella that DNA tests determined was identical to the strain that caused last month's outbreak. ... |

Moon rocks, chunks of Mars on auction block in New York Posted: 14 Oct 2012 01:16 PM PDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - Several lumps of Mars and the biggest piece of the Moon ever offered for sale were unveiled on Sunday in New York in what organizers described as history's largest meteorite auction. More than 125 meteorites were being auctioned in the private sale, including an iron meteorite resembling a howling face that was found in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa and a slice of the Willamette meteorite from the American Museum of Natural History, estimated to sell for at least $85,000. The 4-pound (1.8-kg) Moon rock was expected to go for more than $340,000. ... |

Moon rocks, chunks of Mars auctioned in New York Posted: 14 Oct 2012 06:56 PM PDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - Meteorites from Mars and the biggest piece of the Moon ever offered for sale went on the block on Sunday in New York in what organizers billed as history's largest meteorite auction, which brought in over $1 million. More than 125 meteorites were offered in the private sale, from gray pockmarked lumps of iron to highly polished slabs glittering with extraterrestrial gems. But many of the big-ticket items, estimated to sell for $50,000 or more, did not find buyers. The most expensive items on offer were four pounds (1. ... |

Skydiver breaks record for manned balloon flight at 23 miles high Posted: 14 Oct 2012 10:36 AM PDT ROSWELL, New Mexico (Reuters) - Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner broke the record for the highest manned balloon flight on Sunday after his craft rose 23 miles above New Mexico, project sponsors said. The 43-year-old daredevil was inside a capsule tethered to the massive but extremely delicate helium balloon high above Roswell, New Mexico. He aimed to set four world records, including jumping from the capsule to become the first person to break the speed of sound in a skydiving freefall. (Editing by Barbara Goldberg and Doina Chiacu) |

Factbox: Greatest risks of high-altitude skydiving Posted: 14 Oct 2012 07:25 AM PDT (Reuters) - Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner faces a slew of dangers during his attempt to break the altitude record for a freefall jump on Sunday. Here is a look at some of the risks: Colliding shock waves, triggered by a human body moving faster than the speed of sound, could hit with the force of an explosion, though the risk of this is much less likely in the stratosphere, where the air is extremely thin. The low-pressure environment could cause Baumgartner to go into a flat spin. ... |
