Eastern Europeans fuel fight for Internet freedoms (AP) Posted: 18 Feb 2012 03:48 AM PST AP - Eastern Europe's tradition of political revolt has met the digital age. This time it's not communists or food shortages fueling fury, but an international copyright treaty that opponents say threatens freedom on the Internet.

HOW TO: Follow London Fashion Week Via iPhone, Social Media and Web (Mashable) Posted: 17 Feb 2012 03:54 PM PST Mashable - London Fashion Week kicked off Friday -- and fortunately for those of us outside the ropes at Somerset House, brands and media are making the week more accessible than ever before. Forty-six fashion shows will stream the unveiling of their Autumn/Winter 2012 collections live from London this season, up from 32 in September. (See the full schedule, below.) High street retailer Topshop will also be live-streaming several shows via its iPhone app, including those from Mary Katrantzou, Peter Pilotto, Meadham Kirchhoff, Louise Gray, Michael Van Der Ham and Topshop Unique. Still more brands and press will be uploading front row and backstage footage via their Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram -- and now, Pinterest -- accounts.
| 8-Inch iPad Mini is Apple's Attempt at Putting Out the Fire (ContributorNetwork) Posted: 18 Feb 2012 04:36 PM PST ContributorNetwork - COMMENTARY | The Kindle Fire is being viewed as a tremendous success for Amazon. AFP is reporting that Amazon shipped 3.9 million Kindle Fires in the fourth quarter, good enough for a second place slice of market share to the Apple iPad. The report mentions Apple shipped 15.4 million iPads in the same time period. While the numbers seem to be worlds apart, these are two companies headed for a tablet showdown in the immediate future if the rumors are true. |
Motorola Droid 4 released; Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 announced (Appolicious) Posted: 18 Feb 2012 08:00 AM PST Appolicious - Motorola may have hit a rough patch, but it's emerging with new devices and possibly the guidance of its new parent company, Google. The Droid 4 is one of Motorola's latest devices to hit the market, wowing with its medium size, full QWERTY keyboard, 4G support and stellar battery life. But while Motorola's playing catchup, Samsung forges ahead with plans to release a Galaxy Tab 2, ready with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. HTC's ramping up its ICS efforts as well, with plans for an early access preview of Android 4.0 on its Sensation line of smartphones.
Microsoft working on new Spotify-like service on Xbox, Windows and smartphones (Digital Trends) Posted: 18 Feb 2012 12:26 PM PST Digital Trends - As reported this week by CNET, Microsoft is apparently chatting with several record labels regarding the development of a music application that would be more similar to Pandora, Spotify, Rdio, MOG and other streaming music, subscription services than the Zune Music Pass. Conceptually, Microsoft would brand this service with the Xbox Live name rather than the failed Zune brand name and launch the application on the Xbox 360, Windows smartphones and the upcoming revision of the Windows operating system. According to CNETâs sources, specifics regarding how the service would deliver music to consumers in addition to how much the music industry would get paid from any potential subscription fees havenât been finalized.

Will the confirmed iPad 3 Retina display make way for the new Apple iTV? (Digital Trends) Posted: 18 Feb 2012 12:06 PM PST Digital Trends - According to a recent post at MacRumors, members of the Apple rumor blog obtained the iPad 3 screen as a separate manufacturing part and examined the display underneath a microscope. Identical in size to the 9.7-inch iPad 1 and iPad 2 displays, MacRumors found that the display pixels are one quarter the size of the pixels on the iPad 2. For instance, a cluster of  eight pixels on the iPad 2 would contain 32 pixels on the iPad 3 in the same measured area. Starting with the iPad 2 native resolution of 1024 by 768 and multiplying the total pixels by a factor of four, the next display for the upcoming iPad will have a 2048 by 1536 resolution and offer double the sharpness of the first two iPads.
Court upholds lawsuit against Bay area Hooters (AP) Posted: 18 Feb 2012 02:44 PM PST AP - A state appeals court has upheld a class-action lawsuit filed by servers at several San Francisco Bay area Hooters restaurants.
