Netflix, Freesat team to drive another nail in pay-TV’s coffin

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 05:00 PM PDT

Netflix, Freesat team to drive another nail in pay-TV's coffinHere's a good reason to envy of your friends across the pond: They'll soon have a free satellite television service that will come integrated with Netflix (NFLX). The Telegraph reports that Netflix and Freesat are teaming up to sell a new set-top box that "will give users direct access to Netflix and other on-demand services" along with Freesat's subscription-free satellite television service. As the report explains, Freesat is a partnership between both the BBC and ITV to deliver satellite television services that are free after users buy a set-top box. This has obviously caused friction with pay-TV services such as BSkyB, which believes the BBC is acting more as a commercial entity than a public broadcasting network. Read

How one company is putting 'Super Wi-Fi' on the fast trackWi-Fi has been one of the most useful technologies developed over the past couple of decades and it's about to get even better now that manufacturers will be allowed to create devices that run on the former television "white space" spectrum that lets signals travel farther and penetrate more deeply into buildings. And to help speed up the adoption of this so-called "Super Wi-Fi," wireless technology company Spectrum Bridge has announced a certification program for wireless OEMs that want to zip through the Federal Communications Commission's rigorous certification process that the commission put in place to make sure that "Super Wi-Fi" devices don't interfere with television broadcasts being run over adjacent spectrum. Apple may release redesigned headphones alongside iPhone 5 [video]Apple's (AAPL) in-ear headphones have seen few changes since being introduced alongside the company's original iPod in 2001. According to images published by Vietnamese site Tinhte.vn, however, Apple may introduce redesigned headphones with its next-generation iPhone. The site claims that the earphones were manufactured in Foxconn's Vietnamese factory — the cable even includes the company's iconic signature, "Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in Vietnam" — and are convinced of their authenticity because of the superior build quality. The new earphones are said to be smaller and, when they are worn, do not hurt the ear. It should be noted that the headphones do not feature an in-line remote, however, so it is unlikely that they would ship with Apple's

Pirate Bay co-founder arrested in CambodiaThis is probably not how Pirate Bay co-founder Gottfrid Svartholm pictured his holiday in Cambodia ending. The Wall Street Journal reports that Cambodian police arrested Svartholm on Sunday for the alleged "illegal use of information technology" in a joint operation with Swedish law enforcement officials. The Journal says that Svartholm could now be sent back to his native Sweden, where he faces a one-year jail sentence for violating copyright law. While Svartholm would probably rather not go to jail, his one-year sentence still beats old-school pirate punishments such as keelhauling and walking the plank. Read
