Little respect for conventions in never-ending U.S. campaign

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 02:17 PM PDT

COMMERCE, Michigan (Reuters) - There are few timeouts in U.S. presidential campaigns any more. A tradition of candidates keeping a low profile while opponents bask in the limelight at their party conventions has frayed in recent elections. This year, that custom will be all but ignored as President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney compete to be heard amid the cacophony of campaign noise on Twitter, YouTube and the 24-hour news cycle. ...

A paint-by-numbers portrait of changing nation

FILe - In this Feb. 16, 2012, file photo, Assemblyman Reed Gusciora D-Trenton, left, and Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman D-Mercer, congratulate each other as the bill sponsored by Rep. Gusciora legalizing same-sex marriages, passes and is the final Legislative approval for Marriage Equality at the State House in Trenton, N.J. The 42-33 vote sends the bill to Gov. Chris Christie. The Republican governor who opposes gay marriage had promised "very swift action" if the bill reached his desk. Christie and most Republican lawmakers want gay marriage put to a popular vote. Democrats say gay marriage is a civil right protected by the Constitution and should not be subject to referendum. The country that President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are vying to lead for the next four years is not quite the same as the one four years ago, not nearly the same as the one further back in time. On May 17, 2004, dozens of same-sex couples in Massachusetts took vows to become We're heavier in pounds and hotter by degrees than Americans of old. We're starting to snub our noses at distant suburbs after generations of burbs in our blood. Our roads and bridges are kind of a mess. There are many more poor, and that's almost sure to get worse.

Akin Senate bid tests GOP strength in Missouri

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 01:23 PM PDT

This photo combo shows U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., left, and Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo. For most of a century, Missouri has been the nation's bellwether. Every four years, a majority of voters in the state in the center of the country _ a near perfect mirror of its demographics, geography, economics and politics _ predictably cast their ballots for the candidates the nation as a whole chooses to win the White House. Should Akin, who offended millions of Americans with insensitive remarks about rape and pregnancy, rebound this November to defeat McCaskill, Missouri will probably need to turn in its bell for good. (AP Photo/Sid Hastings, Manuel Balce Ceneta)A "bellwether," quite literally, is a male sheep wearing a bell that leads the flock — or at least allows a farmer to find his sheep, because the clanging ram is never too far from the rest of the group.
