SkyDrive for Android is a basic cloud tool with many rivals

Posted: 04 Sep 2012 02:58 PM PDT

Microsoft's SkyDrive is a surprisingly obscure service compared to other cloud tools considering the corporate name behind it. But all the pre-Windows 8 buzz has really focused Microsoft's strategy around the cloud, warranting a SkyDrive update and mobile roll out. SkyDrive for Android was released several months after the iOS version, and it also faces plenty of competition in the consumer cloud space. So the first question to ask is, does this latecomer offer anything different for Android users?

Oracle's emergency Java patch opens the door to more vulnerabilitiesAfter an exploit in the latest Java 7 framework was discovered, Oracle (ORCL) responded with an emergency patch to fix the problem. The company's quickness, however, may have opened the door to more vulnerabilities in the Java software. While the patch fixed the original exploit, it introduced a new vulnerability that allows an attacker to bypass the Java Virtual Machine sandbox. Researchers at Security Explorations discovered the exploit and have sent a proof of concept to Oracle, and they are currently waiting to hear back. The research firm has not released the code to the public, although it plans to write a technical paper on the issue once it has been patched. New Yahoo CEO pours over every resume to prevent hiring of C-list slackers

New Yahoo CEO pours over every resume to prevent hiring of C-list slackersIt should be pretty obvious by now that new Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Marissa Mayer is not messing around. An unnamed source has told Business Insider that Mayer has now taken control of the company's hiring process and personally reads the resumes of every "serious candidate" to weed out anyone who doesn't meet her exacting standards.  Business Insider's source says that this has slowed new hires down to a crawl and has even cost the company good talent as a result, but overall he's sympathetic to her efforts since the company has been content to hire "'C-players' who were not 'fired up to come to work' and were 'tolerated too long.' " The result of all this, the source said, was that "nobody gave a shit

According to Business Insider, Maher has heard directly from "people close to the situation in Kansas City" who say that "Google has made it clear more cities will likely be bidding for Fiber soon." If Google does decide to build out fiber in other major cities, it will certainly create waves of panic among cable providers, which likely won't be able to offer any service that's close to matching Google's

And after five years of badging every one of its Intel Atom-powered PCs with the Eee moniker, ASUS (2357) is calling it quits on the netbook category that it pioneered. Digitimes reports that ASUS has ceased production of all Eee PC netbooks and will transition to marketing its family of Transformer tablets to fill the 10.1-inch netbook void. The writing has long been on the wall for the netbook's death. With thin, light and powerful Ultrabooks and tablets capable of processing high-definition games and videos without any slowdown, there just isn't a need for netbooks anymore. AT&T announces Pantech Flex with standard and 'easy' Android modes [video]You know smartphones have become too complicated when phone makers have to include an "Easy Experience" mode to simplify Android. The Pantech Flex is touted as the first smartphone to let users choose between traditional Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a toned down Android layout. "Easy Experience" mode eschews Android's seemingly endless home screens full of apps in favor of a single screen with large and prominent shortcut buttons that contain only the user's favorite apps. Despite its relatively low price — $49.99 with two-year contract — the Flex has decent enough specs to compete in the low-end handset market: 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display with 960 x 540 resolution, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8GB microSD (expandable to 32GB) and 8-megapixel
