Rick Santorum likewise hailed the memory of a grandfather who worked in the auto factories and an era when hard work sustained families. It's a risky road, Politico pointed out, one that fueled Democratic ridicule of Bob Dole in 1996 for allegedly offering voters a bridge to the past.
