"This is the first time homes are at an affordable point," said the freelance writer, 35. She hopes to move her two young daughters out of their rented New York City apartment soon, taking advantage of record low mortgage rates and signs the slump is over. Wounded war veterans find brotherhood in softball Posted: 27 May 2012 09:06 PM PDT COOPERSTOWN, New York (Reuters) - When Saul Bosquez, a 27-year-old U.S. Army veteran who lost part of his left leg in Iraq, stepped up to the plate during a softball game this Memorial Day weekend, he knew he needed a big hit. Bosquez, who plays with the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team and wears a prosthetic leg below his left knee, said the hot weather on Sunday in Cooperstown - home to the Baseball Hall of Fame - was making it harder than usual for him to run the bases. Luckily, the ball soared over the outfielders' heads, and Bosquez made it safely to third. ... |

"He was ripping into his face with his teeth," Larry Vega said of the attacker. "He was ripping his skin, his neck. He had him held down. Fallout from Dewey collapse hits clients Posted: 28 May 2012 11:40 AM PDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - For eight years, hundreds of victims of militant attacks in Israel have pursued litigation against a Jordanian bank they claim provided financial services to Hamas and other militant groups. Now the plaintiffs have a new legal hurdle to overcome: the collapse of law firm Dewey & LeBoeuf. A group of lawyers from the New York-based law firm represent Arab Bank Group, the defendant in the suit. Now, with Dewey on the verge of shuttering and those lawyers scattering, U.S. ... |
Manhunt launched for two murder suspects in Arkansas jail break Posted: 28 May 2012 01:35 PM PDT (Reuters) - Authorities in southwestern Arkansas have launched a manhunt for two murder suspects who escaped from jail before dawn on Monday by cutting through the window bars of their second-story cell with a hacksaw, sheriff's officials said. After removing the bars and smashing through a pane of glass, the two men then shoved mattresses through the window and climbed out of the Miller County Sheriff's Detention Center in Texarkana, Arkansas, spokeswoman Vanessa Schaeffer said. "They pushed through mattresses to soften their drop to the ground," Schaeffer said. ... |
Obama calls treatment of Vietnam War veterans "a disgrace" Posted: 28 May 2012 03:18 PM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama called the treatment decades ago of returning Vietnam War veterans a "national shame" on Monday and promised as commander-in-chief not to send U.S. troops back into harm's way without a clear mission and strategy. Obama did not mention rising tensions with Iran and Syria or other potential threats in his remarks to veterans and military families on a hot, sunny Memorial Day, focusing instead on the legacy of Vietnam and his own efforts to wind down the Iraq and Afghanistan wars started by his predecessor, George W. Bush. ... |
