In response to reports that it was seeking a board seat at Sharp Display's parent company, Foxconn reportedly said that "the company's focus in cooperating with Sharp is to help complement each's weakness to allow each side to achieve maximum benefits." The company did say "a board seat is not really the main focus of Foxconn," however, adding that it's "hoping to have more substantial influence to help Sharp improve its management and sales |

Yahoo’s $100M woman sends first memo to troops Posted: 20 Jul 2012 03:35 PM PDT A recent filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission reveals that newly appointed Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Marissa Mayer will potentially earn $100 million over the next five years. The sum is undoubtedly huge, but the tasks that lie ahead for Yahoo's new chief are daunting at best. Now that Mayer has taken the reins, the world — or, perhaps more accurately, Yahoo employees and investors — waits with bated breath to see what sweeping changes might come under Mayer's rule. The answer, for the time being, is none. "Please do not stop. You are doing important work. Please don't stop," Mayer told Yahoos in a memo obtained by All Things D. Samsung set to take the first step toward flexible smartphones this year Posted: 20 Jul 2012 03:00 PM PDT According to a report from Korean language news site DDaily, Samsung (005930KS) will begin producing flexible AMOLED displays this quarter. The panels are said to be less than half as thick as current-generation panels, measuring just 0.6 millimeters compared to 1.8 millimeters. The publication notes, however, that the initial displays will be protected by inflexible glass rather than a flexible plastic layer needed for use in a flexible device. Samsung is reportedly planning to release a device with an ultra-thin flexible AMOLED display by the end of the year, and is looking to begin mass production of truly flexible displays by 2014. Nexus 7 Selling Out, Dousing Kindle Fire Posted: 20 Jul 2012 02:45 PM PDT Google recently unveiled its Nexus 7 tablet, a device made in partnership with Asus which closely resembles Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet. The biggest difference? Instead of a slow, customized version of Android 2.3 "Gingerbread," it runs the perky new Android 4.1 "Jelly Bean." And instead of being tied in to Amazon's "Appstore" and services like Cloud Drive, it uses the Google Play store and Google's proprietary (not open-source like the rest of Android) apps. |

Judge denies Samsung’s appeal, Galaxy Tab ban stands Posted: 20 Jul 2012 02:25 PM PDT A United States Court of Appeals on Friday denied Samsung's (005930KS) second attempt to stop its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet from being banned, The Register reported. The court upheld District Judge Lucy Koh's injunction against the device, which was found to be infringing on Apple (AAPL) IP. Along with its decision to not stay the injunction on the Galaxy Tab, the court also refused the South Korean company's request to speed up the appeal process. "Samsung may of course significantly self-expedite the case by filing its own brief early. Samsung, however, has not shown that the time for Apple to file its brief should be shortened," the court said in its ruling. The only way for Samsung to get the ban lifted is |

Is the Tech IPO Back, or Just Back for Some? Posted: 20 Jul 2012 01:40 PM PDT Both Kayak.com, an online travel booking site, and Palo Alto Networks, a network security company, made their market debuts this morning, the first tech IPOs since Facebook's abysmal debut. Their performances don't look anything like Facebook's. That may be a good thing for these companies, but not necessarily for the social media bubble. Kayak had an initial 28.2 percent pop, with the stock trading up $7.32 from its initial $26 offer price. Palo Alto is also trading up about 30 percent from its debut, giving it a pop, too. ... |
